Calder’s device resisted at first, screens stuttering, data refusing to resolve. Then it stabilized—cleaner than ever before.

Calder swallowed. “It’s not asuring output,” he said slowly. “It’s asuring alignnt over ti.” He looked up. “How closely a life follows its assigned arc.”

Calder didn’t answer.
Damon already knew.
Purpose had been injected. Now it was being audited.

“Yes,” Damon replied. “Soon they won’t need you to correct them.” He raised his voice—not loud, but clear. “They’ll do it themselves.”
The mark in his chest pulsed—sharp now. The system was no longer rely interested.

Calder’s device chid again, colder than before.
