The Hidden Leaf Village.
Koharu Utatane stood before the door of Kushina Uzumaki's apartnt, her hand hovering before she gave a soft, rhythmic knock.
"Coming! Just a second!" a vibrant, energetic voice called out.
The door swung open, and Kushina Uzumaki appeared, looking slightly disheveled. She blinked in surprise. "Oh! Elder Koharu?"
"Hello, Kushina."
"I've co on behalf of Lord Hiruzen to check on you. May I co in for a mont?" Koharu asked with a gentle, grandmotherly smile. It wasn't entirely natural for her.
Before coming here, Hiruzen had summoned her to the office. They had discussed the upcoming "Bio-Ninjutsu" projects and the negotiations with the Land of Fire, but the core of the eting was how to handle the village's Jinchuriki.
Koharu, like the old Hiruzen, had spent years viewing shinobi—especially Jinchuriki—as tools. It was a philosophy that prevented friction and ensured the village survived the brutal Warring States period. She had even suggested that an official apology was unnecessary; that they should just "quietly fix the security flaws" and move on.
Hiruzen had shredded that idea instantly.
"Koharu, you think showing warmth will make our shinobi soft. I don't deny that it brings its own set of complications," Hiruzen had said, his voice echoing in the Hokage's office. "But the path you're on—denying their humanity—will eventually cause this village to implode."
"We are going to bend our backs for a mont. We are going to satisfy their emotional needs. And then, we are going to broadcast that compassion to the entire Ninja World."
"I'm willing to bet that the Will of Fire, used correctly, can make our enemies defect to us just to feel the sun on their faces."
"True authority is building a consensus that the village is a ho, not just a fortress. Don't be so short-sighted."
Being lectured like a Genin by her old teammate had been a shock to Koharu's system. But once she processed the cold, tactical logic behind "sincerity," she realized she had her orders.
"Please, co in! I... I haven't really tidied up yet, I'm so sorry!" Kushina flustered, her vibrant red hair twitching with her nerves.
"It's no trouble at all, dear. It's normal for young people to be a little ssy," Koharu said, channelling the "Compassionate Elder" persona Hiruzen had demanded.
As she stepped inside, Koharu's eyebrows shot up.
There was a blonde boy sitting on the floor. Minato Namikaze was barefoot, sitting cross-legged on the sofa, his eyes glued to a chaotic spread of blueprints and scrolls on the coffee table.
Are those... sealing formulas?
Koharu's instinctive suspicion flared. Who allowed this boy to have such close contact with the Nine-Tails vessel? Is he fishing for Uzumaki secrets?
Kushina didn't notice the change in Koharu's expression. She was too busy turning a bright shade of red. "Ah! I forgot Minato was here!" she squeaked, a classic reaction of a teenage girl caught with a boy in her house.
Minato, however, was as sharp as ever. He stood up instantly, bowing respectfully. "Good afternoon, Elder Koharu."
"Minato," Koharu nodded, her eyes scanning him. She wasn't out to break up a budding romance, but Kushina's status as a Jinchuriki made every friendship a matter of national security. Even if Minato was Jiraiya's student, he was still an "outsider."
"Grand-Sensei is very worried about you, Kushina," Minato said, flashing a sunny, warm smile. "You've been getting a lot of visitors today!"
Kushina huffed playfully. "Oh? So you only ca because the Hokage told you to?"
Minato raised his hands in mock surrender. "Not at all. Grand-Sensei just ntioned how glad he was that we were close. He said he finds it 'heartwarming.'"
Koharu's eyes narrowed slightly. This blonde brat is sothing else.
In two sentences, Minato had established his identity, subtly reminded Koharu that he had the Hokage's personal blessing to be here, and maintained the image of a pure, sunny-hearted teenager.
Is this really Jiraiya's student? Koharu wondered. He reminds more of a young Orochimaru... but with a much better PR team.
"So Minato is helping you study?" Koharu asked, her tone softening. "Seeing the youth working together... it makes feel young again."
Kushina, still blushing, rushed to the kitchen to bring out tea and snacks.
"What are you two working on?" Koharu asked, gesturing to the table.
"Elder, maybe you could help us?" Minato said, scratching the back of his head with an embarrassed grin. "Grand-Sensei asked to 'stress-test' Lord Sakumo's new security net. I thought so advanced Barrier Sealing might help, so Kushina and I are brainstorming."
Koharu felt a pang of nostalgia. These kids were working for the village's future, just as she once had. "Let see. Perhaps I can offer so guidance."
A few minutes later, Koharu looked up, her face a mask of polite confusion.
She had intended to offer "senior guidance" to build rapport, but the sealing formulas these two were discussing were far beyond "basic." Even as an elder, she found the complexity of the Uzumaki scripts difficult to grasp in one sitting.
She gave a few general pointers—sound enough, but she felt like she was out of her depth.
Minato let out a small gasp of realization. "Thank you, Elder! That one point about the chakra-flow... I think I've got it!"
Koharu blinked. Did he really figure it out? I haven't even figured it out!
Kushina's eyes turned into stars. "Wow! Elder Koharu is so smart! And Minato is so fast!"
Koharu felt a surge of relief. Whether Minato was truly a genius or just exceptionally good at making people feel important, it didn't matter. He was a perfect anchor for Kushina.
It was ti for the "Real Mission."
"Kushina," Koharu said, her voice becoming solemn. "The village will ensure that those Cloud shinobi pay for what they did. We failed you, dear. The security was lax, and for that, you have our deepest apologies."
"But don't think for a second that the village has forgotten you. We were simply overwheld by the post-war reconstruction and the movents of enemy nations. Lord Hiruzen has personally issued a new mandate."
"The history of the Uzumaki-Konoha alliance will be added to the Academy curriculum. We want every child to know the debt we owe your clan, and we want them to rember the cruelty of our enemies."
"The Hokage asked to tell you this: Konoha is your ho. You are not a 'vessel' or a 'tool.' Even if you didn't have your unique chakra, this village has a blood-oath to protect every survivor of the Whirlpool."
"You may choose any estate in the village to be your new ho. The Anbu will be stationed nearby—not to watch you, but to protect you. And since your status prevents you from taking common missions, the village is providing you with a lifeti stipend of training resources and living expenses."
"If you ever need anything, anything at all, you tell us. Don't bottle it up," Koharu said firmly. "Lord Hiruzen wants you to be happy here. He wants you to find a family."
Kushina's head dropped. Tears began to splash onto the table. "Thank you... thank you, Elder. Thank you, Lord Hiruzen!"
"The village has always been on your side, Kushina," Minato whispered, sitting beside her and gently patting her hand.
"I'll leave you two to your studies," Koharu said, standing up and heading for the door.
Once outside, Koharu looked up at the clear blue sky. She felt a strange, light sensation in her chest.
Hiruzen was right. When did I start believing that ninjas were just tools? she wondered.
A village was supposed to be a place that protects its own. And for the first ti in years, she felt like she was actually doing her job.
On the other side of the village...
Sakumo Hatake was looking over the new security maps, but his mind was on the upcoming eting. He had a specific request for a certain clan leader.
"It's ti to talk to Fugaku Uchiha."
