Not all at once—more like a cautious animal testing the air before stepping fully into view. Dust settled. Shadows snapped back into alignnt. The Dead Corridor exhaled, its fractured structures deciding—tentatively—to remain standing.

But the pressure never fully left.

Damon could still feel it.

Watching.

Not like a hunter.

Like a witness.

Calder powered his device back on with shaking hands. It flickered, struggled, then stabilized into sothing unfamiliar. "I've never seen a system behave like this," he said. "The War Constant isn't dormant. It's… attentive."

Lira frowned. "That's worse, isn't it?"

Calder didn't answer imdiately. "It ans we're no longer noise," he said finally. "We're data."

Shadow paced in a slow circle, hackles low but not raised. Ember remained seated, eyes fixed on the horizon, muscles coiled as if the mont the world blinked wrong, she'd be gone.

Damon pressed a hand to his chest.

The mark was quiet.

Not inactive—listening back.

"Observation isn't rcy," Damon said. "It's evaluation."

The sky above them had changed. The absence was still there, but thinner now, like a veil stretched too far. In its place, faint structures shimred—vast geotries just outside perception, constantly rearranging.

Lira shivered. "I don't like being understood by sothing that big."

"Neither do I," Damon replied. "But this might be the only space we get."

A low vibration rolled through the Corridor—not a tremor, but a signal. Calder's device chirped once, then displayed a single line of text.

ANOMALY STATUS: SUSTAINED.

RESOLUTION: DEFERRED.

Calder swallowed. "Deferred resolution ans it's postponing correction until it can model long-term outcos." He looked at Damon. "You just turned yourselves into an experint."

Damon almost laughed.

"Good," he said. "Then it'll finally have to wait."

The realization spread slowly among them: the War Constant hadn't withdrawn protection. The Archivist could still act. Hunters could still co. Corrections could still fall.

But not this way.

Not now.

Lira knelt, brushing her fingers across the ground. The imprint-glow was gone, but faint scars remained—nas, symbols, marks of people who had refused erasure. "So what do we do with ti?" she asked quietly.

Damon looked around the Corridor.

At the damage that hadn't healed.

At the bonds that hadn't broken.

"We use it badly," he said. "Imperfectly. We rebuild without permission."

Calder gave a strained smile. "You realize the Archivist will try to compensate elsewhere."

"I know," Damon said. "Observation cuts both ways. The more it watches us, the more it has to account for us."

Another vibration rolled through the sky—lighter this ti. Almost tentative.

For the briefest mont, Damon felt sothing unexpected ripple through the link.

Not judgnt.

Curiosity.

The War Constant was learning what it ant to hesitate.

"Watch if you want," he murmured. "Just don't pretend you understand us yet."
