The witness line reached Ty through a shelf full of burned phones.

Instead of opening like a portal, it crawled through speakers, cracked screens, receipt printers, body caras, and one ancient tape recorder that had no reason to work. Every object in the archive clicked on at a slightly different ti until the room filled with Jade's cafeteria from a dozen cheap angles.

Ty saw the shelter.

He saw Waddell holding the nu.

He saw Kieran standing beside Jade.

He saw Jade with one hand over her right eye, watching his mouth like she had to read him from bone.

Her sound never reached him.

That mattered more than he wanted it to.

JJ stepped closer. "Ty, she's not reacting right."

"I see."

"Can she hear you?"

"No."

The word scraped.

He hated the scrape. He hated that a stolen face could speak smoothly while his truth had to fight its way through bone and fire.

Heissman adjusted the dead tape recorder. "The cafeteria feed is stabilizing through witness objects. I recomnd direct answers, minimal taphysics, and no emotionally indulgent declarations unless you want the route to package you as a tragic mascot."

Ty looked at him.

Heissman cleared his throat. "Answer plainly."

"I was going to."

"Splendid. My redundancy has achieved moral support."

On the shelter screen, Waddell lifted the nu higher.

IF TESSA HAS EVIDENCE IN ONE HAND AND A WOUNDED STRANGER IN FRONT OF HER, WHAT DOES SHE SAVE FIRST?

Ty read it once.

The route shivered.

The archive shelves leaned toward him. Boxes opened a finger-width. Cards slid from drawers with prepared answers printed in clean black type.

SAVE THE EVIDENCE. TRUTH SAVES MORE PEOPLE LATER.

SECURE THE PROOF. EMOTION IS HOW LIARS WIN.

THE WOUNDED STRANGER MAY BE BAIT.

Ty burned them without touching them.

"The stranger."

The tape recorder repeated him half a second later, then the phones, then the body caras.

The shelter captions caught up.

TY: THE STRANGER.

Ty kept his eyes on Jade.

"Evidence can wait. Dead people cannot help win."

JJ's breath hitched behind him.

Yun-Jin's blade lowered by an inch.

Omina watched the shelves instead of the screen. "Route pressure is dropping."

The archive lights flickered from red to white to red again.

Zunoder's voice ca from the far end of the room.

"Noble."

Ty turned.

The man with his face stood between two shelves, rain drying on stolen shoulders. He looked less polished now. The reflection fra had wounded him in a way blades had not. The face still held, but the skin around the left eye pulled too tight when he smiled.

"You chose the answer everyone wanted," Zunoder said.

Ty raised one burning hand. "No."

"No?"

"Everyone wanted proof. Tessa chose Nora."

Zunoder's smile thinned.

The witness objects echoed the nas through the room.

TESSA.

NORA.

The route disliked nas when it did not own them.

A drawer burst open near Ty's knee. Inside sat a grocery register drawer with blood dried along the edge of the cash tray. Coins stuck to it. A receipt lay across the twenties.

Nora's receipt.

Ti stamp. Store number. Cara angle. A small ugly fact with nowhere pretty to go.

Heissman made a low sound. "Beautifully inconvenient."

JJ looked sick. "That's her blood."

"And his choice," Yun-Jin said.

Ty picked up the receipt.

The route tried to make it heavy.

For a mont, the paper weighed more than a sword. More than a body. More than a face. It carried the old man's thanks, the cashier's wound, Tessa's shaking hand, Jade's lost hearing, and every person who had wanted the rescue to stay simple because simple lies were easier to share.

Ty held it anyway.

Zunoder stepped closer.

"Give that to and I will stop using Tessa."

JJ snapped, "Wow. Very generous from the parasite wearing his skin."

Zunoder looked at her with Ty's eyes. "You should be careful. Your na is still close to my hand."

JJ went pale.

Ty moved before the fear could settle.

He put himself between Zunoder and JJ.

The archive shelves slamd inward, trying to narrow the aisle around them. Omina lifted her cuffed wrists and spoke in a voice that made the hold tir flare.

"Forr Command Authority acknowledges ongoing witness interference and records threat against beneficiary."

The shelves stopped an inch from Ty's shoulder.

Heissman pointed the clipboard at Zunoder. "For a creature so obsessed with symbolic legitimacy, you are accumulating an admirably stupid paper trail."

Zunoder's gaze stayed on Ty.

"You think a receipt makes you real?"

Ty looked at the shelter screens.

Jade watched him without hearing.

Tessa sat with her bandaged hand lifted to her mouth.

Nora's dic typed sothing from beside the stretcher.

HE SAVED BY TELLING HER TO LEAVE THE PROOF.

The words crossed every active screen in the archive.

Ty felt the missing finger pulse in his fist.

A prompt opened in the air, small enough that it did not steal the scene.

BONE HALF IDENTITY THRESHOLD

PUBLIC WITNESS RECORD: PARTIAL

CONDITION IDENTIFIED: WITNESSED ACTION OUTWEIGHS BORROWED FACE WHEN NAD HARM IS CONFIRD.

AVAILABLE EFFECT: MARK ONE TRUE ANSWER TO CURRENT CLAIM CHAIN.

Ty read it.

He disliked every word except available.

"What is it?" JJ asked.

"One mark."

"On him?"

Ty looked at Zunoder.

The easy answer stood right there wearing his face.

Then Ty looked at the receipt.

"On the record."

He pressed his burning thumb to Nora's receipt.

Blue fire did not consu it.

It sank into the paper and left a skeletal print over the ti stamp.

The witness line roared through connection rather than sound. Screens across the archive, cafeteria, street feeds, hospital phones, and city ergency terminals all showed the sa receipt for three clean seconds.

NORA PELL.

GROCERY INCIDENT.

SEEN ALIVE BEFORE FACE USER RESCUE.

FACE USER STEPPED OVER WITNESS.

BONE HALF RECORD: CONFIRD BY ACTION.

The route tried to edit the language.

It failed on the na.

Nora Pell stayed.

In the shelter, Jade gripped the table with both hands. She still heard nothing, but she saw the words and smiled like it hurt too much to waste.

Zunoder lunged.

He crossed half the aisle in a blur of stolen muscle and blue fla. Ty t him shoulder first. Bone hit flesh. The impact drove both of them into a shelf and sent evidence boxes crashing around their feet.

Ty's skull hovered inches from his own stolen mouth.

Zunoder whispered, "You are teaching them to love the bones."

Ty drove a knee into his ribs.

"I am teaching them to doubt you."

Zunoder laughed, but the sound broke when JJ grabbed a fallen evidence tag and slapped it against his arm.

The tag stuck.

WITNESS INTERFERENCE.

Yun-Jin cut the air between Zunoder and the shelf before he could reach JJ. Omina's hold tir flared again, burning another minute away. Heissman, with the worst survival instincts in the room, shoved the bloodied register drawer with his foot until it slid behind Ty.

"Preserve the grotesque little artifact," he said. "I am developing affection for it."

Zunoder tore the evidence tag from his arm.

Skin ca with it.

The stolen face flickered.

The witness objects caught it. Not a clean fra this ti. A sar. A tear in the lie. Enough for every watching person to understand the face had to be maintained.

Zunoder looked toward the screens and made a choice.

He stopped fighting Ty.

He smiled at Jade instead.

She could not hear him, but the captions printed his words.

ZUNODER: YOU FOUND A RULE.

ZUNODER: RULES HAVE DOORS.

The archive floor split under his feet.

A printer at the end of the aisle scread to life.

Paper shot from it in a long strip, folding over itself. Ty grabbed for Zunoder, but the red route opened between them, not wide enough for Ty to cross, just wide enough to take the stolen body one step backward.

Zunoder lifted one hand.

Between his fingers was a white hospital tag.

Ty knew it before the cara focused.

HAMBERTON, TYRONE

INTAKE STATUS: DECEASED

RCY GENERAL - BASENT RECORDS

DATE OF FIRST DEATH FILED

JJ whispered, "Ty..."

The route swallowed Zunoder to the ankles.

He looked at Ty with Ty's face, damaged now, still dangerous.

"You want public proof? Co to the first place Earth wrote you down as dead."

Ty moved.

Too late.

The route closed.

The witness line held the receipt. Nora's na stayed public. Tessa stayed alive. Jade had her rule. Earth had seen the skeleton answer on record.

Ty stood in the archive with blue fire shaking in his hand and the printer still spitting directions to rcy General.

Heissman read the first page.

"Basent records. Naturally. Nothing good in any universe has ever begun in basent records."

Ty took the paper.

"We go there."

JJ looked at the hospital tag still frozen on one of the screens.

"That's where you died?"

Ty stared at the na Earth had given his corpse.

"That is where Earth stopped asking."

He closed his fist around the directions without burning them.

"We ask now."
