"Dumbledore! Are you ho?" Kane knocked on the door and received an imdiate response.
"Co in."
Kane walked in with his walking cane in hand, finding Dumbledore looking a bit under the weather, dabbing his nose with a tissue.
"Ah, Kane. Is there sothing else?" Dumbledore asked after one final blow of his nose.
"I want to learn how to make a broomstick. I want to build one myself," Kane said, placing the walking cane—which was nearly as tall as he was—onto Dumbledore's desk. "Using this as the core."
He then pulled out a chair and leaned back comfortably.
"Mhm. This... the acceleration ability of this cane isn't from a magical circuit. Rather, the cane itself is condensed from a type of speed-based magic or rule. Quite remarkable," Dumbledore noted, picking up the cane to examine it closely.
"So, is it possible?" Kane raised an eyebrow. "I only need the basic principles of a broomstick. I'll handle the actual construction myself. I believe my hands-on skills are quite decent."
"Mhm. Anyone who can scavenge trash around Hogwarts and build a portal that large... if they said your hands-on skills were poor, I would strongly disagree." Dumbledore smiled and stood up to rummage through his bookshelves.
He had been young once, too. Back then, he had also tried to piece together a broomstick that was entirely his own.
Just as seventeen or eighteen-year-olds today love motorcycles, his designs might seem a bit dated by modern standards, but the general logic was solid. After all, those were ideas he had exchanged via letters with Nicolas Flal.
Soon, he pulled two pages clipped together from a notebook—his original design for a broomstick. Thinking back on it brought a wave of nostalgia.
At the ti, he had planned to add two sidecars to the broom once it was finished, with room for another person on the back. Then, with Gellert on the left, Aberforth on the right, and Ariana in the back, the four of them would have toured all of England.
Young people's ideas are always so imaginative, seasoned with a touch of naivety—wanting everything, only to end up with nothing.
Dumbledore stared at the few pages of blueprints, frozen for a few seconds. With a sigh, he removed the pages concerning the sidecars and the back seat, handing only the main chassis design to Kane.
"Though so of the designs are a bit old-fashioned, the basic principles are sound. In fact, because this is a custom DIY build, so of the core chanics are actually superior to the recently released Nimbus 2001."
Kane took the blueprints and skimd through them. Mhm. Although it was filled with magical circuits and alchemical knowledge, to his surprise, he could actually understand a fair bit of it.
After stuffing the blueprints and the walking cane into Little Pumpkin's belly, he was about to leave when he suddenly turned back. "Is Harry required to stay at the Dursleys' for the whole sumr because of the magic? What's the minimum stay?"
Dumbledore smiled. "Perhaps a month."
"Got it. Thirty-one days." Kane left the Headmaster's office. It was Saturday, no classes—the perfect ti to find a spot and figure out how to hand-craft this broom.
The Library...
Hermione was busy cramming for the upcoming finals, tirelessly working through practice problems. When Kane sat down next to her, curiosity got the better of her and she stole a glance.
Mhm... broomstick blueprints. Looks like a custom model.
She could understand it. In the Muggle world, plenty of wealthy young heirs liked to DIY motorcycles or sports cars—so even perford the abstract "performance art" of using gold for brake pads.
Don't look, don't look. If I don't look, my focus won't be broken.
Just as Hermione was studying hard, Kane was deep into his research.
Aside from the main body—the walking cane—he needed a power source: either Mana Stones or a magic interface. He chose to draw a runic circuit that would directly tap into a wizard's own magic. After all, if Kane had anything in abundance, it was mana.
Then there was the flight capability. Standard broomsticks required feathers from powerful magical birds.
As a "poor orphan student," Kane didn't have access to such high-end resources. He figured he'd just ask Dumbledore for so Phoenix feathers to make do.
Finally, there was the control sche. He'd ask Hagrid if he had any suitable animal horns. Rather than a standard broom handle, Kane preferred sothing like bicycle or motorcycle handlebars.
Oh, and the most important part: the brush. He could just go to the Forbidden Forest to pull so grass. For other parts, he'd "borrow" so wood from a couple of Tree Ents in the Forest.
On the other side, Hermione... Emmm...
Despite her best efforts not to let the "Celestial Noble's" antics distract her, she was still curious. When most students were bragging about having a Nimbus or a Cleansweep, her friend was researching how to hand-craft a one-of-a-kind broom. Anyone would be curious.
Just as she decided to ask Kane about his progress...
"Where did he go?" Hermione looked in surprise at the empty seat next to her.
"This guy is getting more like a ghost every day. He walks without making a sound," she grumbled helplessly.
Dumbledore hadn't even decided which bakery to order dessert from when Kane reappeared.
"Dumbledore~" Kane said with a grin.
Dumbledore, having built a broom himself, knew exactly what Kane wanted. He opened a drawer and counted out twelve Phoenix feathers. "A Y12 broom core. Not even a Nimbus 2001 is faster. Of course, it all depends on your craftsmanship."
"Thanks! I need to head over to Hagrid's now, so I won't bother you further." Kane took the feathers and bolted, wasting no ti.
Soon, Hagrid, who was busy giving his pet "Nut" a bath, welcod Hogwarts' most famous beggar of the day.
"Hagrid, do you have any horns or anything that would work as handlebars for a broom?" Kane called out from a distance.
"How about Thunderbird talons? One for the left, one for the right—perfect handles. Though I don't know why you want that style; if you're not careful, it'll be prone to swerving and slipping, and you'll get tossed right off," Hagrid said.
He ducked into his hut and brought out two thirty-centiter-long talons. They were smooth with a slight curve, a hint of azure lightning hidden within their pitch-black surface.
As Kane listened to Hagrid's explanation, he translated the warnings in his head:
Unstable handling = Rear-wheel drive. Prone to swerving and slipping = Drifting.
Who said that was bad? That was perfect.
After stuffing everything into Little Pumpkin, Kane decided this would be his final trip to the Forbidden Forest for the term.
He wasn't there to pick on the poor spiders this ti; he was there for so minor but indelible deforestation. Well, not quite—he'd plant a few saplings after he was done with the Tree Ents.
Soon, the forest's vegetation count went: N - 2 3 3 3...
From that day until the End-of-Term Feast a week later, whenever Kane had a spare mont, he was either carving runes or consulting professors about them.
Finally, just before the feast, he completed his hand-crafted broomstick.
It featured a non-aerodynamic exterior paired with a high-output "Y12" core, a seat cushioned with Living Wood, and Thunderbird talon handlebars. It was enough to make any Animal or Plant Protection Association scream in horror.
The only "soft" part was the tail made of forest grass. When Kane carried it on his back, the tail bobbed like a ponytail with every step he took.
The other students didn't say much. The school's most famous cross-dresser adding another weird accessory? No one was surprised.
The only real feedback ca the next day by the Black Lake. Dumbledore watched Kane, who was preparing for takeoff, and said hollowly, "Traveling alone on a broom... it's a bit unreliable."
"So?" Kane wondered what sche the Headmaster was cooking up now.
"I'm considering whether it's necessary to assign you a... travel buddy?" Dumbledore rubbed his chin, floating a rather suspicious suggestion.
