The roar from beneath the platform wasn’t chanical anymore.

It sounded alive.

A deep, resonant bellow rolled up from the abyss, vibrating the tal under their feet. The cables overhead snapped taut, quivering like nerves under strain. The air grew colder, each breath crystalizing into pale mist.

Project Echo dragged itself up from the dented wall, joints cracking. Its stolen skin flickered through faces—hundreds, thousands—like a glitching collage of the dead. It stared up at Lira floating in the beam.

Not hunting now.

Waiting.

Claiming.

Damon shielded his eyes. “Lira! Fight it! Don’t let it in!”

But Lira barely heard him.

Inside the column of light, the mories wrapped around her, slipping into her mind like whispered truths. Scenes she had never lived burned through her thoughts:

A man signing the mory Engine blueprint.

A scientist injecting the Echo serum into a pale, trembling volunteer.

A child crying as alarms blared through the facility.

A city losing its sun for the first ti.

None of it hers.

Yet they fit into her mind like pieces returning to an unfinished puzzle.

The First mory stepped forward, its edges glitching violently. “Careful,” it warned gently. “Too much identity at once can shatter you.”

Lira’s voice trembled through the chamber, layered with dozens of borrowed tones. “I... I don’t know what’s real. I can’t tell which mories are mine.”

“That is the point,” the projection said.

“You are becoming more.”

Damon clenched his fists. “Shut up! She’s not your vessel!”

The projection flickered. “She is not a vessel. She is the key.”

The platform shuddered again—this ti followed by a grinding of massive gears beneath them. Sothing colossal was moving in the depths... climbing... rising.

Shadow whimpered, backing away.

Ember snarled toward the abyss, tail tucked.

Damon’s pulse spiked. “What’s coming up?”

The First mory answered quietly.

“The Original Core.”

The hum deepened into a thunderous heartbeat.

Lira gasped, arching in the light as if pulled by invisible strings. The mories inside her spun faster, colors bleeding into each other. Her pupils widened into black voids.

Project Echo crept closer on all fours, its limbs stretching grotesquely. Its voice—an orchestra of stolen tones—echoed through the hall:

“Give. . Identity.”

It leaped.

The beam of light flared, exploding outward in a shockwave that slamd Echo mid-air and sent Damon crashing to the ground. The creature screeched, writhing as its form warped uncontrollably—mories ripping out of it in streams of blue static.

Lira’s voice bood across the chamber, deeper and layered:

“STOP.”

Everything froze.

Even the Engine’s heartbeat paused for one impossible second.

Then Lira slowly descended, the light dimming around her. She touched the ground... but didn’t collapse.

She stood still.

Too still.

Her eyes opened.

They weren’t her eyes anymore—

They were shifting, swirling with fractured mories, like an ocean of forgotten faces.

Damon whispered, terrified and awed, “Li... Lira?”

She turned toward him.

A tear ran down her cheek.

But the voice that answered was not hers.

Not fully.

“I rember everything... including what’s coming.”

The platform trembled violently.

The Original Core was rising.
