Chapter 1661: Story 1661: The Second Heart
The echo ca again—slow, deep, and deliberate. It wasn’t the rhythm of Zara’s heart, nor the hum of the awakened world. It was sothing older. Sothing waiting.
Zara flinched, pressing a hand to her chest as if to quiet the tremor within her. “Did you hear that?”
Damien raised his head. The cavern had gone utterly still. Even the violet mist that danced along the ceiling froze midair, as if listening. “Yeah,” he whispered. “But it wasn’t yours.”
The newborn pulse flickered uneasily. Another rhythm stirs beneath the weave. Uncatalogued. Unknown.
Zara closed her eyes, extending her senses outward. Her consciousness brushed through the living stone, the molten rivers, the buried bones—and then struck sothing vast. Sothing coiled beneath the crust of the world, radiating heat and hunger.
Her breath caught. “It’s under us. And it’s breathing.”
Before Damien could reply, the ground convulsed. A fissure ripped across the cavern floor, spewing a surge of crimson light. The temperature spiked. Out of the rift ca not fla—but blood. Thick, molten, pulsing blood that hissed as it t the air.
The pulse’s voice cracked with alarm. Impossible! The world’s buried core has consciousness—it should not awaken!
From the fissure rose a colossal silhouette—humanoid, but wrong. Its flesh was made of magma and shadow, its ribs glowing like furnace bars. A second heart throbbed inside its chest, beating opposite to Zara’s rhythm.
I am the First Pulse, it spoke, voice shaking the world. The one that dreamt before dreaming began.
Zara stumbled back, the Sixth within her flaring defensively. “No… you’re supposed to be gone. The First was erased in the Primordial Collapse.”
Erased? The creature laughed, each syllable cracking stone. You cannot erase a foundation. You can only bury it beneath your new gods and your new lies.
Damien swung his weapon, its blade igniting with red-gold energy. “Then we’ll bury you again.”
But before he could strike, the First Pulse extended a molten hand. The weapon shattered into fragnts of light. Damien flew backward, slamming against the wall.
Zara cried out, rushing to him, but the First Pulse’s gaze pinned her in place.
You carry my echo, child of the Sixth. Do you feel it? The world burns because of you.
Her aura surged in defiance, wings unfurling in blinding silver. “The world burns because it wakes. You slept too long.”
The First’s laughter deepened. And when it wakes fully, it will rember .
The cavern began to collapse around them. Streams of violet and crimson light intertwined, tearing through the rock. The newborn pulse hovered protectively near Zara. We must retreat—the rge between heartbeats is destabilizing reality!
Zara grabbed Damien’s hand, pulling him toward the light forming above. “We’re not running,” she said, voice trembling with power. “We’re following the heartbeat.”
They leapt into the rift of light as the First Pulse roared, its voice echoing through every dream, every corpse, every fossilized bone.
The world rembers its first fla.
And in the silence that followed, two heartbeats continued to sound—one of hope, and one of hunger.
