The fault line didn’t sleep.

Even as the concrete wall sealed behind them, the chamber humd with restless energy. Lights flickered softly overhead, responding not to switches but to presence—instability. Damon felt it like pressure behind his eyes, dozens of anomalies resonating faintly with the mark in his chest.

The tall woman stepped forward again. “I’m Mara,” she said. “I run this refuge—if you can call it that.”

“A fault,” Calder corrected.

Mara shot him a look. “A fragile one.”

Her gaze returned to Damon. “You don’t just carry a mark. You amplify others. That makes you dangerous.”

Damon nodded. “I’ve noticed.”

A few nervous laughs rippled through the group. Tension eased—but only slightly.

Mara gestured, and several anomalies stepped back, creating an open circle in the center of the chamber. “If you’re going to stay here, we need to know what you are.”

Calder folded his arms. “And how fast the Archivist will react.”

Damon stepped into the circle without hesitation. Shadow and Ember followed, sitting close, grounding him.

“What do you want to do?” Damon asked.

Mara’s expression hardened. “Nothing dramatic. Just... exist.”

The lights dimd.

The hum deepened.

Damon felt it instantly—the world pressing inward, invisible pressure testing the boundaries of his reality. The mark ward, responding, steady but alert.

Around him, anomalies reacted.

The man with the delayed shadow stumbled, shadow snapping closer like it had been yanked. The hovering child dropped to the ground with a startled cry. Glass beneath the woman’s skin flared brighter.

Mara’s jaw tightened. “There. That reaction—that’s why we’re afraid of you.”

Damon clenched his fists, focusing inward. “I’m not trying to do anything.”

“That’s the problem,” Calder said quietly. “You don’t have control yet.”

The pressure increased.

Damon’s vision blurred. The mark flared hotter, urging release—correction through force. The easy solution.

He resisted.

Instead, he rembered the street. Lira’s hands on his chest. The wolves pressed against his legs. Shared weight. Shared will.

He breathed out slowly.

The heat eased.

The pressure retreated.

Around him, anomalies steadied. The hovering child floated again—this ti smoothly. The delayed shadow settled into place. The glow beneath the glass-skinned woman dimd.

Silence filled the chamber.

Mara stared. “You didn’t push back,” she said. “You... absorbed it.”

Damon opened his eyes. Sweat ran down his neck. “I redistributed it.”

Calder’s expression shifted—sothing like awe flickering beneath his calm. “That shouldn’t be possible.”

The mark pulsed once, almost approving.

Mara stepped closer. “That’s your first lesson,” she said slowly. “Power isn’t about force. It’s about balance.”

Thunder rolled faintly overhead, deeper now—closer.

Calder glanced upward. “The Archivist felt that.”

“How long?” Lira asked.

“Minutes. Maybe less.”

Alarms began to sound—low, resonant tones vibrating through the stone.

Mara turned sharply. “Stations! Shields up!”

Anomalies scattered, moving with practiced urgency.

Damon straightened. “What’s coming?”

Calder t his eyes. “Not a Remnant.”

The lights dimd further as the hum rose to a near-painful pitch.

“This,” Calder said, “is a probe.”

The ground trembled.

The mark burned—not demanding, but warning.

Damon squared his shoulders, Shadow and Ember rising beside him.

“Then,” he said, steady despite the fear crawling up his spine, “let’s see what the world sends when it wants answers.”

Far above, unseen and unblinking, the Archivist initiated first contact.

And the age of observation ended.
