"Hold position," Henrik ordered. "Let your eyes adjust and essence senses acclimate. Dungeons have higher ambient essence than surface environnts. It affects perception."

Kai expanded his essence sense carefully, feeling the chamber’s dinsions and the three passage entrances. The concentration of ambient essence was indeed higher although not dangerously so, but enough to create a subtle pressure against his awareness.

Lin stood nearby, her water orb floating above her palm. The light caught in her red hair, making it shimr with blue-tinted highlights. She was breathing carefully, clearly working to control nervousness.

"Formation check," Ben called. "Sound off!"

Each student confird their position. The formation was solid—combat specialists at front and rear, support protected in the middle, scouts ready to range ahead.

"Left passage, standard advancent," Henrik ordered. "Scouts, twenty feet ahead. Combat front, maintain spacing. Support, keep those lights steady. Move out."

The formation advanced into the left passage. The tunnel was carved from natural stone, roughly twelve feet wide and eight feet high. Essence crystals grew sporadically from the walls, providing minimal ambient light that the support mages’ orbs supplented.

After about a hundred feet, the passage widened into a smaller chamber. Kai’s essence sense detected movent imdiately—small, rapid signatures scurrying through the shadows.

"Contact," one of the scouts called quietly. "Essence rats, maybe a dozen."

The creatures erged into the light—rat-like monsters the size of small dogs, their fur crackling with ambient essence. Red eyes glead in the darkness and elongated teeth clicked together with sharp sounds.

"Combat front, engage at will," Ben commanded. "Support, be ready for stragglers."

Derek moved forward first, his practice sword igniting with fire essence. He brought it down in a heavy overhead chop that caught the nearest essence rat mid-leap. The creature squealed and dissolved into dissipating essence particles.

Roland stepped up beside Derek, his movents more defensive. An essence rat lunged at his leg and he blocked with his sword, then countered with a quick thrust that eliminated the creature efficiently.

The chamber erupted into brief chaos as essence rats attacked from multiple directions. Combat specialists handled most of them, but a few slipped through toward the middle formation.

Lin reacted imdiately, her hands moving in practiced patterns. Water essence ford into sharp icicles that shot forward, impaling two rats before they could reach the support section. The frozen creatures shattered into essence fragnts.

Another rat leaped toward Kai from the left. He sidestepped smoothly, his sword coming around in a precise arc that bisected the creature mid-air. It dissolved before hitting the ground.

The entire encounter lasted maybe thirty seconds. When it ended, essence particles drifted through the chamber like luminescent snow before fading completely.

"Clear," the scouts confird after checking the surrounding area.

"Well done," Henrik said. "Clean engagent, proper formation maintenance. That’s exactly how it should work."

The team advanced deeper into the passage, encountering two more essence rat groups. Each engagent went smoothly, students settling into their roles with increasing confidence.

After the third encounter, they reached a larger chamber that Henrik identified as a safe zone—an area where monsters didn’t naturally spawn and the essence concentration was stable enough for camping.

"We’ll establish base here," Henrik announced. "Set up tents, prepare dinner, post watches. Tomorrow we push deeper and tackle more challenging encounters."

Students moved to their assigned tasks with practiced efficiency. Kai helped Roland and Thomas set up their tent in a defensible corner of the chamber while Derek worked on the opposite side, still maintaining his distance.

Lin appeared while Kai was organizing his gear inside the tent. "That went well. The rat encounters, I an. Everyone perford solidly."

"It was basic combat. The real test cos deeper."

"Always so optimistic," she said with a slight smile. "Do you ever just... enjoy the mont? Appreciate that things went well?"

"I’m appreciating it adequately."

Lin laughed quietly. "You and that word." She hesitated, then spoke more carefully. "Would you want to partner up tomorrow? For the deeper exploration? I work well with balanced fighters, and you’re... well, you’re very good at what you do."

Kai considered that. Lin was competent, observant, and didn’t ask unnecessary questions. As partners went, she’d be reasonable.

"Sure."

"Great!" Her smile widened. "I’ll let Ben know when he’s assigning partnerships for tomorrow." She started to leave, then turned back. "And Kai? I’m glad you’re on this expedition. Makes feel safer knowing soone that skilled is watching our backs."

She walked away before he could respond, returning to help with dinner preparations.

Seraphina appeared monts later, dropping down to sit beside Kai with an amused expression.

"Lin likes you," she said without preamble.

"She asked to partner for exploration tomorrow."

"I ant she likes you romantically, not tactically." Seraphina grinned. "The way she looks at you, how she keeps finding excuses to talk to you, the blushing when you respond. Pretty obvious."

"I hadn’t noticed."

"Of course you hadn’t. You’re oblivious about anything that isn’t combat or survival related." Seraphina stretched. "Fair warning—Derek’s going to be even more hostile if he realizes Lin’s interested in you. He’s had a thing for her since last year."

"That’s not my problem."

"No, but it might beco your problem if he decides to make it one." She stood up. "Just be aware. Dungeon expeditions will get complicated when romantic tension enters the mix."

She wandered off to join her own tent group, leaving Kai to consider whether this expedition was going to be more complicated than anticipated.

Dinner was communal, the team gathering around a central fire that one of the support mages maintained with controlled fla essence. The mood was relaxed—first encounters had gone well, everyone was settling into dungeon routine.

Lin ended up sitting near Kai during the al, asking questions about combat techniques and essence manipulation that were probably more excuse for conversation than genuine inquiry. Kai answered concisely while noticing Derek glaring from across the fire.

After dinner, Henrik assigned watch rotations. Kai drew middle watch which ant he could sleep for a few hours first.

He settled into his bedroll while the tent’s other occupants prepared for sleep. Derek was already turned away, radiating hostility even in silence. Roland and Thomas chatted quietly about tomorrow’s planned route.

Kai closed his eyes and let his essence sense extend passively through the chamber, monitoring the camp periter while drifting into light sleep.

Tomorrow they’d push deeper into Thornvale Ruins. Tomorrow the real challenges would begin.

And apparently, tomorrow he would have Lin as a partner while Derek watched with increasing resentnt.
