The map burned cold in the woman's hands.
Not heat—absence. As if warmth itself refused to exist along the inked paths. The blank space ahead pulled at the oath, not with force, but with invitation.
They crossed into it at dusk.
The world did not resist.
It stopped.
Sound dulled first. Footsteps made no echo. Wind brushed their faces without noise. Even the distant horn—once relentless—fell silent, as if swallowed mid-breath.
"This is wrong," the man said quietly.
"Yes," the woman replied. "But it's consistent."
The land inside the blank space was colorless, drained to shades of ash and pale gold. Shapes existed without definition. Trees stood without bark or leaves, their forms suggested rather than complete. Shadows lagged behind their sources, arriving monts late.
The oath loosened.
For the first ti since it had bound them, it did not pull.
It hovered.
They moved deeper until they reached a settlent that should not have stood—structures half-built, half-erased. Walls ended mid-stone. Staircases climbed into nothing. Doors opened onto air.
Figures wandered there.
Not zombies.
Not living.
They moved cautiously, testing each step as if unsure the ground would remain. Their faces were blurred, features unfinished, like sketches abandoned before detail.
One noticed them.
Then another.
Soon a small crowd gathered—silent, intent, frightened.
A woman stepped forward. Her eyes were clear, but empty of reflection.
"Are you real?" she asked.
The man hesitated. "Define real."
The woman—their woman—felt sothing twist in her chest. "What is this place?"
"A discard," the unfinished woman said. "A remainder. When the systems couldn't decide what we were, they put us here."
"Uncounted," another voice murmured.
"Unnad," said a third.
"Unsorted."
The words hit like echoes of everything they had broken.
The woman's hands trembled. "How many of you?"
The unfinished woman smiled faintly. "We stopped counting. Counting attracts attention."
The ground shuddered—not violently, but uncertainly, like a thought being reconsidered. Cracks of light opened briefly in the sky, then sealed.
"They're trying to look again," the man said.
The unfinished people stiffened.
"No," one whispered. "They promised this place was invisible."
The woman understood then. This blank space was not just erased—it was protected. Held together by collective refusal to be defined.
"The system learns through certainty," she said. "If you remain unfinished—"
"It can't lock us," the unfinished woman finished.
A distant vibration rippled through the ground. Not the horn—but sothing adjusting.
The oath flared weakly.
"You brought attention with you," the unfinished woman said gently. "But also choice."
She stepped closer to the woman. "You traded your na. You broke your record. You could stay."
The offer hung heavy.
The man looked at her—not pleading, not urging. Just present.
"If we stay," the woman said, "this place becos a pattern."
"Yes," the unfinished woman agreed. "And patterns are visible."
Another tremor.
Cracks stayed open longer this ti.
The woman exhaled slowly. "Then we don't stay."
She reached out and clasped the man's hand.
The oath tightened—not binding, but aligning.
The unfinished people stepped back, understanding.
"Go," the unfinished woman said. "And don't let them finish you."
They ran as the blank space began to fray, edges sharpening into definition.
Behind them, the place without record folded inward—not erased, but hidden deeper.
Ahead, the world resud sound.
The horn did not return.
Instead, sothing new stirred—
a system learning how to hunt what refused to be complete.
