The answer ca the next morning.
Not through Ampelos. Not through an official channel or a formal summons or any of the diplomatic machinery that Lysander had assud would carry it.
It ca through Aite.
She appeared at his door before the palace had fully woken — the grey pre-dawn light still in the corridor, the sounds of the household just beginning — and she said, with the particular precision of soone delivering a ssage that had been given to her very carefully:
"My lady — asks — if you will — co — to the garden. She has — sothing — to tell you."
He was dressed and moving before she finished.
Helen was standing this ti.
Not on the bench — standing near the garden’s far wall where a fig tree grew against the stone, its early leaves catching the low light. She had her arms crossed loosely and the expression of soone who had received information and was still deciding how to carry it.
She said, when he ca through the gate: "He agreed."
Lysander stopped.
"To the treaty."
"To — discussing — the treaty. Formally. With Ampelos. Before — you sail."
"That is — agreent enough."
"Yes," she said. "It is."
She turned to look at the fig tree.
He waited.
She said: "He ca — to — last night. After — the feast. He does not — do that — often."
She said it plainly, without self-pity, the way she said most things — as fact, not complaint.
"He asked — what I — thought. About — the arrangent."
"What did you — tell him."
She said: "I told him — it was — the most — interesting — thing — any Trojan — had ever — proposed — to this palace."
She looked at him sideways.
"He asked — if I — ant — interesting — for Sparta."
"What did you — say."
"I said — interesting — for everyone — in it."
A silence.
The garden birds were starting. The light was shifting toward real morning.
He said: "How did he — receive — the clause. The one — about — your standing."
She was quiet for a mont.
She said: "He did not — object — to it."
"That is — not the sa — as welcoming it."
"No," she said. "It is not."
She turned from the tree and looked at him directly.
"He asked — why it — was — in there. I told him — what you — said to Ampelos. That — a treaty — is more — stable — when — everyone — in the house — is — invested."
"And."
"And he — sat — with it — for a long — ti. Then he — said — it was — reasonable."
She said the word reasonable with the specific flatness of soone reporting a judgnt they were choosing not to editorialize on.
"Reasonable — is enough — to build — on," Lysander said.
"Yes," she said. "I know."
She walked toward the bench and sat.
He sat at his end.
She said: "Paris — ca — to — yesterday. While — you were — with nelaus — and Ampelos."
He stilled.
"He ca — to the — won’s — courtyard. He arranged — it — through — one of — the household — won — who did not — know — she should — not — arrange it."
"What did — he say."
She looked at her hands.
"He was — charming," she said. "He is — very — charming."
"I know."
"He talked — about Troy. About — the sea. About — the things — he wrote — in the letters."
"Did he — ask — you — to leave."
"Not — directly. He asked — if I was — happy."
She said it with a slight quality — not bitterness exactly, sothing more controlled than that. The expression of a woman who had been asked questions whose answers were already known by the person asking and who was tired of the pretense.
"And."
"I told him — I was — working — on it."
Lysander looked at her.
"He did not — understand — what that — ant," she said. "He thought — I was — being — careful. Diplomatic. He said — he would — wait — for the right — mont."
"How long — will he — wait."
She said: "He is — running — out — of patience. I could — see it. He ca — here — for — a specific — thing. He has — been — careful — for — four days. That is — longer — than — he usually — is careful."
"How do you — know — how long — he is — usually — careful."
She looked at him.

He received that.
He said: "He will — push — soon."
"Within — the next — two days. Yes."
"And if — the treaty — is — being — discussed — formally — before — we sail—"
"Then — the ground — shifts," she said. "Yes. He cannot — make — an offer — to take — soone — who — is — formally — part — of — a diplomatic — arrangent — without — it being — a different — kind — of — action — entirely."
She had understood the chanics of it completely.
He said: "You — thought — about this — too."
"All night," she said. "Sa — as you."
He found Paris before the morning al.
Paris was in the guest courtyard — the wide stone space near the outer palace wall — doing sothing with a short bow that appeared to be practicing but was really, Lysander had noticed, the thing Paris did when he was restless. The movents were too loose for real practice. He was burning energy.
He looked up when Lysander ca in.
He said: "You were — up early."
"Yes," Lysander said. He sat on the low wall. "Paris. Sothing — happened — yesterday — while — we were — in the — eting."
Paris lowered the bow.
His face went from restless to attentive — the specific alertness of soone who suspects they’re about to hear sothing they won’t like.
"What — happened."
"Ampelos — and I — t — with nelaus. About — a formal — treaty — between — Troy — and Sparta."
A pause.
"Without — telling ."
"It was — not — planned — formally. It began — as — a conversation. It beca — more."
Paris looked at him.
He said: "A treaty."
"Yes."
"You — went — to Sparta — to — protect — and instead — you — made — a treaty."
"I went — to Sparta — to make sure — you ca ho," Lysander said. "A treaty — does that."
"By — tying — Troy — to Sparta — formally."
"By giving — both sides — sothing — they want — from — a peaceful — relationship. Yes."
Paris set the bow down on the wall beside him.
He looked at the courtyard — the stone, the morning light on it, the distant sound of the palace starting its day.
He said: "And — Helen."
"Helen — is — part — of the — arrangent. In a — formal — capacity."
"aning."
Lysander said: "aning — she has — standing. Written — standing. In a — docunt — that — both — palaces — are — party — to."
He said it carefully. Not she can’t leave now. Not you can’t take her. Just the fact — she has standing in a docunt.
Paris was quiet.
He was doing what Paris did when sothing punctured the performance and reached the real person — sitting with it, the young uncertain face showing through, working through what it ant.
He said: "This — was — her — idea."
"The idea — was mine," Lysander said. "She — agreed — it was — worth — trying."
"She — agreed."
"Yes."
"She — is — choosing — to — stay."
Lysander said: "She is — choosing — to see — if — this — works. That — is — not — the sa — as — choosing — to stay — forever. But it is — what — she has — decided — right now."
Paris looked at him.
The expression on his face was complicated in the way that real feelings were complicated — not one thing, not simple. Lysander watched him process: the loss of the thing he had planned, the particular kind of rejection that isn’t quite rejection, the question of what ca next.
He said: "You — could have — told . Before — you did — this."
"If — I had — told you — before — would you — have — let — do it."
A silence.
Paris said: "No."
"I know," Lysander said. "I am — sorry. I could not — ask — permission — for — sothing — you would — have — stopped."
"It was — my — choice — to make."
"It was — your — choice — and — her — choice — and — Troy’s — future — and — the lives — of — a great — many — people — who did not — choose — anything."
He said it quietly. Not as an attack — as the thing that was true.
Paris stared at him.
Lysander said: "I told you — on the ship — I was — not — against you. I told you — I wanted — to find — a way — that gave — everyone — what they — actually — wanted. Including you."
"And — what — do I — get. From — this."
"You — co ho," Lysander said. "You co ho — to Troy — and you — are — the prince — whose — visit — to Sparta — produced — the best — diplomatic — arrangent — Troy has — made — in twenty years. You are — the one — who opened — the door — to this — relationship. Without — you — coming — here — none of — this — happens."
Paris looked at him.
"You — are — giving — credit — for — your — work."
"I am — giving you — the — truth — of — what — your — visit — produced. The — rest — is — how — you — tell — the — story."
A long silence.
The bow was on the wall between them.
Paris picked it up.
He looked at it.
He said: "She — chose — this."
"She chose — to try — this. Yes."
"Not — ."
Lysander said: "She did not — choose — against — you. She chose — for — herself. That — is — different."
Paris was quiet for a long mont.
Then he said sothing Lysander hadn’t expected.
He said: "In the letters — I wrote — about — the sea — because — I wanted — her — to know — what — it felt — like. To be — free."
"I know."
"I was not — trying — to — trap — her. I was — trying — to — show her — sothing — real."
"I know — that — too," Lysander said.
"Does she — know."
Lysander thought about the garden and the grey eyes and the woman who had said: he wrote to as if I was a person.
"Yes," he said. "She knows."
Paris was still.
Then he put the bow under his arm and walked toward the palace entrance.
At the door he stopped.
He said: "When — we get — ho. You will — tell — how you knew — all of — this — would — work."
"I will — try," Lysander said.
Paris looked at him — the real face, unguarded, younger than his age.
He said: "You are — very — strange — for — a brother."
"I know," Lysander said.
Paris went inside.
The formal eting between Ampelos and nelaus happened that afternoon.
Lysander was present — junior position, left wall, observer. He sat and watched two experienced n do what experienced n did when both sides had already decided they wanted sothing and were now constructing the architecture around the decision.
It was, in its way, beautiful.
The language was precise and formal and Lysander followed almost all of it now — the weeks of Ampelos’s teaching on the ship paying out like a long investnt. He caught the monts where nelaus tested a boundary and Ampelos held it. The monts where Ampelos offered sothing and nelaus accepted with the exact amount of visible deliberation that preserved everyone’s dignity.
The clause about Helen’s standing ca up once.
nelaus raised it — not as an objection, as a clarification. He wanted the specific language. Ampelos looked at Lysander.
Lysander spoke for the first ti in the eting.
He said, carefully: "The queen — of Sparta — is — recognized — as — a formal — party — to this — arrangent — in her — capacity — as — representative — of — the Spartan — household. Her — agreent — is — part — of — the — ratification."
nelaus looked at him.
He said: "Her — agreent — is — required."
"Her — agreent — is — recorded. As — a sign — of — the — arrangent’s — completeness."
A pause.
nelaus said: "This — has — not — been — done — before."
"No," Lysander said. "It has — not."
"Why — now."
"Because — the best — ti — to do — sothing — correct — is — when — you — first — think — of — it."
nelaus looked at him for a long mont.
Then he said sothing to Ampelos in the fast formal pace.
Ampelos responded.
nelaus said: "Agreed."
They walked back to the guest quarters as the sun was setting.
Ampelos said nothing for a while.
Then he said: "You said — the right — thing. In there. About — the best — ti."
"It was — true."
"It was — also — what — he needed — to hear. There — is a — difference — between — things — that are — true — and things — that are — true — and — useful. You — found — the — overlap."
He walked.
"Where — did you — learn — to do — that."
Lysander said: "The sa — place — as everything — else."
"The long — ti — from now."
"Yes."
Ampelos said: "I have — decided — not — to — ask — more — about — that."
"That — is — probably — wise."
"Yes," Ampelos said. "I — thought — so."
They reached the guest quarters.
At the door Ampelos said: "Tomorrow — the treaty — is — written. The day — after — we sail."
"I know."
"When — we return — to Troy — you will — brief — Hector — on — what — happened — here."
"Yes."
"All — of it."
Lysander said: "As much — as — I can."
Ampelos looked at him.
He said: "Lysander."
"Yes."
"You did — sothing — here — that — I — could not — have — done. I am — a good — diplomat. I have — been — doing — this — for — thirty years."
He paused.
"But — I did not — see — what — you saw. About — the queen. About — what — the treaty — needed — to — contain."
He said it flat and factual — not self-deprecating, just accurate.
"I saw — it — because — I was — looking — at — her — as — a person," Lysander said. "Not — as — a — piece."
Ampelos was quiet.
Then: "Yes. That — is — what — I — could not — do."
He went inside.
Lysander stood in the corridor.
He looked at his hands.
Four hundred and — he counted quickly — eighty-three words.
Two days until they sailed.
The treaty was real. The clause was in it. Helen had standing, written standing, in a docunt that both palaces would ratify.
Was it enough?
He didn’t know.
He still didn’t know.
He went to his room and sat on the mat and ran his vocabulary and tried not to think about all the ways it might not be enough, and failed, and thought about them anyway, and eventually fell asleep still thinking.
