The sky rippled like a film stretched too tight.

Where the Maelstrom once spilled chaos, the tear now drew inward—slowly, deliberately—like sothing on the other side was pulling its limbs into a shape it had never worn before.

Damon held Lira close as she shivered violently, glowing veins dimming to a faint pulse. Shadow and Ember circled them protectively, snarling at the shifting sky.

“What’s happening?” Damon whispered.

Lira swallowed hard. “It found an anchor... your photograph. Your old mories. It’s forming itself around them.”

Damon’s chest tightened. The photo was all he had left of the life he never thought he’d see again—faces he couldn’t even fully recall without the image.

Now the Maelstrom was building a shape out of them.

The sky bulged.

A silhouette descended.

Human-shaped.

But wrong.

Very wrong.

It stepped through the shrinking tear and hit the ground with a soundless impact—like gravity wasn’t sure it wanted to hold it.

Shadow growled, fur bristling.

Ember crouched low, teeth exposed.

The figure stood motionless.

At first glance it looked like a man—broad-shouldered, roughly Damon’s height. But its body flickered, as if reality were trying to reject it. The features on its face wavered, cycling between half-ford expressions that never fully landed on one.

“What... what did it choose?” Damon breathed.

Lira gripped his sleeve, still shaking. “You gave it an identity. Now it’s trying to imitate it.”

The figure lifted its head.

Its face locked—suddenly, sharply—into place.

Damon staggered backward.

Lira’s breath hitched.

Shadow barked in confusion.

Because the creature now wore a face that looked like Damon’s.

Not perfect. Not whole. Like an artist sculpting from shattered glass.

But unmistakable.

“Damon...” Lira whispered, voice trembling. “It anchored to your mory of family. Sothing familiar. Sothing it thinks you’ll accept.”

“It’s not ,” Damon said hoarsely.

The creature blinked for the first ti.

Then it spoke.

Its voice was Damon’s voice—layered with static, broken at the edges.

“I rember...”

The words sent a chill through the ruined street.

Damon stepped back. “No... that’s not possible.”

The creature looked down at its hands, fingers twitching like they were relearning existence.

“Mother.”

A glitching step forward.

“Father.”

Another step.

“Ho.”

Its eyes lifted—reflective, searching, desperate.

“Damon.”

Lira grabbed Damon’s arm. “Don’t get close. It’s not your family. It’s not even a person. It just thinks those mories are its birthright.”

The creature tilted its head, studying Damon with a childlike curiosity.

“You... are .”

“No,” Damon said firmly. “I’m not your identity. You stole mine.”

The creature winced—confusion contorting its stolen features.

Then a deeper crack split across its skin, glowing with mory-light.

Lira’s eyes widened. “It’s unstable. Identities made from echoes don’t hold unless—”

The creature suddenly lunged.

Not at Damon.

At Lira.

Shadow and Ember leaped instantly, intercepting it in mid-air. The creature slamd into them, its flickering hands grasping, desperate.

Lira scread.

Damon ran toward them.

The creature’s voice tore through the air:

“GIVE BACK WHAT I AM!”

The ground ruptured beneath them—

And the tear in the sky reopened.

This ti not as a doorway.

But as a scream.
