Adam moved like a graceful shadow through the carnage of the battlefield, weaving between corpses, shattered buildings, and the roars of wolves and griffins locked in combat.
He kept his presence buried under the darkness and the sound of battle. His steps were silent, and even his breathing was restrained. Where the beasts fought with fangs and talons, he silently moved unseen, using their violence as cover.
It was an extrely fortunate thing that the brutal battle between the three Mana Core-level beasts had shifted towards the outskirts of Feypore, far away from Adam and his objective.
He was utterly ecstatic. After almost two months of ticulous planning and devious scheming, he was finally going to reach the hidden portal. He had made mighty beasts fight amongst themselves for his own gain. This was an act that he was quite proud of.
At last, the battlefield gave way to the crater’s edge. From there, the ground sloped downwards in a steep, jagged descent. Adam stood at the edge of the crater, his heart beating wildly as anticipation engulfed him.
He inhaled deeply, calming down his excited emotions. Extending his Sphere of Resonance, he observed closely. The bottom of the crater was swallowed by darkness, and the mana density there was so imnse that it seemingly drowned whatever light remained.
The youth lowered himself carefully, then slid down along the loose soil and fractured stone until his montum carried him down towards the darkness.
Finally, his feet touched the ground, and he arrived at the bottom of the crater. Just inhaling the air here seed to open up his mana pathways. He couldn’t help but wonder what would happen once he arrived before the portal.
With bated breath, he slowly walked towards the black cube at the center. From up close, he was able to observe this structure better. He learned that they were carved with mysterious runes. These runes... they served to conceal the place from the outside.
"Is that why this place seems to be perpetually shrouded in shadows?" He murmured as he stepped closer and closer to the black cube.
His lips curled up, and his pace quickened. Finally, he would be able to leave this forsaken land filled with beasts. More than two years had already passed since the Battle of Ravenfell, and in that ti, Adam had suffered greatly.
Finally, he was able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
He arrived before the black cube, intently studying the runes carved on its surface. He was looking for a way to enter the mysterious structure and make his way to the portal.
But in that mont, sothing changed...
Adam’s smile froze abruptly, and his face was instantly shadowed by a dark frown. Right at that mont, just as he had placed his hand on the black surface of the cube, he had felt sothing.
He had felt a presence nearby, one that he wasn’t able to sense just a mont ago. And in the next heartbeat, an eerily familiar voice drifted into his ears, repeating his words from earlier:
"...this place seems to be perpetually shrouded in shadows?"
Adam shuddered.
This voice... it seed familiar to him, but at the sa ti, it felt frighteningly foreign.
It sounded like the voice of the white-robed Adam, but at the sa ti, it didn’t. It sounded like his own voice, but at the sa ti, it didn’t.
The youth slowly raised his head, his senses finally settling on a shadowy silhouette perched atop the edge of the cube, staring at him with dark curiosity.
Adam couldn’t help but retreat in fear, his lips curling into a wide, nervous grin. And the more he observed this creature, the more dread filled his heart.
It was a lanky, ape-like figure with gray skin. Its body was short and thin, its posture was still, and its presence was silent and unnatural. The air around it felt distorted and mysterious, as though it rejected the world itself.
With his vast reservoir of knowledge, Adam instantly realized what his creature was. He had never hoped to encounter this being even in his wildest imagination. Worse still, the aura it was emanating was no weaker than his.
It was a creature that could steal thoughts, mories, and appearances!
Adam’s lips parted, and with a trembling voice, he murmured, "Doppelga—"
But the recognition ca too late...
The gray-skinned creature extended its hand, fingers curling into a claw-like grip. Then, with a sudden pull, it dragged sothing towards itself. In that mont, Adam felt a sharp tug inside his mind.
His thoughts turned sluggish, then one of them was stolen!
Adam’s charred expression was suddenly overco by confusion. He was about to say sothing, about to act on sothing, but he just couldn’t rember it.
"How strange," he murmured.
He shook his head, then proceeded to walk towards the black cube. His objective lay right before him, and his heart couldn’t help but be filled with excitent.
He was looking for a way to enter this mysterious structure and make his way towards the portal.
But in that mont, sothing changed...
Adam’s smile froze abruptly, and he couldn’t help but frown darkly. Right in that mont, just as he had placed his hand on the black surface of the cube, he had felt sothing. He had felt a presence not too far from him, one that he wasn’t able to sense earlier.
He slowly raised his head, his senses finally settling on a lanky, ape-like figure with gray skin sitting at the edge of the cube. Adam couldn’t help but shudder in fear when he realized the identity of this creature.
But before he could even retreat, the gray-skinned creature extended its hand towards him, then clenched at sothing invisible, and pulled it towards itself.
Adam felt a sharp pull invade his mind. His thoughts wavered, then one of them was stolen away from him...
Again.
