William worked through coordination drills with Thomas, who was tentative at first and then, gradually, less tentative — the specific recovery of soone whose body rembered how to do sothing even while their mind was still managing the mory of why they’d stopped trusting it.

By the end of the two hours, Thomas had run three full coordination sequences without hesitation.

"Better," Seraphina told him, with the specific quality of soone whose assessnts were accurate enough that "better" carried real weight.

"It felt better," Thomas said. "Less like managing sothing and more like just — doing it."

"That’s the actual recovery," Sara said, from nearby. "Not when the bad mory goes away. When it stops being the loudest thing in the room."

Thomas looked at her.

"I’ve been reading," Sara said, slightly self-conscious. "About this. Since the expedition. I wanted to understand it properly."

"Thank you," Thomas said. Simply.

The session ended at five. Henrik had observed the last forty minutes from the side of the training hall, standing rather than seated, his cast-free arm crossed with his other arm in a way that suggested he was monitoring his own impulse to participate.

"Well?" Seraphina asked him, as the group dispersed.

"Good," Henrik said. "Genuinely good. The communication frawork especially — that’s not sothing I’ve seen built this systematically at student level before." He paused. "I want to run a session myself. Friday."

Sara, gathering her things nearby, looked over with the specific expression of soone who had just lost a bet and was bearing it with grace.

"Two days," she said to Liam.

"I told you," Liam said, with the magnanimous quality of soone who had won and was choosing not to gloat excessively. "Dessert tonight?"

"Dessert tonight," Sara agreed.

---

That evening, William received the pulse from his crystal that he had been waiting for.

Two pulses. Urgent.

He activated it in his room, Kai present and listening — Kai, who had spent the past two days quietly preparing, morizing the research history Sera had constructed for him, a cultivation scholar’s credentials built around interest in pre-systematization essence-script collections, the kind of detail-perfect cover that Sera Vane apparently produced as a matter of professional habit.

His mother’s voice.

*William. The request has been approved. Lady Varen has agreed to her daughter’s archive review, effective Friday. The window opens Friday morning and closes Sunday evening — the steward who holds the key will be present for those three days only, after which the archive is sealed again for the season.*

*Sera has finalized the cover identity for Kai. The invitation from Lady Varen will arrive Thursday evening — tonight — through the academy’s correspondence system, addressed to a "visiting scholar" whose na and credentials Sera has already established in the relevant academic records. Kai will need to travel to the Varen estate Friday morning. It’s a half-day journey by carriage from the academy — Sera has arranged transport that won’t connect to the academy directly.*

A pause.

*I want to say sothing else, and I want both of you to hear it.*

*This is the piece that, if it works, closes the structural gap in the inquiry. It also ans that by Sunday evening, the third principal will be confird, and the legal chanism will move against all three simultaneously. That includes your father, William. The tiline I described to you — the inquiry working through its own pace — that pace is about to change. Significantly.*

*I don’t know exactly what the next two weeks look like. I know it will be faster than either of us expected, and I know it will be public in ways that the current inquiry hasn’t been. Your na will be associated with this. Not as soone under investigation — as soone whose family is. That’s a different thing, but it’s not nothing, and the academy environnt may reflect that once it becos known.*

*I wanted you to have ti to think about that before it arrives. Whatever you need from when it does — tell , and I’ll do it.*

*Be careful. Both of you.*

The crystal went dark.

William sat with it for a mont.

"Friday," Kai said.

"Friday."

"I should pack tonight." Kai’s voice was steady, the specific calm of soone who had operated in far higher-stakes contexts than a half-day carriage journey to retrieve docunts from an estate archive. "The cover identity needs to feel lived-in by the ti I arrive. I’ll review the research history again before sleep."

William nodded, but his mind was on the other part of the ssage.

*Your na will be associated with this.*

He thought about what that ant, practically. The academy’s social fabric — the gossip networks, the observation that Jessica Harrow conducted with her notebooks, the general awareness that flowed through dining halls and common rooms and study groups. He thought about Patricia’s group, and Marcus’s group, and all the students who had spent the past week processing Derek’s betrayal and the Hollow Court and the expedition.

He thought about what it would an for those sa networks to process *Duke Aldric Cross, under formal investigation, nad principal in a multi-region criminal network.*

He thought about Liam, and Mira, and the dinner table, and what it would an for them to learn this not from him but from whatever version of it the academy’s gossip produced first.

"I need to tell them," he said.

Kai looked at him.

"Not everyone," William said. "But — Liam. Mira. Sara, Marcus. Before it becos public. They should hear it from ."

"That’s the right instinct," Kai said. "Though there’s a timing question. If you tell them before Sunday, and the information moves through the social network faster than you expect—"

"It could reach Isolde’s family before the window closes," William said. He thought about this. "Or it could reach whoever’s monitoring for exactly this kind of signal."

"Yes."

William sat with the competing considerations. The people who mattered to him, deserving to hear sothing significant from him rather than from rumor. And the operation, which required silence until Sunday evening.

"Sunday night," he said. "After the window closes. Before it’s public through any official channel — I tell the people who need to hear it directly from , the sa evening the access window closes, regardless of what’s happening with the inquiry’s announcent tiline."

"That’s reasonable," Kai said. "Three days from now."

"Three days," William agreed.

He looked at the ssage crystal, dark now, holding his mother’s voice and the things she had said and the things underneath what she had said — that she was about to set in motion sothing that would change his life in a way that the past two weeks, eventful as they had been, had not yet done. The competition, the Hollow Court, even the briefings — all of it had been preparation, in a sense, for this. The actual confrontation with what his family was, arriving not as abstraction but as public fact.

He thought about Seraphine, in the garden, asking him to co back.

He thought about his mother, reviewing docunts by candlelight.

He thought about what she’d said: *whatever you need from when it arrives, tell , and I’ll do it.*

He didn’t know yet what he would need. He suspected he wouldn’t know until it arrived.

But he knew what he had now, which was three days, and a team that had just spent two hours building sothing genuinely good together, and a friend across the room quietly morizing a cover identity so he could travel to an estate and copy docunts that would help bring down a network that included William’s own father.

"Kai," he said.

Kai looked up from the research history he’d begun reviewing.

"Be careful," William said. "Actually careful. Not just operationally."

Kai was quiet for a mont.

"I will," he said. "I have seventeen loops of reasons to be careful, and for the first ti, people I’d actually mind leaving behind." He returned to the docunts. "I’ll co back, William."

"I know," William said.

He believed it.

Outside, the evening settled over the academy — Thursday becoming Friday, the expanded training group’s first session already part of the accumulated texture of the year, Henrik planning his Friday session, Sara and Liam sowhere getting dessert on a bet that had resolved exactly as predicted.

Three days.
