Chapter 1221: Story 1221: Welco to Virex

The air slled of rust and rot.

Lena stepped over a scorched sign that once read “VIREX BIO-RESEARCH CENTER – AUTHORIZED ENTRY ONLY.” Now, vines and soot had all but consud it. The building lood above them, its windows boarded, its steel doors wide open as if the building itself had given up fighting.

Ward flicked off the safety on his pistol.

WARD:

“Place went dark six months ago. No survivors reported. No retrieval. Just… silence.”

THE GIRL:

“Then why are we going in?”

LENA:

“Because Briggs is still burning up. And rumor says this place was working on sothing… pre-outbreak.”

Briggs stumbled, coughing blood. His skin was pale, sweat slicking his face despite the chill. He wasn’t going to last the night.

The halls of Virex were unnaturally quiet. The fluorescent lights buzzed erratically—so flickering, others shattered. As they moved deeper, Lena noticed sothing disturbing: symbols—painted in ash, scratched into glass, etched in dried blood. Circles. Spirals. Open eyes.

THE GIRL (whispering):

“Who lived here?”

They turned a corner and found candles—hundreds of them—burning in cracked jars lining a corridor like a vigil for the dead. In the center of the hallway sat a man, cross-legged, eyes closed, humming low.

Ward raised his pistol.

WARD:

“Don’t move.”

The man didn’t flinch. He was thin, gaunt, dressed in tattered lab scrubs. A Virex badge dangled from his neck, burned and scratched.

LENA:

“We’re looking for dicine. A cure. Anything.”

The man opened his eyes slowly. They were entirely black.

MAN (smiling):

“You’ve co to witness.”

WARD:

“Witness what?”

MAN:

“The rebirth. The marrow of life. You see the world dying. But here, we cultivate decay. We beco it.”

THE GIRL:

“Is there dicine or not?”

The man rose without effort. His smile didn’t fade.

MAN:

“What you seek is deeper. Lower levels. Behind the cold chamber. But beware… the serum changes more than just flesh.”

Before anyone could react, he backed away and lted into the darkness—vanishing behind a sliding panel in the wall.

LENA:

“That was a warning.”

They pressed forward, descending rusted stairs into the lower levels. The air grew thick. Spores floated lazily in beams of light slicing through cracks in the walls. On a nearby desk, a terminal blinked.

Ward tapped it. A ssage loaded:

“PROJECT: REGENESIS — Status: ABORTED.”

“Personnel evacuated or repurposed.”

They reached the cold chamber. Inside, racks of sealed vials—so broken, others untouched—lined the walls. At the far end, a small box glowed with a biohazard symbol and one word stenciled across it:

“CURE_13.”

Just as Lena reached for it, a scream echoed through the corridors. Not human. Not animal. Sothing in-between.

They turned.

The man was gone—but others now stood in the corridor behind them. Dozens. Eyes black. Skin cracked. Smiling.

THE GIRL (terrified):

“We shouldn’t have co here.”

WARD:

“Too late.”
