Paris had been quiet for six weeks.
Not silent — Paris was constitutionally incapable of silence, he filled rooms as naturally as water filled containers, the specific warm chaos of him present wherever he went. But quiet in a different sense. The restlessness that Lysander had learned to read in him — the particular quality of energy that preceded him doing sothing — had been absent since their return from Sparta.
Lysander had been monitoring it the way you monitor a wound that has healed cleanly: not anxiously, but consistently, checking because the alternative was not checking and the alternative had a cost.
For six weeks: nothing.
Then, on a Tuesday evening, Fylon ca to his room.

He knocked with his specific knock — softer than Hector’s, three taps that were apologetic even in their rhythm, the knock of a man who had spent decades entering rooms at the convenience of others.
Lysander opened the door.
Fylon said: *"Paris had a visitor this afternoon."*
*"Co in."*
He ca in and stood near the window the way he stood in rooms he was not sure he was supposed to be comfortable in — present, contained, ready to leave.
*"Who,"* Lysander said.
*"A rchant. From the eastern route. He arrived this morning with a cargo of bronze ingots and he was in the harbor records — I checked after — he has been through Troy’s harbor four tis in the past two years. Always with legitimate cargo. Always trading normally."*
*"But."*
*"He spent two hours in the palace this afternoon. In the guest room in the western wing. That room is not used for harbor rchants — it is used for diplomatic guests."*
*"Who arranged the room."*
*"Paris’s personal attendant."*
Lysander sat down on the edge of his mat.
He said: *"Did you see the rchant."*
*"Briefly. When he was leaving. A man of perhaps forty. Well dressed for a trader — not ostentatiously, but the specific quality of clothing that says money that does not need to prove itself."*
*"Was anything exchanged. Physically."*
*"I do not know. I was not in the room. I was in the corridor near the western wing on other business when he left."*
*"What was Paris’s manner afterward."*
Fylon thought for a mont.
*"I did not see Paris directly after. But his attendant — the boy Eudoros — was moving quickly when he ca out of the wing. The quick movent of soone who has been given a task and is executing it."*
*"Do you know what the task was."*
*"No. But he went to the archive room. The palace records."*
The archive room. Where the trade docunts were kept. Where the records of previous diplomatic contacts were filed.
Lysander said: *"What ti did Eudoros go to the archive room."*
*"Perhaps an hour after the rchant left."*
*"And you ca to —"*
*"As soon as I understood the pattern,"* Fylon said. *"I did not want to co without sothing useful to say."*
Lysander looked at him.
He had chosen Fylon as the first mber of this loose network precisely because of this — the man’s ability to collect the right information without being asked to collect it, to notice patterns in the ordinary movents of the palace that were invisible to people who moved through it with the entitlent of those who had never needed to watch.
*"Thank you,"* he said. *"This is useful."*
*"Should I find out more about the rchant."*
*"His cargo records. Where he is going next. What he imports and exports and where the route takes him."*
*"I can have that tomorrow."*
*"Thank you, Fylon."*
The old man nodded and went out.

He sat in his room and thought about what he knew.
A rchant with legitimate business history, given a diplomatic guest room by Paris’s arrangent, who subsequently had Paris’s attendant visiting the palace archive. This was not, on its own, evidence of anything. Paris had legitimate comrcial interests, or was entitled to have them — he was a prince of Troy and trade was the lifeblood of what the palace did.
But.
The diplomatic guest room rather than the harbor rchant rooms.
The archive visit afterward.
The six weeks of uncharacteristic quiet that had preceded it.
He ran through what he knew about Paris’s behavior patterns. Paris was not subtle — Lysander had spent months now watching him and had concluded that Paris’s intelligence operated through instinct and social reading rather than strategic planning. He was good at reading people. He was not good at the slow patient accumulation of a plan. Which ant that if Paris was doing sothing planned, either he had changed significantly or soone else was doing the planning with him.
*The rchant,* he thought. *The rchant is the planner.*
He did not know yet what the plan was.
He went to find Cassandra.

She was in the library.
Late now, the palace evening settling into its night sounds, the lamp on the wall at the low setting of the final hours. She looked up when he ca in — the specific alertness she had that was different from anyone else’s alertness, the sense of soone who was never not paying attention to sothing.
He sat across from her.
He said: *"Paris had a visitor today."*
*"I know,"* she said.
*"You saw."*
*"I see things. Not always with eyes."*
He had learned not to push on how she knew what she knew. The chanism was less important than the fact of it.
He said: *"What did you see."*
She set down her tablet.
She said: *"Paris is looking east."*
*"East."*
*"Not Sparta. Not Greece. East."*
He sat with that.
East. The eastern trade routes. The routes that ran through the Anatolian interior toward the edges of what anyone in this world knew. The routes that, in the history he carried, connected the Bronze Age world to resources and peoples and wealth that the palace economies depended on.
The routes that the Collapse would disrupt.
*Oh,* he thought.
*Oh, Paris.*
He said, carefully: *"East — toward what."*
*"I do not see the destination clearly. I see the direction. And I see — opportunity. He sees opportunity, and soone has shown it to him."*
*"The rchant."*
*"Soone."*
He leaned back against the shelf and looked at the ceiling.
This was different from Sparta. Sparta had been about desire — personal, specific, a woman and the feeling she represented. This was different. Soone was showing Paris a comrcial opportunity, or a political one, to the east. And Paris, whose need to matter had not been satisfied by the Spartan resolution — had never been fully satisfied by anything, because that was the specific shape of his hunger — was interested.
The question was: what was it. What was east that soone was offering Paris access to.
He said: *"Is it dangerous."*
Cassandra said: *"Most things Paris does are dangerous. This one — I cannot see the shape of it yet. It is too early."*
*"But you felt it enough to know the direction."*
*"Yes."*
*"And you ca to the library instead of coming to ."*
She looked at him.
*"You would have co to ,"* she said. *"You always do, when sothing shifts. I was waiting."*
He looked at her.
*"You were waiting,"* he said. *"In the library. With a tablet."*
*"I was also reading,"* she said. *"The two are not mutually exclusive."*
He almost smiled.
He said: *"I need to know what the rchant is connected to. His route, his contacts, what he trades in specifically. Fylon is getting the cargo records."*
*"The cargo records will show you what he declares. Not what he carries that he does not declare."*
*"I know. But the declared records will tell his route. His route will tell who he is connected to. His connections will tell what he might be offering Paris."*
She was quiet for a mont.
She said: *"Paris in Sparta was sothing you could address directly. You were there. You could speak to the people involved."*
*"Yes."*
*"Paris looking east is different. You cannot be in every place he might go."*
*"I know."*
*"So what will you do."*
He thought about it.
He said: *"Understand it first. Before I decide what to do I need to know what it actually is. I have a direction — east — and a connection — a rchant — and a behavior — Paris’s attendant visiting the archive. That is not enough to act on. It is enough to watch."*
*"Watching takes ti."*
*"Yes. Everything takes ti."*
She looked at him with the expression she had when she was deciding whether to say sothing she had been holding.
She said: *"There is sothing I have been thinking about. Since you ca back from Sparta."*
*"Tell ."*
*"In Sparta you changed sothing. The treaty. Helen’s na in the docunt. Those were real changes — I can feel the difference in what I see when I look at certain futures."*
*"Yes."*
*"But Paris is still Paris. The thing in him that wanted Sparta — it did not leave. You redirected it. You gave him a different story about what happened there. But the wanting is still there."*
*"I know."*
*"What he wants,"* she said, *"is not reducible to Helen. Or to the east. Or to any specific thing. What he wants is to be extraordinary. To do sothing that changes the room he is in. And that — that wanting — I cannot see it being redirected indefinitely."*
Lysander said: *"I know that too."*
*"Then what do you do with it."*
He was quiet for a mont.
He said: *"I give him a real thing to be extraordinary about. Not redirect the wanting — give it sowhere real to go. Sothing that matters and that he can actually claim."*
*"And if the eastern opportunity is that thing."*
*"Then I need to understand it well enough to know whether it is sothing that helps Troy or sothing that hurts it. If it helps — I do not stop it. If it hurts — I need to understand it before I can offer the alternative."*
Cassandra looked at him.
She said: *"You are not trying to manage Paris."*
*"No."*
*"You are trying to give him a life that satisfies him."*
*"I am trying to give him a life that satisfies him without destroying everyone around him in the process. The distinction matters."*
She was quiet for a mont.
Then she said: *"That is harder than managing him."*
*"Considerably,"* Lysander said.
She picked up her tablet.
He picked up his shard.
They sat in the library in the late evening quiet, and Lysander thought about Paris looking east while he ran through his vocabulary, and added the words from today’s conversations, and counted.
Six hundred and eighty-eight.
