Chapter 1708: Story 1708: The Shadow That Rembered
The sun rose gently, its warmth strange and fragile, as if unsure of its own rebirth. The air shimred with the scent of rain and ash, of beginnings stitched from endings. Elias knelt, pressing his hand to the soil—real soil, damp and alive. For the first ti in what felt like forever, he felt the pulse of life beneath his fingers.
Mara stood beside him, squinting toward the horizon. The newborn light cast long, soft shadows across the plain. But one of them… didn’t belong.
“Elias,” she whispered, her hand tightening around her sword. “Do you see it?”
He followed her gaze. Beyond the rolling hills, where the light should have driven darkness away, sothing moved—slowly, deliberately. A shape too sharp for morning, too dark for shadow.
The air trembled.
The Pale Dawn’s parting words echoed in his mind: Then begin again…
But beginnings, Elias knew, always carried their own ghosts.
They started toward the anomaly. Every step forward deepened the chill. Birds—newborn things of light and mory—fluttered from the trees and fell silent mid-flight, dissolving into mist. The sun dimd, as if sothing was feeding on its warmth.
By the ti they reached the ridge, the shadow had taken form.
It was Elias.
Or rather, what Elias might have been if fire had consud him completely. His reflection stood amid the withered grass, wrapped in darkness that bent the light around it. His eyes glowed faint silver—the sa hue as Elias’s Firelight heart.
Mara froze. “No…”
The doppelgänger smiled faintly. “Yes.” Its voice was Elias’s, but deeper, broken. “I am what the Pale Dawn forgot to erase. The mory of destruction given shape.”
Elias felt his own chest burn. The Firelight within him pulsed violently, reacting to its twin. “You shouldn’t exist.”
“I exist because you do,” the shadow said, stepping closer. “When you rebuilt the world, you rebuilt . The fire, the frost, the void—you carried them all inside. I am the balance you refused to keep.”
The ground cracked beneath them, half turning to fla, half to ice. The newborn world trembled, struggling to hold form.
Mara stepped between them. “Then we’ll end you, before you end this world.”
The shadow tilted its head. “You can’t end what makes you whole.”
It lunged. The impact shook the air—Elias t it blade to blade, fire clashing against darkness. Sparks of silver and black erupted, painting the sky in fractured light. Mara joined the strike, her sword singing through the haze, but the shadow caught it effortlessly.
“I am every choice you regret,” it whispered. “Every life your fire took.”
Elias roared and drove his blade through its chest—but there was no blood, no resistance. Only reflection.
The shadow laughed softly. “You can’t kill mory.”
Then, just before it faded into mist, it whispered:
“You can only beco it.”
The sky tore open above them, and light bled into darkness once more.
Mara turned to Elias. His eyes were silver now—cold, flickering.
“Elias,” she said, voice trembling, “tell that’s still you.”
He looked toward the horizon, where the world they had saved began to fracture again.
“I don’t know,” he said. “But whatever I am… it rembers you.”
And sowhere beyond the rising sun, the shadow smiled.
