Now reading: Chapter 1429: Story 1429: The First Tendril from Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition, a Action novel by Sir Faraz.

It was cold.

Not the brittle, winter kind of cold, but a bone-deep emptiness that made fire itself seem aningless. The tendril slid through the air in slow, deliberate coils, its surface a slick black that swallowed light instead of reflecting it. Where it passed, the heat from the burning sky died instantly, leaving jagged halos of frost on the steel.

Mira’s fingers were still wrapped around the lever, but she couldn’t move. The tendril’s presence pressed on her mind like a tidal wave, every thought crumbling into static.

You have opened the wound, the tower whispered, its voice shaking with sothing like reverence. Now we bleed together.

Elena staggered forward, shoving Mira away from the console. “Snap out of it!” she hissed, but her words felt muffled, like they were underwater. The tendril brushed the side of the tower, and the tal scread—a sharp, resonant wail that sent chunks of rust and molten slag raining down into the plaza below.

The giant had stopped climbing. It raised its fused arms toward the sky, bowing, as though welcoming a god. The molten seams across its torso split wider, spilling rivers of red-hot fluid that hissed into steam the mont the cold from above touched them.

“Mira!” Elena’s voice tore through again, closer this ti. “We can still stop it! We just need to—”

Her words cut short as the tendril moved faster than sight. In one smooth lash, it wrapped around the giant. The thing didn’t resist. Instead, it shuddered—once—and its form began to unravel, breaking apart into streams of molten light that were sucked upward into the fissure.

The Choir below howled in unison, their song shattering into chaos. So fell to their knees, clawing at their heads, while others threw themselves toward the tower, driven mad by the absence of their leader.

The tendril lingered, its tip turning toward the console. Toward her.

Step closer, it murmured—not with words, but with a pull on every nerve in her body. You are chosen.

Mira’s knees buckled. Her vision swam with flashes of impossible landscapes—a city built from living bone, seas of black glass, skies filled with tendrils as far as she could see. And in every vision, she stood at the center.

Elena grabbed her arm and pulled hard. “Fight it! If you listen to it, you’re gone!”

The cables in the tower lashed out, seizing Elena and yanking her away. Her scream was ripped from her throat as they dragged her toward the base of the console.

Mira’s hand twitched toward the lever again—but this ti, the blackened tal felt alive, pulsing faintly beneath her touch.

Above, the fissures widened to the size of cathedrals, and more tendrils began to pour through, writhing hungrily toward the city.

The first one tightened around the tower. The steel began to buckle.

And Mira knew the choice was no longer about opening the gate.

It was about surviving what had already co through.
