Chapter 1744: Story 1744: The Valley of Unfinished Tomorrows

The pathway ahead shimred into existence, woven from threads that glowed a dim, uncertain gray—like fog caught in moonlight. As the trio stepped onto it, the ground felt strangely weightless, as though it wasn’t fully committed to being solid.

Tovin tested it with his boot. “This place doesn’t feel… done.”

Marra scanned the drifting fibers around them. “Because it isn’t. The Weave hasn’t finished this space.”

Erian’s grip tightened on the Dreamfire’s mory. “Or soone never finished their dream.”

The gray pathway widened into a vast valley—not of grass or stone, but of half-ford shapes. Houses with no doors. Trees with no leaves. Roads that ended abruptly in blank air. Ghostly outlines flickered everywhere, dissolving before they could fully form.

Marra whispered, “It’s like walking through a world paused before it ever began.”

The Weave’s faraway voice resonated faintly:

“This fracture was born from dreams abandoned too soon.”

Erian exhaled. “We’re inside soone’s unfinished life.”

As they moved through the valley, whispers followed them—soft, wistful, incomplete sentences drifting like wind.

“One day I’ll…”

“Soon I’ll start…”

“Maybe tomorrow…”

Each phrase faded before completing itself.

Tovin shivered. “This is worse than the screams.”

A sudden glow caught Erian’s eye.

In the center of the valley, atop a rising mound of half-shaped stone, stood a lone figure—more solid than the rest of the world but cracked along their edges. Their silhouette flickered between countless versions: an artist, a scholar, a traveler, a parent, a warrior—all possibilities collapsing into one trembling form.

Marra approached slowly. “Are you the drear here?”

The figure looked up. Their voice was soft, hollow, and unbearably tired.

“I had so many futures…”

“But I lived none of them.”

The valley trembled. The unfinished shapes around them began to collapse, dissolving into drifting gray dust.

The figure continued, eyes full of pain:

“I wanted to start new things. I told myself I would… tomorrow.”

“But tomorrow kept moving further away.”

The ground split open.

A massive presence rose—towering above them.

The fracture guardian.

Its form was made of broken clocks, unfinished pages, abandoned canvases, half-built structures—every unstarted dream bound together. Its voice was a grinding echo:

“Tomorrow. Tomorrow. Tomorrow.”

The guardian stepped forward, each tread erasing pieces of the valley.

Tovin braced himself. “We can’t fight that thing. It’s everything they never beca!”

Erian turned to the drear. “What did you want most?”

The figure hesitated—flickering through dozens of faces—until finally settling into a single true one: a young adult with weary but earnest eyes.

They whispered:

“I wanted to begin. Just… begin.”

Marra placed a hand over theirs. “Then finish sothing now. Choose one thing. Let it exist.”

The drear closed their eyes.

A single spark ignited in their chest—

a small glowing shape forming between their hands.

A journal.

Simple. Uncomplicated.

But complete.

The guardian roared and cracked, its towering form collapsing as the journal’s glow expanded. The unfinished valley reassembled itself—paths extending, trees forming leaves, houses gaining windows as structure returned.

The drear’s body softened into light, peaceful at last.

“I finally started…”

The motes drifted into the sky, weaving themselves into the repaired threads of the valley.

The path ahead brightened in shimring gold.

“Seven fractures,” Erian whispered.

Tovin forced a smile. “Only a universe left to go.”

Marra stepped into the golden corridor.

“Then let’s not wait for tomorrow.”
