The thread-road carried them forward, stretching into an endless horizon that pulsed like a living artery. Every few steps, the ground vibrated—soft, rhythmic, unmistakable.
A heartbeat.
But not human.
Not mortal.
Not even divine.
This was the pulse of creation itself.
Marra squinted into the far glow. “Whatever that is… it sounds alive.”
“It is,” Lun murmured, voice unsteady. “The Loom’s core isn’t a machine. It’s a being.”
Tovin shuddered. “Great. So the universe has organs. Next you’ll tell it catches colds.”
Erian didn’t answer. His eyes were fixed on the shifting light ahead. Each pulse shook the road, sending distortions through the air like heat waves. The closer they ca, the more threads vibrated violently around them—as if warning them away.
The Loomchild floated slightly above the road, their form flickering. “Be ready. The Heart Beneath All Threads does not like being… perceived.”
“Perceived?” Marra echoed. “We’re not here to judge it—we’re trying to save it.”
“That may not matter.”
The world around them trembled.
The path widened suddenly into an enormous platform woven from millions of shimring strands. At its center, suspended above the void by threads thicker than tree trunks, was a colossal structure.
Not a heart in any literal sense—
but sothing that felt like one.
A knot of threads endlessly weaving, unweaving, reweaving themselves. Colors surged through it with each pulse—gold, silver, red, black, shades unseen by any mortal eye. The fabric of reality birthed itself here, mont by mont.
Tovin whispered, awestruck, “It’s… beautiful.”
Marra took a defensive stance. “And dangerous.”
She was right.
The Heart spasd.
A shockwave blasted outward, nearly knocking them off the platform. Erian staggered back, barely catching Lun as they fell to one knee, clutching their chest.
Lun’s thread flickered visibly—thin cracks of shadow running through the silver.
“Lun!” Erian knelt beside them. “Hold on.”
The Loomchild’s glow dimd. “The Heart is destabilizing. It’s reflecting fractures in the Weave—fractures we caused, fractures others caused, fractures left over from ages before yours.”
Threads whipped wildly around them, so snapping midair, others fusing where they shouldn’t.
Marra growled, “Then tell us what to do!”
Before the Loomchild could speak, the Heart convulsed again.
This ti, it spoke.
Not with sound, but with thought—heavy, ancient, trembling with strain.
“WHO PULLS MY THREADS?”
The force of the question forced them to their knees. Even the Loomchild faltered under its weight.
Erian gritted his teeth. “We’re here to fix this! The Weave is tearing apart!”
A long silence.
Then the Heart’s voice softened—barely.
“YOU ARE NOT WEAVERS.”
“We’ve rewoven dead patterns,” the Loomchild insisted. “We’ve survived the Weaver’s judgnt. Our threads are intertwined with the fate of this world.”
Another pulse.
Another tremor.
Then:
“ENTER… IF YOU CAN BEAR THE UNMAKING.”
The threads beneath them unraveled—forming a glowing opening into the Heart’s inner chamber.
Tovin squeaked, “Uh… does anyone else hear ‘certain doom’ in that invitation?”
Marra smirked despite the danger. “All of us. Which ans we’re going in.”
Erian nodded. “Together.”
The Loomchild drifted to the entrance, trembling. “Be warned. Within the Heart, your threads will show you everything you hide… and everything you fear.”
Lun rose slowly, steadying themselves. “Then let’s face it.”
They stepped into the light—
And the Heart swallowed them whole.
