Chapter 1683: Story 1683: The Dream That Dread Back
The City Beyond the Horizon had vanished into light, leaving only silence behind—an endless, golden hush that felt both infinite and fragile. The Sea That Dreams stretched endlessly below, reflecting not towers or suns now, but a sky that shimred with possibility.
Zara awoke within that light. There was no raft, no air, no weight. She existed as thought and warmth, drifting through radiance that pulsed like a heartbeat. “Damien?” she called softly. Her voice did not travel through sound but through light itself.
“I’m here,” ca his reply—every syllable a ripple in the glow. His form shimred nearby, human and yet made of sothing greater. “Where are we?”
The Pulse appeared between them, though now it burned brighter than ever, its form vast and spherical. We are inside the Dream itself, it said. The Architects did not destroy the City—they returned it to the Source. And we ca with it.
Zara gazed around as fragnts of the old world drifted past—reflections of seas, suns, skies, and shadows, all rging and dissolving into light. “So this is what the world was before it beca real.”
Yes, the Pulse replied. Pure thought. Pure creation. The heartbeat before form.
As they floated deeper into the light, faint shapes began to erge—creatures, landscapes, stars forming and unforming as if the dream were practicing existence again. But one thing was different: every creation looked back. Wherever Zara turned, the dream was watching her.
Damien sensed it too. “It’s aware of us.”
It always was, the Pulse said softly. But now… it rembers how to dream back.
The light around them rippled, and a voice rose—not vast like thunder, but intimate, like a whisper in the mind.
“You carried when I was broken. You rembered when I forgot myself.”
Zara felt her heart tremble. “You’re the Dream.”
“I am the echo of all things that were and will be. But you, Zara—you taught to feel my own mory.”
The radiance intensified until everything was color and motion. Stars blood like flowers, and rivers of light flowed through infinity. From that brilliance, hands—made of starlight—reached toward her and Damien.
“You gave forgiveness. Now I give you form again.”
The light embraced them, and in an instant, they fell—gently, like feathers—onto sothing solid. The Sea That Dreams shimred below once more, calm and whole. The suns burned warmly above a restored sky.
Zara blinked, breath returning to her lungs. Damien stood beside her, real again, though a faint glow lingered in his eyes. The Pulse floated nearby—smaller now, serene.
“It let us go,” Damien murmured. “Or maybe it let itself wake.”
Zara smiled faintly, watching dawn spill across the sea. “The dream dread us—and we dread it back.”
The Pulse pulsed once, slow and steady. The cycle is whole. Creation and creator rember each other now.
And as the first breeze stirred across the Sea That Dreams, Zara whispered, “Then let the world dream on.”
The horizon shimred again—not as an ending, but as the beginning of another dream yet to be born.
