Chapter 1196: Story 1196: Cracks in the World

The first crack was not seen, but heard—a sound like a sob swallowed by thunder, rippling through the spine of Dreadmoor. The gaslamps flickered in response, casting shadows that no longer obeyed the forms that birthed them.

In Mada Grin’s tavern, a glass shattered with no touch. Her mirror warped, splitting her reflection into a dozen mournful versions of herself. She touched the surface—and felt the breath of another world behind it.

“It’s begun,” she whispered, to no one, to everyone.

Far below, in the catacombs Jasper Crane once wandered, the walls wept blood.

He ran now—not in fear, but in recognition. The veins across the stone pulsed with a mory he had inherited unwillingly. They whispered old nas, godless rituals, and one phrase repeated again and again:

“There is no cage we did not build ourselves.”

At a crossroads deep beneath the Church of Lanterns, Jasper ca upon a tear in the air, as if the world’s skin had been peeled back. Through it: a vast and hollow place, where titanic figures of bone and ink slithered, singing songs in reverse.

He should have looked away.

He didn’t.

In the streets above, cracks spiderwebbed across the cobblestones, splitting the foundation of Dreadmoor into fragnts of ti. Streetlights blinked in and out of decades. A woman scread—and turned to dust mid-word, her echo lingering longer than her form.

Clara Veil danced in the market square, watched by ghosts and reflections. The performance was not hers—but sothing inside her knew the steps, as if she were reliving a dance from a past that never happened.

Above her, the sky groaned.

The moon cracked.

Not shattered, but peeled, layers flaking away like old bark, revealing sothing alive beneath.

An eye?

No. A maw.

Evelyn Blackmoor watched from the clocktower ruins as lines of reality curled like parchnt in fire. Streets bent upward into spirals. Windows looked out into oceans of screaming stars. People blinked—and were replaced by versions of themselves that shouldn’t exist.

And from the heart of it all, at the Cathedral-That-Turns, the King That Wasn’t raised his hands.

“Let the world rember what it tried to forget.”

The cracks widened.

Not just in streets, in walls, in sky—

—but in people.

Inside minds.

Inside mory.

At the edge of the Hollow Woods, the trees themselves groaned as bark split to reveal watching eyes. The Crone of the Woods stirred from her hovel, bones clicking as she whispered a final prophecy:

“The world cannot hold what it denied for so long.”

One final crack echoed across all realms.

The veil tore.

And through the rupture spilled sothing vast, sothing forgotten, sothing sacred and wrong.

Not a god.

Not a beast.

But Truth, unshackled.
