Raizen raised his hand.

Stretched it forward. Palm open. Fingers spread.

And he felt sothing reach back.

Instantly, he jerked his hand back, eyes wide.

Kenzo let out a laugh "hah, what’s wrong?"

Raizen didn’t really know what to answer. "I... I felt so reaching back"

Atman made a pleased face. "Oh! Then it must like you"

Raizen stretched his hand forward again, more hesitantly.

Palm open. Fingers spread. The morning air cool against his skin, the mist hanging between the trunks, the pale shafts of sunlight landing on the wet wood around him.

He reached, trying to get to that place again.

Nothing happened.

He pushed - not physically, not with his arm, but with sothing behind it. The sa instinct Kenzo had described. The reaching-without-reaching. The part of himself that existed before words, before thought, before any decision he’d ever consciously made.

And sothing pushed back again.

It wasn’t a wall. Walls were solid, definite. This was different. It was resistance - elastic, thick, like pressing his hand into sothing that gave in the tiniest bit but refused to let go. He felt it in his mind first - a pressure behind his forehead, not quite a headache, not quite a sound, but occupying the sa space as both. Then in his hand. The Eon didn’t want to form, like he saw the other tars. His fingers tingled, then ached, then went strangely numb, as if the air in front of his palm had thickened into sothing semi-solid and was quietly rejecting him.

He pushed harder.

The resistance bent. Slightly. Like a rubber band stretched slowly toward its limit - taut, vibrating with the tension of sothing that wanted very badly to snap back into shape. But it didn’t break. It just held. Held and held and held, no matter how hard Raizen pushed, no matter how far he reached.

Raizen gritted his teeth. Adjusted. Tried coming at it differently - not force, but finesse. He let the pressure soften, tried to slip underneath it, around it. Find a gap. A weak point.

Nothing. The resistance shifted with him. Wherever he went, it was already there.

He dropped his hand. Breathed heavily for a few seconds, then wiped sweat from his forehead with the back of his wrist.

Behind him, silence. Saffi hadn’t moved. Atman hadn’t moved. Kenzo stood with his arms folded, watching. Not worried. Not impatient. Just watching.

Raizen raised his hand again.

This ti he went harder. Threw himself at it - not just the reaching, but everything. Every ounce of focus he had. His jaw clenched. His shoulders tightened. The tendons in his forearm stood out as his fingers spread wide and he pushed into that invisible, elastic sothing with everything he had.

The feeling like a rubber band stretched further. He could feel it bending - feel the point where it would have to give in or throw him back. His head throbbed. The pressure behind his eyes built and built, and his breathing went shallow without him noticing.

Still nothing.

He dropped his hand again. Bent forward. Put his hands on his knees. Sweat ran down his temple and dripped onto the platform.

He tried again. Steadier this ti - no burst, no surge. Just constant, even pressure, held for as long as he could hold it. The resistance pushed back with exactly the sa force. A perfect stalemate. He held it for thirty seconds. A minute. His arm started trembling. The pressure in his head beca a dull, spreading ache that sat behind both eyes and wouldn’t move.

Nothing. Again.

He bent his hand, shook it for a few seconds, then flexed his fingers. They were stiff - the kind of stiff that ca from holding a position too long under too much tension.

He tried sothing else. Instead of pushing, he pulled - drew the Eon inward, toward his chest, trying to create a vacuum that the resistance would rush to fill. The rubber band didn’t care. It held its shape regardless of which direction he approached from, like it existed in every dinsion at once.

He tried speed. A single, sharp stab of intent - fast and precise, aid at the thinnest point of resistance he could find. The rubber band absorbed the impact without rippling. It didn’t even flex.

It was as if this "Self" Kenzo was talking about was too flexible, and Raizen couldn’t convince it to let him through.

Minutes passed. Real minutes. The sun moved. The mist thinned. The dripping from the canopy slowed as the morning dried the upper branches. And Raizen stood at the edge of a platform in Ukai, hand raised, failing.

Again. And again. And again.

Each ti, he found the resistance. Each ti, it held. He ca at it from every angle he could think of - steady pressure, sudden bursts, slow builds, pulling, pushing, circling, everything at once. The rubber band stretched. And always held.

His arms were shaking. Not from cold. From effort - the deep, systemic exhaustion of a body being asked to do sothing it had never done before and didn’t have the vocabulary for.

"Hey."

Kenzo’s voice. Quiet. Not instructional. Just present.

"Don’t think about breaking through. Think about what’s on the other side."

Raizen looked at him. Kenzo’s eyes were calm. The eyes of soone who’d stood in this exact spot before and knew what it felt like.

Raizen turned back to the forest.

What’s on the other side.

He raised his hand. One more ti. Slower now. Less force. Less effort. Instead of pushing against the resistance, he pushed into it. Let the rubber band wrap around his reach instead of fighting it. Let the pressure build without trying to break it.

And reached.

Not for the barrier. Not for the Eon. For the thing beneath it, whatever it was. The thing Kenzo had described - the part of him that moved before he decided to move, that acted before he chose to act. The thing that lived in the gap between who he thought he was and who he actually was.

He reached for it with all of his might.

And sothing snapped.

The resistance, gone. Completely. But it wasn’t just that – it didn’t feel like it. Sothing deeper. The feeling wasn’t pain. It was the sensation of touching sothing inside his mind he was never supposed to touch. Sothing that was inside of him but wasn’t quite him. Alive.

Raizen’s eyes went wide.
