## Step 2: Translation and Polishing

Now I’ll translate the text while applying all the specified rules. I’ll be particularly careful with glossary terms, logical integrity of self-references, and ensuring no Chinese characters remain in the final output.

This Chapter tells the story of Wu Liangchen being called upon by Third Granny to help rescue her son-in-law Liu Dongchuan, who has been kidnapped. Wu disguises himself and goes to pay the ransom, only to discover the kidnapper is soone he’s encountered before.

I’ll translate line by line while ensuring the text flows naturally in English.

## Step 3: Final Translation

Let produce the final translation:

This was destined to be a very lively night.

Wu Liangchen had just returned ho and hadn’t even had ti to wash up when there was a sudden knock at the door.

Wu Liangchen frowned.

Who could it be at this hour?

But when he approached the door, he heard Third Granny’s anxious voice from outside.

"Xiaowu, are you ho, Xiaowu?"

Wu Liangchen was instantly startled and quickly opened the door.

Sure enough, Third Granny was standing there with an anxious expression on her face.

"What’s wrong, Third Granny? Is Third Master ill?" Wu Liangchen asked hurriedly, assuming sothing had happened to the old man.

"It’s not your Third Master, it’s your Brother Liu!"

"My Brother Liu? What happened to him?" Wu Liangchen was surprised.

Liu Dongchuan was in the pri of his life and worked as a small leader at the docks. Although he didn’t earn too much, his inco was stable. What could have happened to him?

"Your Brother Liu was supposed to return ho by evening today, but even late into the night, there was no sign of him. At first, we didn’t worry too much, thinking that perhaps things were busy at the docks, causing him to be delayed."

"But just now, soone broke our window with a brick and threw in a note. It said we need to prepare ten silver coins and go to Bitter Well Alley east of the lawless zone to ransom him, or else we’d never see him again."

Wu Liangchen’s heart skipped a beat.

Damn, he knew Dinghai City had been chaotic lately, but had it really gotten this bad?

Soone actually dared to kidnap and extort a big man like Liu Dongchuan?

But Wu Liangchen quickly cald himself. "Let’s go, Third Granny. I’ll co to your house first to see what’s happening."

With that, Wu Liangchen went back inside to grab a few items, then told his sister, who had also been awakened by the commotion, to watch the house carefully. He closed the door behind him and followed Third Granny to her ho.

As soon as they entered, he saw Sister Liu sitting on the floor, her face awash with tears, while Third Master was taking deep drags from his pipe. The atmosphere in the room was extrely depressing.

Only when Wu Liangchen arrived did the mood lighten sowhat.

"Xiaowu, you have to save your Brother Liu!" Sister Liu cried.

Wu Liangchen hurried to console her. "Don’t worry, Sister Liu. I’ll handle everything."

Then he asked, "Where’s the note?"

"Here it is!" Third Master Liu quickly handed the note to Wu Liangchen.

Wu Liangchen took it and saw a ssage written in extrely crude handwriting.

The contents were roughly what Third Granny had already told him, and at the very end were three crooked characters spelling out Liu Dongchuan’s na.

"What do you think, Xiaowu? Can you tell anything from it?" Third Granny asked hopefully.

"Is this signature at the end in Brother Liu’s handwriting?" Wu Liangchen asked.

"Yes! Your Brother Liu didn’t attend school for long, and his own na is about all he can write, so I recognize it," Sister Liu said.

Wu Liangchen nodded. "Then we can rule out the possibility of a fake ssage. I’ll go and see what’s happening."

"I’ll go with you!" Third Master Liu imdiately offered.

Wu Liangchen smiled. "Third Master, you’d better stay ho and hold down the fort. I think this matter shouldn’t be too serious. If they truly had so deadly grudge against Brother Liu, they would have acted directly, so why go through all this trouble?"

"So I’ll just go over and see what’s happening. There’s really no need for more people."

"But you’ll be alone and vulnerable..." Third Master Liu hesitated.

"Don’t worry, I’m very familiar with all the streets of Dinghai City, big and small. If anything happens, I can escape."

Third Master Liu was about to say sothing more, but Wu Liangchen waved his hand. "Let’s not waste any more ti. I’ll leave now."

With that, he turned to leave.

At this mont, Third Granny quickly took out a small package containing several silver coins and so loose copper pieces.

"This is the ransom!"

Wu Liangchen didn’t refuse, knowing that every second of delay could lead to complications, so he took it and left.

After leaving the compound, Wu Liangchen didn’t imdiately head to the lawless zone. Instead, he found a secluded spot to change into all-black clothes, let his hair down, and smudged so black ash on his face.

With these changes, no one could imdiately recognize Wu Liangchen’s true identity.

After completing these preparations, Wu Liangchen leaped up onto a rooftop in a single bound and sprinted toward the lawless zone.

The distance from Wu Liangchen’s residence to the lawless zone wasn’t short, but by crossing rooftops and ridges, he was taking a direct route, and therefore arrived in no ti.

Wu Liangchen then navigated through the maze of narrow alleys until he finally reached the outside of Bitter Well Alley.

This area was on the outskirts of the lawless zone, and most of the residents were traveling perforrs and martial artists, making the environnt quite disorderly.

Wu Liangchen entered the alley and slowly made his way deeper inside.

The alley wasn’t very long, and in just a mont, Wu Liangchen had reached its end.

On the left side was an abandoned Fire God Temple. A man stood at the temple entrance, and upon seeing Wu Liangchen arrive alone, he coldly asked:

"Are you here to ransom soone?"

Wu Liangchen nodded.

"Did you bring the money?"

Wu Liangchen took out the small package and shook it, producing the jingling sound of coins colliding.

"Follow !"

The man turned and entered the dilapidated temple.

Wu Liangchen followed behind, and they quickly reached the back hall.

A lamp was lit inside, and the door was wide open. Looking in, Wu Liangchen saw Liu Dongchuan bare-chested, wearing only a pair of shorts, his head hanging low as he sat bound to a chair.

There were several wounds on his body, but fortunately, none of them appeared serious.

"Brother Cui, the person is here!"

"Hmm, finally. If he hadn’t shown up, I was planning to send this guy to the authorities for punishnt."

Along with a sowhat familiar voice, a man walked out from the room.

Buckteeth!

So it was this guy!

Upon seeing that distinctive chin, Wu Liangchen was montarily shocked, but then relaxed.

Before coming, he had imagined many possibilities, even thinking it might be martial artists who had a grudge against the dock workers’ guild.

But after seeing this bucktoothed man, all of Wu Liangchen’s concerns dissipated.

Having encountered him before, Wu Liangchen knew these people were just a group of inept thieves without any real skills.

The only puzzling thing was how Brother Liu had gotten involved with these people.

Wu Liangchen recognized the bucktoothed man, but the bucktoothed man didn’t recognize Wu Liangchen.

After all, with his increasing strength over this period, Wu Liangchen’s physique had changed significantly.

Combined with his loose hair and face smudged with black ash, the bucktoothed man only felt this person looked sowhat familiar but couldn’t place him.

"Kid, let tell you, this guy was hitting on my wife and I caught him in the act. By rights, I should have taken him to the authorities, but I’m a kind-hearted person, and he begged so pitifully, so I decided to notify you all. Now hand over the money and take him away, otherwise..." The bucktoothed man stood on the steps and sneered.

His henchn around him glared nacingly at Wu Liangchen.

Liu Dongchuan, who had been drowsy, lifted his head at the sound of voices and looked outside, then froze in surprise.

"Xiaowu?"

"What Xiaowu or Xiaofive, just give the money!" the bucktoothed man barked.

At that mont, Wu Liangchen smiled, then slowly gathered his loose hair back behind his head.

"Well, well, we et again, gentlen!"
