Now reading: Chapter 511: The Window II: Madrid from Glory Of The Football Manager System, a Sports novel by Malinote.

The System had been tracking options since December. The scouting database, fed by David Carter’s analysis team and the two recruitnt specialists, had identified eleven midfielders across Europe who were available, affordable, and compatible with the Palace system. I reviewed the list that afternoon with Sarah and Dougie.

Most were wrong. Too old. Too expensive. Too slow. Too limited technically. Two were interesting. One was perfect.

Mateo Kovačić. Twenty-three years old. Croatian. Sitting on Real Madrid’s bench behind Toni Kroos, Luka Modrić, and Casemiro. Getting fifteen, twenty minutes a ga when he got on at all. His talent was undeniable. His frustration was public. And his contract situation was the kind of leverage that made January loans possible.

Sarah watched three hours of footage in one sitting. She ca to my office at nine that evening, her eyes tired but her voice sharp.

"He’s press-resistant. Ninety-third percentile in progressive carries. Eighty-eighth in passes under pressure. He can play as a six or an eight. He’s comfortable receiving on the half-turn in tight spaces, which is the single most important skill in our system."

She paused. "He’s Neves with a different engine. Neves thinks three passes ahead. Kovačić carries three passes ahead. Together, they’d be the best midfield pivot in the league outside of City."

"Availability?"

"Real Madrid are open to a loan. Zidane doesn’t want an unhappy player in the dressing room, and Kovačić has been pushing for minutes since October. Chelsea are interested but haven’t formalised anything. They’re still negotiating with Conte about transfer targets, and the politics at Stamford Bridge are slowing everything down."

"So we move first."

"We move first."

I called Dougie. Dougie called Real Madrid’s sporting director. And the conversation, which should have been a cold negotiation between two clubs with no prior relationship, was instead a warm discussion between two organisations that had been building trust since the sumr.

Jas Rodríguez had done this. Not deliberately, not strategically, but simply by being himself. The loan from Real Madrid to Crystal Palace had been a gamble for both sides, a World Cup golden boot winner going to a club that had finished seventeenth the previous season, and it had worked beyond anyone’s expectations.

Rodríguez had told the people at Madrid that Danny Walsh was "the best manager he had worked with since Ancelotti." He had told them that Palace’s system allowed him to play the kind of football he had been missing at the Bernabéu. He had told them that the coaching staff were world-class, the culture was healthy, and the project was real.

Real Madrid trusted Crystal Palace because Jas Rodríguez had given them reason to trust. And that trust, built over almost six months of a single player’s testimony, was worth more than any transfer fee.

The Kovačić loan was agreed in forty-eight hours. Six-month deal. Palace covering the wages. No option to buy, because Real Madrid were not selling, but the loan itself was a statent: one of the biggest clubs in the world was sending a second player to Crystal Palace because they believed in what Danny Walsh was building.

Kovačić arrived at Beckenham on January 10th. He walked through the doors at nine in the morning, a slim, quiet, focused young man with a handshake that was firr than his fra suggested and eyes that took in everything without revealing anything. I t him in the reception area. Anita, who had been briefed by Jessica, had his na badge ready. Barry had his training kit laid out. Rebecca had his dical scheduled for ten.

"Mateo. Welco to Crystal Palace."

"Thank you, mister. Jas told this was a special place. He was not wrong."

I walked him through the building. The corridors. The analysis suite. The gym. The pitches, where the first team were doing a light session under David Jones’s supervision. I introduced him to Neves, who he knew from international football.

The two of them shook hands with the quiet respect of n who had competed against each other and recognised the quality on both sides.

I introduced him to Kirby, who looked at the Croatian international with the wide eyes of an eighteen-year-old eting soone he had watched on television. Kovačić shook Kirby’s hand and said: "Jas tells you are very good. I look forward to playing beside you."

Kirby said: "Thank you." Then, after Kovačić walked away, he turned to and said: "Did Mateo Kovačić just say he’s looking forward to playing beside ?"

"Yes."

"Is this real?"

"It’s real, Nya."

Rodríguez was in the gym when Kovačić arrived. The Colombian saw the Croatian through the glass doors, stopped his shoulder press mid-rep, and walked out with the barbell still racked.

The two of them embraced in the corridor with the warmth of teammates who had shared a dressing room at the biggest club in the world. Rodríguez said sothing in Spanish. Kovačić replied in Spanish. Then Rodríguez switched to English and said, loudly enough for the corridor to hear: "Now we have two of Madrid’s best. They will regret letting us go."

Kovačić smiled. The first smile I had seen from him. It was small, controlled, but real. "They already regret it, Jas. Modrić told so."

The Netflix crew had arrived two days earlier.

January 8th. Six people and fourteen equipnt cases. Elena Vasquez, the director, walked into Beckenham at seven-thirty in the morning with the specific, purposeful energy of a woman who had fild the All Blacks’ haka and Barcelona’s La Masia graduation ceremony and was now turning her attention to a football club in South London that was, in her words, "the best story in world football right now."

Her crew was small and professional. Tomás, the lead caraman, a Chilean who moved through spaces like he was part of the furniture, his handheld Sony FS7 finding angles that nobody else saw.

He shot in 4K, the detail so crisp that you could read the brand on a player’s boot laces from forty yards. Ruth, the sound engineer, who wore Sennheiser headphones the size of dinner plates and operated a wireless audio rig that could isolate a whispered conversation across a crowded canteen from thirty feet away.

A second caraman, also nad Marcus (not to be confused with our Marcus Webb, the gantry analyst, which caused imdiate and sustained confusion that Elena resolved by dubbing them "Gantry Marcus" and "Film Marcus," a solution that both Marcuses found intolerable and everyone else found hilarious).

A lighting technician nad Davi, who spent the first morning walking through every room in Beckenham with a light ter, mapping the natural light sources and identifying the positions where he could place discreet LED panels without disrupting the players’ routines.

And a production assistant nad Clara, twenty-four, hyper-organised, who appeared to run the entire operation through a clipboard and a phone that never stopped buzzing.

Their equipnt was unobtrusive by design. Elena had learned from previous shoots that the size of the cara determined the behaviour of the subject. A large broadcast rig with a boom microphone and a spotlight turned people into perforrs.

A small handheld with a discreet lapel mic allowed them to forget they were being fild. Tomás’s FS7 was compact enough to hold at hip height, shooting from below the eyeline, capturing faces and reactions without the confrontational feel of a lens aid directly at soone’s face.

Ruth’s audio rig used wireless lapel microphones that she could clip to a player’s training top in under five seconds, so small they were invisible beneath the fabric. The whole setup was designed to disappear.
