The explosion of light didn’t fade—it broke.
Like glass under impossible pressure, reality splintered into a thousand shards. Each shard reflected a different mont, a different life, a different world. Damon felt himself torn through all of them at once—past, present, future, imagined, forgotten—all folding into him before slipping away again.
He crashed onto sothing solid.
Hard.
Cold.
Real.
Damon gasped, coughing as he pushed himself up. Concrete beneath his palms. Smoke in the air. A ruined skyline stretching out ahead.
The city.
But not as he rembered it.
Buildings were distorted—so warped sideways, others duplicated like echoes frozen in steel and stone. Streets bled into each other. mory-light flickered across the broken windows like ghostly reflections.
Shadow and Ember materialized beside him, shaking violently, as if struggling to hold their forms.
“Lira...” Damon whispered hoarsely.
She lay a few feet away, glowing faintly, her body curled inward as if in pain. The shimring veins that once flowed like controlled rivers now sparked and jittered chaotically, like wires shorting out.
He rushed to her.
“Lira! Lira—hey—stay with .” He knelt, lifting her gently.
Her eyes fluttered open...but they weren’t her eyes.
Not fully.
They flickered between shades—blue, brown, gray—as if multiple identities fought behind them.
“D... Damon?” she whispered, her voice layered with three other voices beneath. “Did I... hold it back?”
He took her glowing hands. “You held . That was enough.”
But the truth around them cracked.
A low hum vibrated through the air—deep, resonant, wrong.
Damon turned.
Behind them...
the sky split open.
A massive tear in reality hovered above the city, widening slowly, its edges frayed with mory-light that dripped like molten glass. Through the tear, Damon saw shapes twisting—human silhouettes collapsing into wolves, wolves dissolving into ash, ash reforming as children, children stretching into shadows.
Identities collapsing.
The Maelstrom hadn’t been destroyed.
It had escaped.
Lira groaned, clutching her head. “I couldn’t contain all of it... too much... too broken...”
He held her tighter. “You did more than anyone could. You saved us.”
“No...” She shook her head weakly. “I moved the Maelstrom. I didn’t end it. It’s spreading now... into the world.”
A sound rippled across the ruined street.
A scream.
Human.
Raw.
Damon spun toward the source.
A lone survivor stumbled out from behind a collapsed bus—eyes blank, shifting, flickering between faces that weren’t his. His body warped, his form glitching like unstable data.
The man reached toward Damon, trembling violently.
“Wh-Wh-Who... am... I...?”
He collapsed, collapsing into an echo that evaporated into light.
Damon swallowed hard.
“This is happening everywhere, isn’t it?” he whispered.
Lira nodded faintly. “The city’s identity is unraveling. If the tear grows... the world will forget itself.”
The hum deepened. The sky fracture widened another ter.
Shadow growled. Ember barked frantically.
Damon lifted Lira in his arms.
“Then we stop it,” he said.
Lira looked at him, struggling to stay awake.
“How... Damon? I can barely stay... .”
He stared at the widening tear.
“We find the source. We close the tear. And we make sure you don’t face it alone.”
Lira managed a weak smile.
“Together?”
“Always.”
Above them, the tear scread open—
and sothing enormous moved behind it.
The Maelstrom had found a new form.
And it was coming through.
