Capítulo 627: Chapter 314: Embers (Part 2)

It’s not because she didn’t care about her fallen comrades. Wanderer Shajin and she had worked together for years, already comrades who could rely on each other, backing each other up in battle; Joshua was soone Margaret personally negotiated with his family to bring out from the big city, with hopes pinned on him to play a significant role as a caster in the future, also a key to the Oathkeeper Blackwood Squad’s advancent.

Two such comrades perishing in what seed like an ordinary investigation mission was a heavy blow both personally and for the team.

As the captain, Margaret was perhaps the most disheartened person on the scene.

But the enemy was right in front of them, the battle far from over. Her character and professional conduct would never allow Margaret to show any sign of collapse at such a mont.

Instead, she focused her entire being on the battle, trying to lead this broken squad out of their predicant, relying on the strength that had carried her through all these years.

She might be a Level 4 [Swordsman], indeed, in terms of actual combat ability, even surpassing most adventurers of the sa level due to the uniqueness of her profession.

But the enemies Margaret had to face right now were four Challenge Level 1 Little Devils (the one that killed Joshua had also joined in).

If it were a one-on-one situation, fighting them one after another, she was confident she could take them down without even getting injured.

Yet now she faced the simultaneous assault of four Little Devils.

This ant Margaret had to be wary of attacks from four directions at once, and if her movents were even slightly exaggerated in trying to inflict enough damage on a particular enemy, a steel fork would pierce her body from a blind spot.

In the midst of such an intense battle, if she were to sustain an injury enough to affect her ability to move, it would serve as the breakthrough point to break the balance and lead to her complete defeat.

“This can’t go on any longer!”

In her ears, the Dwarf’s roars grew increasingly weak, and their distant temporary ally had already perished with the mighty Beard Demon, causing the situation on the field to rapidly deteriorate.

Margaret gritted her teeth, a determined look flashing in her eyes.

The longsword, which had been forming a defensive curtain, blocking attacks from all sides, suddenly halted, returning to her side as she slightly gathered strength.

In just a brief mont, a steel fork found an opening and grazed her flank, leaving a deep bloody mark.

The next second, sharp sword light exploded suddenly, transforming into an arc of sword light covering two hundred and seventy degrees in front of her, driving back the Little Devils that were closing in.

A fleeting mont.

By the ti the sword light dissipated, Margaret, who had been standing there monts ago, had successfully escaped the encirclent of the devils, retreating nearly several dozen ters away.

—[Circular Slash Spin].

One of the battle skills she had mastered, its effect was executing a powerful strike while providing an instant speed boost to retreat and distance herself.

Typically used in situations requiring a temporary retreat or escaping an encirclent.

Margaret had no intention of fleeing now.

Her goal was rely to temporarily separate herself from the Little Devils to gain ti to charge her most potent battle skill, [Energy Storage Slash].

Buzz—

Condensed sharp light quickly gathered on the sword’s surface, Margaret’s gaze steady, firmly watching the four Little Devils screaming and charging towards her from ahead.

In her mind, she calculated the technique’s charge level and the devils’ flight speed.

“I can do it!”

A few breaths’ ti was enough for [Energy Storage Slash] to be ready, and as long as she could execute this strike, at least among the four Little Devils…

Just halfway through her thoughts, a sharp, electric hum, unique to electrical currents and accompanied by glaring thunder, ca from a distance behind the Little Devils.

“That’s…”

—0 Ring Trick·Psionics·Lightning Attraction

Constantly monitoring the battlefield’s situation, Saloyan could not possibly allow the Female Knight to break the deadlock.

The brilliance of magic particles burst forth at the most opportune mont, crackling in the air.

Unlike the previous [Lightning Bolt] that severely injured Xia Nan, [Lightning Attraction] was but a most common and ordinary trick, far less potent by direct asure.

But in the hands of a Demon’s Noble like Saloyan, it still exerted effects far surpassing its level.

“Sizzle!”

Thunder crackled!

Lightning, materialized and whip-like, snaked through the gaps between the Little Devils at a speed far beyond an ordinary person’s reaction ability, landing on Margaret.

An instant numbness and prickling pain coursed through her body, the cold light accumulated on the sword’s surface dissipating, [Energy Storage Slash] disrupted.

That wasn’t the end.

The electric beam that disrupted the Female Knight’s charging hadn’t dissipated but was instead being gently maneuvered by Saloyan’s finger from afar, tethered to the end of the lightning.

Margaret was swiftly pulled towards the Little Devils as if bound and drawn by a chain made of lightning.

Her pupils contracted, her legs dug into the earth leaving two deep trenches in the soil.

Yet it was all in vain.

“Hiss.”

Once again, the faint sound of sothing being stabbed into flesh echoed in the lair.

Four steel forks from the Little Devils punctured Margaret’s right thigh, abdon, left forearm, and right shoulder, respectively.

The good news was that, facing the rapid pull of [Lightning Attraction], the Little Devils had only managed to raise their steel forks just in ti, missing vital points, preventing Margaret from dying instantly;

The bad news was that in such a dire situation, wounds like these, in truth, made little difference compared to a direct hit to vital points leading to imdiate death.

Beside her, witnessing their captain’s plight, Dwarf Soldin, growing weaker under the Thorn Demon’s siege, let out mad roars, frantically swinging his Edged Hamr, seemingly intending to co to her aid.

But it was precisely this that gave the Thorn Demon behind him an opportunity.

Its tail swept out, a bone spur reflecting firelight pierced through the air, breaking the dim tal sheen of Soldin’s skin in an instant, piercing through his back and chest.

With a whimper of pained growl, Soldin was dragged by the inertia of the bone spur, stumbling a few steps before collapsing to the ground.

Blood gushed from his wound, his breath gradually weakening, having already lost the ability to fight.

In just a re dozen seconds, Margaret’s last teammate also fell amidst the devils’ sharp giggles.

She felt pain.

Not rely the physical pain; getting pierced through flesh wasn’t an experience she hadn’t endured before in her decade-long adventurer’s career, with even graver injuries.

What truly caused this valiant Female Knight to lose her grip on maintaining her expression, making her longsword finally fall from her tightly closed palm to the ground, was the sight within the array: the remnants of Wanderer Shajin, sacrificed as a summoning tribute, left with only a few charred clothing fragnts; Mage Joshua, long dead, with lifeless, dull eyes; Dwarf Soldin, struggling on the ground yet unable to rise again due to severe injuries.

It was the impending complete disappearance of the “Oathkeeper Blackwood” squad itself into the depths of the earth, ceasing to exist.

Until today, Margaret still rembered, in a similarly dimly lit underground lair many years ago, her gravely injured and dying father, speaking to her while coughing out blood.

Hoping she could survive, be it as a rchant, a guard, or even staying away from the adventurer’s life, to live without the identity of an adventurer.

Back then, she nodded and promised.

Yet after her father died, she broke that vow.

She neither had the heart to let go of her father’s life’s work disappearing nor wanted to erase the embodint of all her spirit and will that had accompanied her throughout the first half of her life.

And so, Margaret beca an adventurer against her father’s dying wish.

But, after everything, her team, her comrades, even herself, was destined to return to the fate that most adventurers on this continent eventually t…

Succumbing to fate.

For the first ti, after losing all her comrades, with her body gravely injured, and no chance of turning the tide left.

A look of despair crossed Margaret’s face.

She felt pain.

Beside her fell Wanderer Shajin, offered as a sacrificial offering in the array, with only charred fragnts of clothes left of him, beside the long-deceased Joshua whose pupils had solidified to a dead gray.

And herself, gravely wounded and with no way to turn the situation around.

It wasn’t just a fleeting mont of pain.

Replacing it was the searing of fresh blood splashing on her cheek, the abrupt end of the devil’s shrieks, and four headless demon corpses.
