Mara's heart raced as she traced the final sigil onto the cold stone floor. The room was dim, illuminated only by the flickering glow of crimson candles, their light casting long shadows on the walls. She knew this was a dangerous ritual. The ancient to had warned of the risks, of the power she sought to awaken, but desperation drove her forward.
Her village was dying. Crops withered, livestock vanished, and a malevolent sickness spread through the air. The elders had tried every known magic, every prayer to the gods, but nothing had worked. So, she had turned to the forbidden—the dark magic whispered of in ancient legends.
Baal'Zarath.
The na itself felt like a sin on her lips, but Mara had no other choice. She needed a power greater than any mortal could wield, and Baal'Zarath, the demon-lord of knowledge and chaos, was the only one who could grant it.
With the final mark complete, she stepped back, her hands trembling. At the center of the ritual circle, she placed a small, jet-black crystal, the heart of the summoning. The air grew thick, and a low hum began to vibrate through the room. Mara's breath caught in her throat as the ground beneath her feet shifted, dark tendrils of energy swirling around the circle.
A deep voice echoed in the chamber, like the rumble of distant thunder.
*"You dare summon , mortal?"*
In an instant, the space within the circle erupted with a flare of red light. Mara shielded her eyes as the ground trembled beneath her. When the light faded, a figure sat at the center of the circle. A creature with the form of a cat—sleek and black as night—but with eyes that blazed like twin suns. Horns curled majestically from its head, and a glowing symbol marked its brow.
Baal'Zarath.
The demon-cat gazed upon Mara with an unsettling intelligence, its tail flicking slowly, purposefully, as if it had all the ti in the world.
*"I have waited centuries for this,"* it purred, though the voice was no less terrifying for its softness. The ground around the circle seed to pulse with dark energy, the air crackling with tension.
Mara swallowed her fear, though her voice wavered as she spoke. "I need your power. My village... it is dying."
Baal'Zarath tilted its head, eyes narrowing to slits. *"And you believe I will simply grant you this power because you ask?"*
Mara faltered. The demon's gaze was piercing, as though it saw through her very soul. "I will... offer whatever you ask in return."
A slow, chilling smile spread across the creature's face, the sharp points of its fangs gleaming in the candlelight. *"Anything, you say?"*
Mara nodded, feeling the weight of her words settle like chains around her wrists.
Baal'Zarath rose, stretching its muscular form with languid grace. The air humd with dark magic as the symbol on its forehead pulsed brighter. *"Very well. I shall save your village, cure your lands, banish the sickness... but in return, you will give what I truly desire."*
Mara hesitated. "And what is that?"
The demon-cat's eyes blazed brighter, its voice a low growl as it leaned closer. *"Your soul."*
The room fell deathly silent. Mara's heart pounded in her chest, her mind racing. Could she truly sacrifice herself to save the others? Would the village even be worth saving if she were lost to the darkness forever?
But before she could answer, Baal'Zarath straightened, as if tiring of the ga. *"You have no choice, child. The pact is made the mont you summoned ."*
Mara's vision blurred as the demon's magic wrapped around her. Darkness closed in, and her body grew cold. As her consciousness faded, she heard the echo of the demon's laughter, a haunting sound that would follow her into the void.
The last thing she saw were the demon's burning eyes, glowing with triumphant malice.
