He found Cassandra in the corridor outside the library.

Not inside — outside, standing at the window at the end of the passage that looked west. She was there when he turned the corner and he stopped for a mont before she heard him.

She was very still.

’She has already spoken to Paris,’ he thought. ’He ca to her and she said what she felt and now she is standing at the west-facing window.’

He ca and stood beside her.

Below, the harbor. The barrier pilings. A ship coming in from the south.

She said: "He was here."

"Yes."

"He asked what I feel."

"What did you tell him."

"The truth. What I feel." She looked at the ship below. "He listened the way Paris listens — completely, without interrupting, and then asked one question."

"What question."

"He asked: if you were , what would you do." She paused. "I told him I could not answer that. He said: I know. I wanted to hear you say it anyway." She turned from the window. "He is going."

"Yes."

"Not might. Is."

"Yes."

She looked at him.

"He decided before he ca to ," she said. "He ca to understand what he was deciding."

"Yes."

"That is a kind of courage."

"Yes."

They stood for a mont.

"Tell what you feel now," Lysander said.

"The sa thing I have been feeling. Closer." She looked west again. "The thread you have been holding — the pattern you built, the network, the two years — what he finds in the west will pull on it. Change the shape of it."

"How."

"I cannot see how. I feel the tension. The thread pulled from one end."

"Can it be prevented."

She was quiet.

"Not in the way you are thinking."

"Tell the way I am thinking."

"You are thinking: if I prevent Paris from going, the tension on the thread does not happen. The weight I have been describing does not arrive." She turned to him fully. "But the weight is not Paris. Paris is the path the weight travels. The weight exists without him."

"It would find another path."

"Yes. A different shape. Different timing. Not smaller."

He stood with that.

’The weight exists without him,’ he thought. ’The war — if that is what she is describing, and I have been assuming it is — does not require Paris to exist. It requires the conditions that already exist. Paris is a path, not a cause.’

’Which ans stopping Paris delays nothing and loses the intelligence he might bring back.’

’Which ans the calculation is different from what I have been calculating.’

"The thread," he said. "If he pulls on it — does it hold."

She was quiet for a long mont.

"I do not know," she said. "What I know is that you built it to hold under pressure. You have been building it to hold under pressure for two years. Whether this specific pressure is what you built it for — I cannot see that."

"But."

"But a thread that has been tested survives differently than one that has not."

"Yes."

She looked at the ship that had co in. It was docked now. The crew moving on the deck.

"There is sothing else," she said.

"Tell ."

"What he finds in the west. It will not only be a threat." She paused. "There is sothing there that could change the weight. Reduce it. I cannot see what. I feel its possibility."

"A possibility."

"Yes. Not a certainty. A real possibility."

He looked at the docked ship.

’A real possibility,’ he thought. ’Which is not nothing. In a situation where most things are moving toward worse, a real possibility of sothing different is worth holding.’

’It is not comfort. It is arithtic.’

’I can work with arithtic.’

"Thank you," he said.

She went back to the library without responding. She sotis did this — ended conversations by leaving them rather than closing them. He had learned to find it honest rather than rude.

He walked to the supply office.

He did not sit down.

He stood at the window and looked at the harbor.

’The weight exists without Paris,’ he thought. ’Paris is a path. Blocking one path does not remove the weight. The weight finds another path. Probably one I cannot see and cannot prepare for.’

’If I block Paris: the weight arrives differently. I lose Paris’s trust. I lose the intelligence he might bring back. I lose the possibility Cassandra described — real, not certain, but real.’

’If Paris goes: the thread I have built is pulled. It might hold. It might not. But I know what the tension looks like and I can be present for it.’

’And Paris cos back with sothing.’

’Or he does not co back.’

He stood with that last thought for a mont.

’He might not co back.’

’That is in the arithtic too.’

He turned from the window and sat down.

He pulled the coastal watch report toward him and read the third column.

Three weeks of decreasing arrival numbers. Going on four.

He read it twice.

Then he set it aside and went to find Ampelos.

Ampelos was at his desk.

He looked up when Lysander ca in and waited.

Lysander sat. He told him what Cassandra had said. All of it — the thread, the weight, the possibility she had described, the path. He said it in order.

Ampelos listened.

When Lysander finished, Ampelos looked at the eastern correspondence on his desk.

He said: "She said it would change the thread you have been holding."

"Yes."

"Not break it."

"She said: pull on it. Change the shape."

"There is a difference."

"Yes."

Ampelos was quiet.

"The possibility she described," he said. "Sothing in the west that could reduce the weight."

"Yes."

"She could not see what."

"No."

"But it is real."

"She said: real. Not certain."

Ampelos looked at the desk.

"Paris going west," he said. "With the comrcial cover, the coastal freight framing, my contacts providing the introduction to the Argolid network—"

"He is already going," Lysander said. "The question is whether he goes with a frawork or without one."

Ampelos looked at him.

"You have decided."

"I have decided to sit with it until tomorrow morning and then decide. But yes. I know what I am going to decide."

"Then tell now and save the night."

"He goes with a frawork. Specific objective. Specific return date. Everything he learns cos back to us. No commitnts without authorization. No open-ended engagent."

"And if he finds the Argolid king and the king wants to negotiate."

"He listens. He does not commit. He returns and we negotiate."

"And if sothing happens that he did not plan for."

Lysander looked at him.

"Then we deal with what happened," he said. "That is always the answer. You cannot plan for everything. You can be present for what you did not plan."

Ampelos looked at the correspondence.

"Two weeks to prepare the frawork properly," he said. "The comrcial cover, the contact introductions, the return schedule."

"Two weeks."

"Yes."

"Start tomorrow."

He went out.

Arsini was at the harbor school.

He passed it on the way back. She was at the window inside, reviewing records in the late afternoon light. She looked up when she saw him through the glass. She ca to the door.

"The session today," she said. "Deia and Antiphus t."

"How was it."

"I sat in the corner and watched. They spent an hour comparing notation systems. At the end Antiphus said: you have solved a problem I have been carrying for three years." She looked at her tablet. "Deia said: you gave the dical vocabulary to na what Sena does. I gave you the spatial notation to record it. We needed each other."

"Thirteen years old."

"And a palace physician who has been practicing for twenty years." She made a note. "They are eting again next week."

He stood at the door.

"Paris," he said.

She looked up.

"He is going west."

She held her tablet.

She said nothing for a mont.

"When," she said.

"Two weeks. Approximately."

She looked at the harbor through the school window.

"He said: I am still deciding," she said. "When he practiced the eastern dialect phrase."

"He decided."

"Yes." She made another note — not about Paris, she was already back in the session records. "The seventh school. The eastern district annex. I have arranged the space."

"Good."

"First session in ten days."

"Good."

She looked at him.

"He will co back," she said.

Not a certainty. A statent of intention — the kind people made to hold a thing in place.

"Yes," he said.

She turned back to the records.

He walked back to the supply office and sat at the table.

He did not pick up the coastal watch report. He did not pick up the timber correspondence. He sat for a while with his hands on the table.

’Paris is going. The thread will be pulled. The weight exists with or without him.’

’Cassandra said: a real possibility.’

’I have been building a wall for two years and Cassandra is telling there is a door in it sowhere in the west that I have not seen yet.’

’Paris is going to look for the door.’

’Build the frawork. Be present. Do not prevent.’

He picked up the stylus.

He started the frawork for Paris’s western journey.

He picked up his shard.
