An old man in the Chelsea end turned to the woman beside him as the Wigan players jogged away.
"What is happening?" he asked, though he could see what was going on.
He was genuinely finding it hard to comprehend what was going on.
Was that how far his team had fallen?
The woman looked at him, then at the pitch, but it didn’t look like any answer she could offer could make the situation less dreadful.
That seed to be the general feeling around Stamford Bridge.
The noise that had followed Jackson’s goal had long since faded, replaced by the low murmur of a crowd trying to work out how their team had ended up here.
anwhile, the Wigan fans were enjoying themselves imnsely.
There weren’t many of them, but they were making themselves difficult to ignore.
After a while, the Wigan players settled into their positions as the ga threatened to begin again.
The goal took sothing out of Chelsea.
Not enough to stop them attacking, but enough to make every attack feel a little more forced than the one before it.
They still had possession, and they still pushed bodies forward.
Enzo and Palr kept looking for angles, Jackson kept making runs, but there was a difference now.
The confidence from the opening twenty minutes was waning, and it was visibly noticeable.
At this point, Mauricio Pochettino knew that sothing had to be done, though whatever he had to say wasn’t really going to be effective from the sidelines.
And soon enough, he was praying a silent prayer, wishing his team could hold on till the half-ti whistle went.
Thankfully, Wigan were subjected to most of the attacks during the dwindling minutes.
Every clearance was t with a roar from the away end and every interception earned a shout.
Every second that disappeared from the clock seed to make the blue shirts around them a little more impatient, but Mauricio did enough to convey that they should take their ti with the attacks, lest Wigan break on another counter.
Chelsea had chances to build sothing before the break, but the final pass never quite arrived.
A cross sailed too deep and harmlessly rolled through to Amos.
Then another shot from distance struck a red-and-black shirt and spun away.
A mont later, the board of the fourth official went up, showing two minutes of added ti.
And in those remaining seconds, Stamford Bridge urged its team forward one more ti.
"This is probably the last attack of the ga," the comntary ca in as Wigan dug in, bracing themselves for what was to co.
The long ball from Gusto into the box was headed away by Whatmough. only for Palr to recover possession and try again, sending his leg through the ball effortlessly.
This ti Power blocked the cross before it could leave his foot, sending the ball bobbling back out of the box, where Reyes stood.
The latter grabbed the ball and without waiting, he spun around, imdiately dashing towards the Chelsea half with pace and intent.
That almost made the hearts of the Chelsea fans sink, at least, until the referee glanced at his watch and then brought his whistle to his lips, just as Reyes cross the halfway line.
FWEE, FWEEEEEEEE
The sound was greeted very differently depending on where you were standing.
The Chelsea players turned toward the tunnel quickly, so with heads down, others already looking toward Pochettino.
The Wigan players, on the other hand, slowed to a halt after their attempt at another counter was halted by the whistle.
"What a half of football," the comntator said as the Wigan players also began walking towards the tunnel.
"Chelsea struck first only for Wigan to respond. And sohow, against most expectations, it’s the visitors who go into the break ahead."
For a mont, Stamford Bridge seed unsure what to make of it as they stared at the scoreboard.
Wigan Athletic 2.
Chelsea 1.
As the half-ti breaks prevailed across the country, the scores of various 9football gas were making their way through group chats, tilines and comnt sections, but none stuck as much as Chelsea’s versus Wigan’s.
To so, it was funny, seeing a team with a noisy fan base being subjected to so good old toppling over by a small team when all expectations said they should win.
On the live stream of the ga, the comnts were intriguing to say the least.
CrossWavez:How are Wigan 2-1 up at Stamford Bridge?
Zeron_black: I switched over for five minutes to watch the City ga, and now Wigan lead. What happened?
Qweku_V: Leo Calderon happened. He’s playing centre-back ffs.
Deadboy1: Chelsea are actually getting played through by a teenager.
PXIG: Well, we all know who most teams will be going after during the transfer windows this season.
hERbsti: Pep said he was a player he’d like to coach. He said it after the FA Cup final but nobody listened.
Kudo21: Burnley are getting cooked by Villa, and Sheffield United are losing to City. Wigan are the only promoted side causing problems.
Bodd Toehly:Chelsea lost to West Ham last week. Everyone, calm down.
VastroAnt:West Ham literally won a European trophy two months ago. Why are people acting like they’re so random team?
Madreas:I’m still stuck on the fact Wigan are doing this away from ho. Imagine being a Chelsea fan right now.
CoolVamp: Well, imagine being a Wigan fan right now.
Wiganstrand: Best day of my life and it’s not even half-ti.
Pessibro:There’s still another 45 minutes.
Wiganstrand: Don’t care. Let dream.
Masatoshi K: Soone post that Calderon pass again.
Cybersage1: Which one?
Adarsh Sivakumar: Exactly.
The argunts spread in every direction from there.
So people were already treating Wigan as the latest surprise package.
Others were waiting for the second half before committing to anything, and neither group was likely to convince the other before the players ca back out.
