Chapter 52: Chapter 52 Husband, Is This Okay?
“Brother-in-law!”
Before entering the house, Daisy ran up to Chen Jie with arms outstretched and claws bared, ready to embrace him.
Chen Jie smiled as well, saying to Daisy, “Missed your brother-in-law?”
“Missed you!”
“Really? You’re not lying to your brother-in-law, are you?”
“Lying is for little dogs!”
Daisy firmly declared.
“Alright, I believe you.”
Chen Jie said with a smile, then looked up and saw Su Yunjin standing at the door, freshly done with her chores, her hair slightly disheveled and beads of sweat on her forehead, which he wiped away with his hand.
“Your husband’s back.”
She tenderly told her husband.
Chen Jie smiled and said, “Hmm.”
“Why did you buy so much stuff again?”
“Went to town, saw what the house needed, and bought so things.”
The three of them walked into the house, beginning to move the items inside, Chen Jie noticing Su Yunjin’s sweat and the hoe in the yard, said, “Have you been doing chores at ho?”
“The yard’s idle as it is, I thought of turning it over, will buy so vegetable seeds later, plant so veggies, that should feed our family.”
Chen Jie responded, “That sounds good, just don’t overdo it.”
Su Yunjin thought for a mont then said, “Husband, I—I want you to take to town.”
“Oh? What for?”
“I want to sell a few chicks and ducks. We’ll raise them, and then we’ll have eggs and duck eggs to eat.”
“Alright, I’ll take you to town tomorrow after I get back.”
“Brother-in-law, I want to go too.”
“Sure, I’ll take you too.”
“Thank you, brother-in-law.”
Saying this, they entered the house, and Su Yunjin poured a glass of water for Chen Jie, who was truly thirsty and drank it down in one go.
Then Chen Jie took out the at buns and roasted chicken he had bought today.
Seeing the food, Daisy’s eyes nearly popped out, she hugged Chen Jie, “Thank you, brother-in-law, you’re the best.”
Chen Jie jokingly said, “So, if I didn’t buy you tasty food, I wouldn’t be good?”
Daisy hesitated.
After a long ti, she reluctantly said, “That’s, that’s alright I guess.”
“You little ingrate.”
Chen Jie flicked Daisy’s nose, and she laughed carelessly.
Su Yunjin remarked from the side, “Husband, don’t keep spoiling her. She’s getting picky, soon she’ll even complain about sorghum rice.”
Daisy quickly said, “Sister’s talking nonsense. Ruirui loves sorghum rice the most.”
Chen Jie said, “Well, since Ruirui loves sorghum rice that much, wife, make a pot of sorghum rice for Ruirui to eat. We’ll eat the roasted chicken and at buns.”
“Ah, no!”
Daisy shouted urgently.
Chen Jie teased her, “What’s wrong with that? You said it yourself, you love sorghum rice the most. So, the at buns and roasted chicken are for your sister and your brother-in-law.”
“Actually, actually Ruirui doesn’t like sorghum rice that much.”
Daisy weakly said, then looking up at Chen Jie with big, blinking eyes, she added, “Just give Ruirui one at bun, brother-in-law… Ruirui promises not to eat too much.”
Daisy extended her hand as if taking an oath.
Chen Jie laughed.
Su Yunjin laughed as well.

At dinner, the three of them had a joyous al. After dinner, Chen Jie took out two sets of new clothes from a cloth bag nearby.
“Wife, Ruirui, co over here.”
Hearing the call, Su Yunjin wiped her hands on a dishcloth, and Ruirui too ca to the outer room, just in ti to see the clothes in Chen Jie’s hands.
“Wow, new clothes!”
Daisy cheered and rushed over.
A look of surprise appeared on Su Yunjin’s face, though it quickly faded.
“Wife, co here, see if you like it.”
Chen Jie smiled at Su Yunjin.
“Husband, I don’t even go out much, why are you buying new clothes? We’re not well-off right now…”
Su Yunjin caressed the fabric of the clothes, unable to let go, yet her lips uttered ‘complaints’.
“Do you like it?” Jie asked.
“It must be expensive,” Yunjin retorted, to which Jie replied, “Expensive or not isn’t important, do you like it?”
“Of course I like it! Sister, sister, do you think I’ll look pretty in this dress?”
Daisy held up the new dress against herself and twirled around on the spot.
“Stop twirling, you’ll get the dress dirty,” Yunjin said.
Daisy stopped and excitedly hugged Chen Jie, giving him a kiss, “Thank you, brother-in-law!”
Jie laughed, “Good, Ruirui knows how to be grateful, unlike so people… Don’t they have anything to say?”
Daisy glanced expectantly at her sister.
With both the young and older pair of eyes staring at her, Yunjin’s face turned red instantly, and she ran off with the clothes to the inner room.
“Hey, are you just running off like that?” Jie called after her.
Yunjin didn’t answer.
Jie then turned to Daisy saying, “Let’s not follow your sister’s example. She’s not very courteous, is she!”
“Brother-in-law, what do you an by ‘courteous’?” Daisy asked wisely.
Jie thought for a mont and replied, “Being discourteous is like not knowing how to behave. For example, if your brother-in-law buys you new clothes, and you are happy and kiss him, that’s right, isn’t it?”
“Mm-hmm.”
“And I bought your sister new clothes too, shouldn’t she also give your brother-in-law a kiss?”
“Mm-hmm, right!”
“But she didn’t keep her promise and ran off. Isn’t she being discourteous by not doing so?”
“Mm-hmm, you’re right brother-in-law. She’s really not courteous!”
Daisy nodded earnestly and then kissed Chen Jie again, proudly stating, “Brother-in-law, Ruirui is courteous, right?”
“Mm, very courteous. You’re way too courteous,” Jie said with a laugh, then pointing towards the inner room, he said, “You go tell your sister to put on the new clothes and co out to show . How about I buy you candied haws tomorrow?”
“Really?” Daisy’s eyes widened with excitent.
Jie laughed, “Have I ever lied to you?”
After thinking for a mont, Daisy replied, “The bad brother-in-law lied before, but the good brother-in-law never lied.”
“Then will you go?”
Jie asked, and after thinking again, Daisy said, “I’ll go, for candied haws!”
“Right, for candied haws!” Daisy looked at Chen Jie and said, “Okay, I’ll go then.”
Daisy ran into the room but soon Yunjin’s voice could be heard from inside.
“No, Ruirui, we haven’t bathed in a long ti. Let’s bathe tomorrow after your brother-in-law leaves, and then we can wear the new clothes. Do you understand? If we wear them now, they’ll get dirty.”
“Oh, but brother-in-law promised to buy candied haws.”
“Okay, you little thing, you sold out your sister for a candied haw.”
“It’s not sister, then you tell Ruirui, aren’t you happy that brother-in-law bought you new clothes?”
After a brief silence, Yunjin seed to say sothing that couldn’t be clearly heard by Jie from outside, but then Daisy’s voice exclaid from inside.
“Sister, if you like it why don’t you kiss my brother-in-law? You like this, this is so discourteous!” Daisy lanted heartily while Yunjin was caught between laughter and tears, and Jie was smiling knowingly—Daisy had successfully ‘brainwashed’ her.
Soon Yunjin, unable to escape Daisy’s nagging, ca out to find Chen Jie pouring water into a pot to heat.
“Husband, what are you doing?” she asked.
Jie replied, “Oh, my master gave a dicinal bath recipe to help with my training; I’m heating so water.”
“Oh, let do that,” Yunjin said, taking the scoop from his hand. As she approached him, she suddenly kissed him.
Jie looked at his wife in surprise.
Yunjin’s cheeks were flushed as she shyly yet boldly said, “This way that little girl won’t keep saying I’m not courteous…”
“Husband, am I being courteous now?”
