Due to the view being partially blocked by nearby zombies and shelves, Wang Zhifan couldn’t see if the creature hanging from the ceiling with its neck suddenly elongated bit anything. But then he heard a loud crash of shelves collapsing in front, followed by a swarm of zombies furiously howling, and then they, together with the creature hanging from the ceiling, rushed out of the supermarket in pursuit. Within seconds, most of them had surged out of the supermarket doors!
"It seems that guy got away."
Since many of the creatures in the supermarket rushed out at once instead of attacking a target inside, it was evident that the Assassin player who had snuck in to get supplies and was noticed by the zombies had escaped.
Seeing this, Wang Zhifan erged from behind the pillar where he was crouching and hiding, quickly walked through the nearby shelves, and passed through the pathway leading to the supermarket’s automatic security doors, where there were only a few zombies left. He soon arrived at the inside of the supermarket’s entrance, past two rows of collapsed shelves.
At this spot, he noticed sothing on the supermarket floor that hadn’t been there before—a few small fresh red blood droplets. They were tiny and not nurous, but they clearly belonged to a human who had been freshly wounded.
"The Assassin was injured earlier, but the injury shouldn’t be too severe. This blood must be what attracted the zombies to swarm after him."
After a brief contemplation, Wang Zhifan walked out of the supermarket door and briskly along the street outside, preparing to search for his next target.
Just thirty ters from leaving the supermarket entrance, he noticed that the supermarket zombies that had rushed out were starting to return, including that special creature with an unusually long neck and limbs.
The returning zombies seed to ignore Wang Zhifan, standing on the nearby street, but he noted that the special creature was chewing sothing. From what was visible, it appeared to be a mix of flesh and fabric.
"These zombies are quite territorial—they chased for a few seconds and gave up when they couldn’t catch him. It’s a characteristic worth noting."
At this mont, Wang Zhifan saw few wandering zombies on this street, as they had been previously cleared by other players, and he saw no players either, since they had long hidden themselves or were searching for their needed supplies elsewhere.
"The supplies I’ve collected are enough for three days. Next, I’ll find a suitable place to lay low."
Thanks to the imnse advantage brought by the Chapter of Obscurity pendant, Wang Zhifan had smoothly secured enough water and food for three days. He didn’t need to risk being surrounded and bitten by zombies for a can of salted fish like that previous player in the supermarket. Now, he just needed to choose a safe place to spend the next few days.
"So, where is the most suitable place for to stay for now? A secret room? A balcony with a wide view? A basent? Or inside a tall building?"
Wang Zhifan began to closely monitor his surroundings while contemplating the best place for him to settle.
Under the general circumstances of this Great Catastrophe scenario, choosing a dwelling as far as possible from groups of zombies and relatively hidden was most appropriate. That would significantly reduce the threats to players, avoiding constant combat with nearly endless hordes of zombies.
But given Wang Zhifan’s current condition, almost all zombies wouldn’t actively attack him. So places with fewer zombies and places with more were equally safe for him. In fact, areas with a concentration of zombies might be more suitable for him to reside.
Because the places with many zombies were places other players wouldn’t approach unless for specific purposes, he could hide there without worrying about disturbances in his peaceful ti.
"To avoid unnecessary trouble, I’ll choose a building with a dense zombie population that has little search value. That way, I should remain undisturbed until the end of the scenario.
At the sa ti, the place I choose should have a wide view and easy escape routes in preparation for the attack of the Zombie King two days later."
After a brief thought, Wang Zhifan locked onto a distant target on the street—a towering building beside the main road in the distance. The building was covered entirely by dark glass curtain walls, obscuring the interior view. The entrance was visibly crowded with zombies—a clear indication that more zombies were inside, making it seem a perfect match for his requirents.
Thus, without lingering any longer on the street, Wang Zhifan accelerated, reaching a speed that would surpass a 100-ter sprint champion in the real world, though it was just his normal running speed, and soon arrived at the building’s entrance.
Standing outside the building, he first confird that the large group of zombies ahead of him showed no reaction to his presence. Then he saw many zombies indeed in the lobby on the building’s first floor, each wandering around the front desk area, with two Caucasian female zombies, half rotted, leaning heads on the front desk inside the counter.
"This building seems to be a comrcial one, not likely to contain useful resources for player survival. Plus, with so many zombies inside, as long as there’s no boss creature, it perfectly fits my requirents."
Quickly judging the type of building in front and determining it was unlikely players would be interested, Wang Zhifan proceeded cautiously, striding boldly past the zombies in front of him into the downstairs lobby of the building’s first floor.
During this process, none of the at least a hundred zombies around him paid any attention to him, as if he were an unnoticeable mber of their group, allowing him to pass through the zombies collective and walk from the building’s exterior to the front desk area, then towards a side corner where the stairway door was tightly shut.
Though Wang Zhifan spotted the elevator on this floor, with its doors still open, considering the possibility of no power in the building, or even with power the elevator might malfunction, he opted for the stairs.
He then attempted to push the stairway door with his hand but found it immovable. So he drew his Wolf-Slaying Blade, forcefully breaking the tightly shut stairway door, confirming no hidden dangers inside before entering.
Before long, Wang Zhifan reached the third floor of this building, where he started selecting rooms to his liking.
So looked like offices, others like eting rooms, and so like executive offices, each containing zombies. The larger the space, the more zombies, often dozens or even hundreds.
"This place should work—it looks like so executive’s office. The space is ample, with good lighting, and the glass curtain wall allows observation of the entire main street outside without being seen. It’s ideal for monitoring the exterior and not too high up, so I can directly jump out in case of an ergency, given my current physical condition."
Having finished pondering, Wang Zhifan once again drew his Wolf-Slaying Blade, and with a single slash, took out the only zombie in this room he fancied—a Caucasian old man zombie.
