Chapter 1223: Story 1223: Eyes in the Forest
The forest surrounding Virex wasn’t marked on any map. No satellites. No na. Just an unnad green mass swallowing the old roads and fences whole.
They entered at dawn—Lena, Ward, and the girl. Behind them, Virex and its cult-choked corridors lay in smoldering ruin. Ahead, the forest lood like a cathedral of bone and bark.
LENA:
“We stay quiet. We follow the trail markers. We don’t stop.”
But there were no markers.
No birds. No wind.
Just trees, and watching eyes.
They moved for an hour in silence before the girl stopped cold, eyes wide.
THE GIRL:
“He’s watching us.”
WARD (gripping his rifle):
“Who?”
She pointed toward a massive tree hollow, its bark flaking in streaks of dried blood. Inside, glimring—sothing moved.
Ward approached, slow and careful. He peered in—
—and found a human eye.
It blinked.
He recoiled as the “tree” shuddered and retreated, rging into the forest’s shadows like a beast made of moss and bone.
WARD:
“What the hell was that?”
LENA:
“So kind of… sentry?”
They kept moving.
Every few steps, they found things—clumps of hair caught in branches. Symbols carved into bark that pulsed faintly. Stone cairns arranged into circles, always warm to the touch. Trees growing in spirals. Eyes embedded in trunks. Real eyes.
THE GIRL (murmuring):
“They call this place ‘The Sighted Grove.’ Where the faithful beco the forest.”
Ward checked their rear. Nothing but shifting light and silence.
Hours passed. The forest thickened, roots rising like ribs, moss hanging in veils. They ca upon a clearing—and the altar.
It was a tree, twisted into the shape of a spine, with ribs branching from its trunk. Around it, worshipers stood frozen, skin stretched thin, bark sprouting from their cheeks, eyes wide and unblinking. They did not move. They simply stared.
LENA (shaken):
“They’re alive…”
A soft hum began, low and tonal. One of the tree-people raised a gnarled hand and pointed directly at Lena.
A voice echoed, not from a speaker, but from within the trees themselves.
THE VOICE:
“You carry the vial. The false cure. The prophet seeks you.”
Roots erupted from the ground, lashing toward them.
WARD (firing):
“Run!”
The girl scread as a root caught her leg, but Lena cut it with her knife. They sprinted through thorns and vines as the forest seed to close behind them—trees twisting, moss hissing, bark whispering ancient prayers.
They didn’t stop until they crashed into a rusted chain-link fence deep in the woods, crowned with decades-old warning signs:
PROPERTY OF VIREX BIOSYSTEMS — SECTOR 7: TERMINATED
Beyond it, a watchtower leaned sideways, toppled by ti. They were out of the grove—but not safe.
Ward slumped against the fence, breathing hard.
WARD:
“Whatever that place was… it was watching us.”
Lena opened her jacket and looked at the vial. The liquid inside pulsed faintly—like it, too, was alive.
LENA (quietly):
“Eyes in the forest. Eyes in the cure. What the hell did they make?”
Behind them, the forest whispered her na.
