Capítulo 568: Chapter 287: “What Are You Mumbling About?” (Part 2)

In fact, the claws reaching from Hell Abyss had already quietly grasped his soul along with the Gold Coins placed in his pocket.

“Oh~ it’s just as you said, but… don’t all professionals rise step by step?”

Detecting the faint resistance in Abi’s words, the male voice’s tone shifted, transforming from the original hushed temptation to an uplifting encouragent.

“Now… let’s ruthlessly carve out the first pot of Gold on your future professional path from those damned casino owners!”

The warning that had just risen in his heart was buried by desire in the blink of an eye, his emotions subtly guided.

On Abi’s face, pale under the sunlight, was excitent and thrill for those Coins soon to be pocketed, gleaming with a golden light.

He strides toward another casino in town.

A magical glimr flashed across the surface of the hard object hidden beneath his shirt.

Humans, after all, are rely humans.

No matter how many warnings are given, how many tis they are repeated, setting countless harrowing examples before them.

Envy, lust, gluttony…

As long as there’s greed deep within, those who feed on desire and souls beco like fireflies in the night, very conspicuous.

Everyone starts out being extrely vigilant about themselves.

But as long as a hand reaches out and clamps the object of desire within its grasp, with a few simple enticing words, it’s only a step away from complete downfall…

No rush, “His” target is certainly not this cheap soul which hasn’t even attained a Professional Level yet.

Patience is everything’s premise.

“Do you think if I win too much at the sa casino, soone might notice sothing? Maybe I should visit Neum, I’ve heard the casinos there are much bigger and more nurous than those in River Valley Town.”

Words mired in desire, gradually leading towards the abyss, echoed in the air.

No need to even think, experiences repeated over millennia, the world’s finest enticing words co to “him” as if by instinct:

“Of course! In a big city like Neum…”

The raspy male voice paused abruptly, unusually stopping mid-sentence.

Abi was stunned for a second, instinctively opening his mouth to ask:

“What about a big city like Neum?”

“Speak up!”

“What’s wrong with you?”

But only cold silence responded to him.

Fearful that the source of hope amid his downward-spiraling life would vanish, Abi’s face unwittingly turned desperate.

Just as he was about to find a secluded alley to check the item in his bosom closely.

A long and firm hand, with a silver ring on its index and ring fingers, lightly landed on his shoulder.

“What were you mumbling about?”

Abi’s body jerked involuntarily in fright.

Turning around instinctively, the most familiar face ca into view.

“Mr. Xia, Xia Nan… how, how could you be here?”

With a suspicious look, Xia Nan scanned the alard youth’s face without directly answering, just gesturing towards the adventurer association across the street:

“What do you think?”

“Ha, haha…” Abi laughed awkwardly, his face stiff, attempting to change the topic deliberately, “My apologies for speaking out of turn, where is Chief Adeline, isn’t she with you?”

“She has her own business to attend to.”

Not letting him change the subject as he wanted, Xia Nan asked again:

“What were you talking to yourself about just now?”

“N-nothing.” Abi’s eyes darted wildly, seemingly scrambling to find an explanation, stamring his response.

“I just won so money at the casino last night, got a bit overexcited.”

While speaking, he even patted the bulging pouch at his waist, as if this gesture would lend credibility to his explanation.

“Are you free any evening these days? How about I treat you to a al?”

After hesitating slightly, considering the Petrified Lizard mission he just accepted from the Association Second Floor, Xia Nan shook his head:

“I might not be free these days; let’s talk about it when there’s a chance later.”

“But…”

Under Abi’s intense gaze, Xia Nan glanced at his waist pouch.

“Even though there’s a sheriff in town, it’s ultimately a place where adventurers gather, not entirely safe.”

“I suggest you go and deposit the Coins in a hotel or bank as soon as possible; don’t carry too much cash on you, or you might be in danger if soone finds out.”

“Y-yes, you’re right! I’ll go deposit the money right away.” Like a weight lifted, Abi nodded repeatedly.

Noticing the other’s haste, seemingly eager to end this conversation, Xia Nan refrained from saying more.

After a few polite exchanges, he bid farewell and left.

But before leaving, he took another glance at the direction of Abi’s chest, inside the shirt.

And it was this final glance that seed to touch Abi’s sore point, causing cold sweat to run down his face, freezing him in place.

It wasn’t until Xia Nan completely disappeared among the street crowd far away that he ca back to his senses.

His right hand instinctively reached upwards, touching the shirt on his chest.

Before he could even touch the hard object, the familiar voice once again sounded in his mind, allowing him to breathe a sigh of relief.

“That guy with black hair… do you know him?”

The previously husky voice now carried a subtly indescribable tone.

Abi’s questions about the previous sudden silence silently dissipated, driven by an instinctual inertia, he answered the male voice’s question without hesitation:

“‘Gray Sword’ Xia Nan, he’s quite a famous adventurer in River Valley Town. He got his Professional Level last year, and I just happened to encounter him on a mission last ti.”

“Why, is there sothing wrong with him?”

Oddly, the magnetic male voice, which always answered without omission and was friendlier than casino waitresses, fell silent facing his question.

After waiting for a long ti, nearly thinking sothing had gone wrong again.

A response finally echoed within his skull.

It wasn’t complex, just four words:

“Stay away from him.”

With a Wooden Sword on his back, Xia Nan walked through the streets, recalling the recent interaction with Abi in his mind.

After getting a mission from the second floor, having bought a Petrification Resistance Potion, he happened to see Abi across from the association, being a forr teammate, he figured he would go say hello.

Little did he know…

Possessing a Perception Attribute far exceeding professionals of the sa level, reaching double digits, he indeed noticed Abi’s unnatural behavior.

The other seed to be hiding sothing from him, sothing that they didn’t want him to know about.

Judging from his perception, that sothing seed to be hidden inside his shirt near the chest area.

So he must figure out what secrets this once-close then-distanced teammate is harboring? Following, interrogating, or even resorting to harsh questioning to force out what he’s hiding?

Absolutely not.

Not enough curiosity, his nature wasn’t like that.

In this world, it’s utterly normal for a person to have secrets.

If anyone around him acted strangely, and he had to dig into every reason, Xia Nan might as well forget about enjoying his holiday, not to ntion already preparing for an upcoming mission.

Additionally, from his yearlong experience as an adventurer and information picked up from fellow travelers at inns, he knew following curiosity blindly could easily embroil one into unnecessary dangers.

What if Abi was carrying sothing like a piece of the Devil, and getting involved led to getting marked, that would be disastrous.

All he needed was to be sure anything Abi was hiding posed no threat to himself.

About that, during the conversation, Xia Nan discreetly sensed, and found no trace of dangerous signals.

That was already sufficient.

Dismissing distracting thoughts, he oriented himself toward the direction of “Rock Hamr” Blacksmith Shop.

His Beheading Longsword suffered severe damage, and having accepted the Petrified Lizard hunting task, he needed a transitional Longsword weapon before officially setting off.
