They sprinted through the archive hall as the creature barreled after them, shredding tal shelves like they were paper. Damon’s boots pounded the rusted floor, each step echoing down the long aisles. The lights flickered wildly overhead, reacting to the presence of Project Echo as if even the electricity feared it.

Shadow darted ahead, weaving between fallen cabinets. Ember stayed at Lira’s side, bumping her leg to keep her moving, her growls deepening with every thunderous impact behind them.

“Left!” Damon shouted.

They turned sharply into another row—only to stop dead.

The aisle was blocked.

Cabinets, shelves, and fallen debris had collapsed into a mountain of tal and paper. No gaps. No crawl spaces. No way through.

The girl gasped, “W-we’re trapped!”

Damon scanned desperately. “Back—move ba—”

CRACK.

A towering shelf toppled at the far end of the row, thrown aside like a toy. Through the dust, a silhouette erged—distorted, tall, its limbs bending with unnatural elasticity. Its skin writhed as if sothing beneath it was trying to break free. The creature’s head twitched with rapid, animalistic jerks... then stilled.

It tilted its face toward them.

Not seeing.

Sensing.

Listening.

It inhaled sharply.

“Lira...” it whispered, in Lira’s exact voice.

Her legs buckled.

Damon grabbed her arm. “Don’t listen. Don’t react.”

But the creature reacted for her.

It suddenly lurched forward.

“THIS WAY!” Damon dragged them into another aisle.

Shadow shot past them, barking sharply as if marking the path. Ember followed behind Lira, pushing her forward with nudges and low growls every ti she slowed.

The library twisted like a maze, and the more they turned, the more the shelves seed to shift into different arrangents. Damon didn’t trust the geotry of this place; nothing underground stayed still.

Behind them, the monster thundered through the aisles—listening, learning, adjusting.

They reached an opening at the far end of the archive hall: a tall, reinforced door half-buried in debris. A rusted sign above it read:

RECORDS STORAGE — B4 ACCESS

Another level down.

Another risk.

But it was a direction the creature wasn’t blocking.

Damon rushed forward, lifting a fallen beam with a grunt. Lira helped, pushing it aside enough to expose the door handle.

Shadow barked sharply—a warning.

The creature’s footsteps stopped.

Silence swallowed the air.

Damon froze.

Lira whispered, “Why did it stop?”

The answer ca a second later.

The creature mimicked Damon’s voice—perfectly this ti.

“I’m... right here.”

It was close.

Too close.

Damon turned the handle. It jamd.

He pulled harder. No movent.

“Co on—co on—”

The girl grabbed his sleeve. “I hear sothing... below us.”

They all went still.

A low chanical rumble vibrated beneath the floor, like sothing powering up. The tal grated softly. Dust drifted from above.

This door wasn’t just an exit.

It was connected to sothing alive.

Damon slamd his shoulder into it.

The door burst open.

A rush of stale, icy air hit them.

“Inside!” he ordered.

They spilled through the doorway just as the creature lunged into the aisle behind them, the ground trembling under its impact. Damon yanked the door closed.

But there was no lock.

No bar.

No seal.

Only darkness ahead.

And the sound of sothing waking below them.

Damon whispered, “We run. Again.”

And the door behind them—

—began to bend.
