Frankfurt's first move was direct.
Lord knocked it back to Zavilas and imdiately sprinted toward Schalke's defensive line - not a run for the ball yet, just movent, probing whether the centre-backs would follow or hold. tzelder tracked him. Höwedes held. Correct response, both of them.
Zavilas received and looked left. Kittel had already pulled inside from his starting position, creating an angle between Schalke's defensive midfielder and the right-back. He received Zavilas's pass in the half-space, the sa half-space Mateo had been using all week in training and drove forward.
Mateo stepped across to press.
Kittel had a good first touch and better balance. He waited - one beat, two until Mateo had committed his weight forward, then nudged the ball right with his outside boot and turned past him with a single smooth motion.
It was a clean beat. Kittel hadn't done anything spectacular. He'd simply waited for the press and moved past it.
Mateo turned and chased. Annan was already tracking across from the left wing, cutting off the forward option. Kittel checked back, found Halil Altıntop out wide, and the attack moved to the flank.
"That's the Bundesliga," Mateo thought, and kept running.
Halil Altıntop was quick. Pliatsikas tracked him tightly down the right - closing the inside channel, forcing him to the line. They ran together along the touchline, neither conceding, the kind of duel that would recur throughout the match.
Eventually Altıntop turned inside. The ball found Zavilas again in the centre. He played it over the top with the easy weight of soone who had been watching Schalke's defensive line since the kickoff and had identified the mont.
Lord had started his run before the pass was played.
tzelder turned. Lord was behind him - not far, but far enough. The ball was dropping.
Lord didn't wait for it to settle. He swung his right foot through it on the half-volley, angling for the far corner.
Neuer had already moved - body weight shifting before the contact, reading the direction from Lord's plant foot. He dived right, stretched his arm, and got fingertips to it.
The ball deflected wide of the post.
Fweet—!
Corner to Frankfurt.
The Comrzbank-Arena acknowledged it, fifty thousand people recognising a good save, the frustration of the chance not converting. Kittel jogged to the corner flag.
Tom Warrick, in the booth: "Neuer - outstanding. He'd read the direction before Lord had finished the swing. The save was technically correct and physically difficult." A pause. "But Schalke's defensive shape was exposed for a mont. Lord lost tzelder - not by much, but enough. That'll be a pattern."
On the pitch, Mateo had tracked back and was now standing near the edge of his own box, watching the corner being prepared.
He thought about what had just happened. Not defensively - he'd been beaten cleanly and chased correctly, that was all that was available to him. What he was processing was the speed. The ti between Zavilas receiving and Lord making his run had been less than two seconds. In the Third Division and the cup match against Hannover, there had been half a second more, sotis a full second, in the gaps between pressure arriving. Here the gaps existed and then didn't exist, and the gap between those two states was smaller than he'd practiced for.
He wouldn't be beaten the sa way twice. He adjusted his starting position - two tres deeper than he'd been, giving himself a fraction more ti on reception. It made him slightly less available for short passes from the defensive unit, but it made him harder to press from behind.
The corner ca in. Neuer claid it - both hands, secure catch, the goalkeeper's authority clear. He distributed quickly.
The ball reached Per Kluge. Per Kluge looked for Mateo.
Mateo was there.
He received on the half-turn, Per Kluge's pass arriving at an angle that required a touch to control and redirect. He took it - left foot, inside of the boot, taking the pace off and setting it for his right and looked up.
The overlay spread across the pitch. Amber on both wings. Amber through the centre toward Huntelaar. Yellow in the channel where Schwegler's positioning cut the direct pass.
Then Raúl moved.
He stepped right, away from Russ, creating two tres of space in the left channel. The red line appeared - through the gap behind Schwegler's position, into that channel, requiring weight and angle to reach Raúl before he was tracked.
Frankfurt's right winger Yekas pressed imdiately from Mateo's right.
He played it with the outside of his left foot - the ball curling slightly as it left his boot, angled to miss Schwegler's covering run by half a tre, dropping into the space where Raúl had moved.
Raúl received it in stride. Russ had reacted and was close. Raúl turned - one move, his body using Russ's closing run against him, spinning off the contact and drove into the box.
He shot. Fährmann down to his right, palming it away.
Corner to Schalke.
Tom, asured: "A good exchange. Silva received under pressure and played it in the one touch before Yekas arrived. The delivery found Raúl in movent, where he was going. Fährmann's save was good too, but Raúl made him work."
[He's playing the sa way he did in the cup - before the runner has finished their run.]
[The defensive bypass is already showing though. Kittel walked through him in the first minute.]
[Weak defence, soone said. It shows. But the forward passing more than compensates so far.]
The corner ca to nothing - tzelder's header clearing comfortably. Frankfurt regained possession and moved it wide again.
Mateo tracked back into his deeper position.
The match had been running for few minutes. He'd been beaten once on defence and created one genuine chance going forward. That was the information the first few minutes had given him.
Faster than the cup. Tighter spaces. Less room to hold the ball. But the red lines were appearing, and when they appeared they were correct, and Raúl was moving to the right positions with a sharpness that went beyond what the defender had prepared for.
The Partner Card was working.
Mateo tracked back and waited for the next phase.
Tom Warrick set his pen down for a mont.
"He's adjusted his starting position since being beaten by Kittel in the first minute. Dropped two tres deeper - giving himself more ti on receipt.
