Chapter 358: The Four Winds

In Mondstadt, there exists the legend of the Four Winds.

The Lion of the South drove out the nobles.

The Falcon of the West laid the foundations of the Knights.

The Wolf of the North wandered before finally settling in Wolvendom.

And the Dragon of the East... delivers packages—mission must be accompl—

Wait. That last one seems a bit out of place.

In the ancient stories, the Dragon of the East was actually the dragon that had just flown away—Dvalin.

The Lion of the South, the Wolf of the North, the Falcon of the West, and the Dragon of the East.

With the circulation of the Four Winds, Mondstadt grew into the prosperous and free land it is today.

Dvalin was originally a powerful yet innocent elental creature. After eting Barbatos, it gradually learned the language of humans and began protecting Mondstadt.

A thousand years ago, after the old aristocracy was driven out, Dvalin answered Barbatos’s call. With Barbatos playing the lyre and singing, Dvalin blew away the ice and snow, flattened mountain peaks, and reshaped Mondstadt’s terrain so that the warm, moist sea winds from the east could blow into the region and support agriculture.

It could be said that Mondstadt’s current prosperity would not exist without its contribution.

Five hundred years ago, disaster struck.

The poisonous dragon Durin attacked Mondstadt.

At that ti, the Lion of the South had no successor, and the Falcon of the West had very few capable mbers left.

Responding to the prayers of Mondstadt’s people, Barbatos summoned Dvalin with his own will.

Dvalin crushed Durin’s throat with its fangs and slew it at Dragonspine.

However, in doing so, Dvalin also swallowed Durin’s poisonous blood and has been tornted by it ever since.

The catastrophe five hundred years ago created countless tragedies.

Dvalin’s part in that disaster was reduced in historical records to rely a single sentence.

As ti passed, people continued to praise the glory of the Four Winds, but they had long forgotten what those guardians actually looked like.

The reason Jean recognized Dvalin at a glance was because, as a descendant of the Gunnhildr clan, she had studied the related records during her strict upbringing.

But...

Why would the Dragon of the East —Mondstadt’s own guardian—attack Mondstadt twice?

The evening breeze brushed gently across the city. Outside the walls, trees swayed softly in the wind. No longer violent, the wind lifted Jean’s hair and eased the faint anxiety between her brows.

Because soone she trusted had arrived.

"I’ve already arranged for people to repair the damaged buildings."

On the city wall beneath the sunset, the claw marks left by the dragon looked particularly shocking.

Diluc crouched down and ran his hand across the marks left by the dragon, a thoughtful expression appearing on his face.

Because he had sensed a deep, nauseating aura within them.

"Thank you for your help."

Dvalin’s appearance today had caused the most severe damage to Mondstadt since the arrival of the Fatui.

With the Knights of Favonius in their current state, they simply did not have enough manpower to deal with such incidents.

"Don’t misunderstand. I’m not helping the Knights, I’m helping Mondstadt’s residents."

Glancing at Jean, Diluc spoke bluntly.

He still held grievances toward the Knights.

"I understand. That’s why I’m thanking you as your junior, not as the Acting Grand Master."

After spending so much ti around Diluc, Jean had co to understand his personality fairly well.

So she showed a faint, slightly mischievous smile as she replied.

"..."

For the strict Jean to say sothing like that—it seed that during her ti as Acting Grand Master, she had grown quite a lot.

Putting that thought aside, Diluc’s Vision flashed with light. He skillfully manipulated Pyro energy, gathering the scattered elental forces lingering in the air.

Besides the wind that symbolized freedom, there was another energy being surrounded by the flas—an extrely deep and pitch-black power.

"What is this...?"

Jean frowned slightly as she looked at the strange energy.

It gave her an extrely unpleasant feeling. Simply staring at it made her feel as if her gaze was being swallowed by it.

"It seems our old friend is involved again."

The scorching flas completely devoured the Abyssal aura. Diluc stood up and looked toward the direction of Old Mondstadt.

He was almost certain that this dragon attack on Mondstadt had sothing to do with the Abyss.

If Bai Luo were here, he would probably show a rather complicated expression.

Good grief... he’s finally not blaming everything on .

In fact, Diluc had the Abyss Mage’s leaked Abyssal energy to thank for that. Otherwise... there was a high chance Diluc would have suspected Bai Luo again.

However, Diluc did not inform Jean about the Abyss. Mondstadt had just suffered a wind disaster, and there were countless matters that required her attention.

As for the Abyss, he had fought against them for a long ti already. Calling them "old friends" would not be an exaggeration.

Since that was the case, he might as well be the one to "receive" this old friend.

Jean suspected that Diluc was hiding sothing from her, but considering that this man had concealed more than one or two matters from her in the past, she ultimately chose not to ask.

"The people who recognized the identity of the Stormterror weren’t just you and . Our priority now is to calm them down. We absolutely cannot let them reveal that the Stormterror is Dvalin."

Turning around and looking at the devastated Mondstadt, Jean spoke.

If this had happened earlier, spreading Dvalin’s identity wouldn’t have mattered much.

But now, after Dvalin had caused such massive destruction in Mondstadt, if people learned that the dragon was actually one of the Four Winds, the situation might spiral out of control.

After all, the Knights of Favonius themselves represented one of the Four Winds—the Falcon of the West.

If the citizens were to completely lose faith in the Four Winds because of the Dragon of the East, it would beco an unprecedented disaster.

Moreover, Jean simply could not understand why Dvalin would betray Mondstadt.

A dragon that once fought the poisonous dragon to the death for Mondstadt—how could it possibly commit such brutal acts?

There had to be so reason behind it.

"Don’t worry. Kaeya has already gone to deal with it."

As one of the few strategic minds in the Knights of Favonius, Kaeya could naturally think of the sa things that Jean and Diluc did.

So before Jean could even formally issue the order, he had already drawn up a list and taken his trusted subordinates to visit each person on it—one household at a ti—to "check their water ters."

You might ask how he knew all this.

Well, he hadn’t been exaggerating earlier.

Before eting Bai Luo, Kaeya really had been a veteran of the tavern scene. Through that lifestyle, he had gathered quite a bit of information about various people.

Naturally, that included those who had previously ntioned Dvalin.

The afterglow of the sunset slowly sank behind the western mountains, yet Mondstadt did not fall into sleep like it usually did.

"Go get so rest. Kaeya is on duty tonight, you can trust him."

Retracting his gaze, Diluc spoke.

"And you?"

"? I have sothing more important to take care of."

His eyes turned toward the direction of the Goth Grand Hotel.

Diluc leapt down from the battered city wall and disappeared into the streets of Mondstadt.
