They did not stop running until the land rose and the sea could no longer be heard.
The path carried them into an old coastal town built from stone and bone-white timber, its streets narrow and crooked as if designed to confuse both invaders and ghosts. Shutters hung open, creaking softly though there was no wind. Nets lay tangled across doorways like forgotten traps.
Here, the oath pulled differently.
Heavier.
The man slowed, every instinct screaming. “This place rembers itself.”
The woman nodded. “And it’s watching.”
They moved through the town’s spine—an old market street where stalls had collapsed into one another, forming a maze of rotted canvas and splintered wood. Symbols were carved into the stone at ankle height: warding marks, sailors’ prayers, execution tallies.
Soone had tried to prepare.
Zombies stood in doorways and alleys, unmoving. Not the drowned. Not the organized dead from the coast.
These were townsfolk.
Bakers. Children. Watchn.
They stared straight ahead, eyes clouded, bodies rigid—as if paused mid-breath.
The woman brushed too close to one.
Its head snapped toward her.
Not fast.
Intentional.
The oath flared hot across her wrists. Pain lanced up her arms.
“Careful,” the man whispered. “They’re closer to themselves here.”
A bell chid.
Not from the sea.
From beneath the town.
Stone grated as a hatch slid open at the center of the square. Cold air breathed upward, carrying the scent of earth and iron.
The dead reacted imdiately.
All at once, they turned toward the opening.
“They’re being called again,” the woman said.
“But not by the sea,” the man replied.
Sothing rose from the darkness.
It was human-shaped, but wrong—stitched together from different bodies, faces layered and half-rembered. Its eyes glowed faintly with recognition, not hunger.
A watcher.
It spoke with many mouths.
“Unaccounted,” it said. “Unplaced.”
The oath burned.
The man stepped forward. “We’re passing through.”
The watcher tilted its head. “Nothing passes. It only settles.”
The town trembled. Doors slamd shut. Shutters banged as if in panic. The zombies began to move—not toward them, but into the streets, forming a ring.
“They’re closing us in,” the woman said.
“No,” the man corrected. “They’re closing it in.”
The watcher shrieked—a sound of tearing mory—and lunged toward them. The man t it with steel, slicing through layered flesh. It scread again, not in pain, but in offense.
It struck back, hurling him into a stone wall. The woman attacked from behind, blade biting deep. The watcher staggered, its voices overlapping in fury.
“You do not belong,” it roared.
“That makes two of us,” she replied.
They fought in the square as the town pressed inward, buildings leaning, streets narrowing. The oath pulsed, fighting to hold them slightly out of phase.
Finally, the man drove his blade into the watcher’s chest, pinning it to the ground. The woman severed its head.
Silence fell.
The zombies froze again.
The town exhaled.
The watcher’s body dissolved into dust and bone, sinking into the earth as if claid.
The oath cooled—but did not release.
They stood alone in the square.
“This place almost kept us,” the woman said.
“Yes,” the man replied. “And it told the others.”
Far away, beyond the hills, the horn sounded once more.
Closer.
Patient.
The places between attention were shrinking.
And the world was beginning to watch back.
