The hollow did not break like glass—it collapsed like a lung punctured, sucking itself inward. The survivors were pulled through the fracture, hurled into a cascade of light and shadow that spun without direction.
Kael tumbled with arms flailing, shards of his shattered blade spiraling around him like fragnts of stars. His scars burned, not with pain but with mory—each glowing fissure replaying flashes of every life he had lost. He clenched his fists and roared against the torrent, forcing his body to hold together.
Elara clutched the boy to her chest, wrapping herself around him as the storm of fragnts sought to tear him apart. His glow flickered dangerously, surging too bright, then nearly vanishing. She whispered into the rush, her voice breaking but determined: “Stay with . You are not light alone. You are flesh, bone, breath—mine.”
The widow spun through the descent, her hair a whip of black silk, her torn palms bleeding openly now. The blood did not vanish—it hung in the torrent like ruby stars. Her eyes widened as she realized: their wounds, their flaws, their fractures were writing themselves into this place. She mouthed a vow, soundless yet blazing: We mark the unmarked.
The scarred woman clutched her broken spear to her chest. It vibrated, shards of its jagged edge humming like a tuning fork against the storm. She bared her teeth, thrusting it outward. Each thrust carved a groove in the torrent, as if her defiance alone could channel chaos. She laughed hoarsely, her throat raw: “If this is ruin, I’ll make it bleed pathways!”
The farr tumbled end over end, his drum slipping from his grip. Desperation clawed through him as he reached, fingers grazing the rim. At last he caught it, hugging it tight. He struck it with both fists, and though no sound carried, the rhythm pulsed—a vibration that curved the torrent around them, shaping descent into a spiral rather than an endless fall.
The Unborn’s voice followed, thin as cobwebs, stretched and broken by their defiance:
“You fall into what cannot hold. Fracture breeds only collapse. Beyond this is nothing—end upon end upon end.”
Kael bared his teeth, flas flickering in his scars. “Then let the ends choke on us.”
The boy stirred. His glow steadied into rhythm, answering the farr’s drumbeat. Pulse and vibration intertwined, weaving into the torrent around them. For the first ti, the chaos bent with them instead of against them.
Elara kissed his brow, tears scattering into the storm like sparks. “Yes, love. Not undone—rewoven.”
The widow spread her hands, her blood tracing symbols in the whirling light. The scarred woman drove her spear along the sa lines. The torrent shuddered, slowed, ford spirals around their bodies like a cocoon.
The descent steadied.
And then—ground.
They slamd onto a vast surface of cracked stone, the air thick with dust and heat. Above them stretched not sky, but an endless vault of fractured stars, each one leaking streams of light like wounds in the firmant.
The farr staggered upright, his drum still clutched. “We’re not erased.”
Kael pushed himself to his knees, eyes scanning the alien horizon of broken towers rising from the stone. His scars glowed like molten rivers.
“No,” he growled, breath ragged. “We’ve only fallen deeper.”
