Chapter 1193: Story 1193: The Cathedral Turns
In the heart of Dreadmoor, the cathedral that once stood as a relic of faith had begun to move.
It started subtly—barely a quiver in the stained-glass saints, a murmur in the blackened bells. But beneath its stone bones, sothing ancient stirred, sothing that predated prayer. The townsfolk awoke to a low grinding sound, like mountains weeping. They stepped outside and looked toward the skyline, where the old cathedral now tilted, like a ship caught in storm-surge.
And then it turned.
Not toppled. Not collapsed.
It pivoted, slowly and deliberately, on its own foundation, like an eye locking onto its prey.
Inside the crypts, Evelyn Blackmoor gasped as the walls realigned, corridors slithering into new shapes. The tombs she had mapped ticulously were now inverted, nas rewritten in a dead language no living tongue could speak. Candles flickered to life on their own, casting inverted shadows that sank upward.
The stained glass above now displayed visions of the future—blood rituals yet to be perford, deaths yet to happen, cities that hadn’t yet burned.
In one panel, Evelyn saw herself, kneeling in fire, offering her own tongue to a faceless deity.
In another, the Hollow One opened His arms wide, the sky behind Him broken like glass.
The choir stalls scread.
Not sang—scread.
Dozens of spectral figures hovered there now, mouths sewn shut with rosary wire, eyes gouged out and replaced with glimring teeth. They swayed in unison, making no sound, yet the air trembled with their despair.
At the altar, the Ash Prophet stood with arms outstretched. “The bones of this house rember the first shape,” he chanted. “We only ever built around it.”
With a sound like a thunderclap underwater, the entire cathedral rotated again, aligning with sothing invisible in the sky.
In the streets, citizens dropped to their knees. So wept. So convulsed. So rely smiled, slack-jawed and dreaming. From every spire in the city, black banners unfurled—unseen until this mont—bearing the sigil of the One Who Waits in Hollow Light.
Clara Veil, now partially transford into sothing between girl and glyph, approached the cathedral with reverence. As she touched the gate, her fingers bled ink, and the door opened for her.
Inside, the cathedral was no longer a place of worship.
It was a machine.
Gears of bone turned behind the walls. Pews reshaped into rib-like arches. Holy water evaporated, replaced by a thin red mist. A new choir began to sing, and their words were not prayers—they were commands.
The Hollow One was rebuilding His throne.
And the cathedral, long dormant, was shifting to et His design.
As the moon still hung low and shattered in the sky, the earth trembled once more, and the entire city heard the impossible:
A heartbeat, echoing from the cathedral walls.
The Cathedral had turned.
And it was facing the Gate.
