The next day arrived with a strange absence.
Nothing was owed.
The woman realized it when they stopped for water and no one felt the need to ration by fear. Hands dipped, bottles passed, pauses taken—not calculated, not guarded. Consumption ended when thirst did.
The man watched carefully. “Usually this is where the reckoning cos,” he said. “After effort. After sharing.”
“Yes,” she replied. “The bill.”
It never did.
The system searched for it.
Pressure crept in softly, like an accountant arriving late, flipping through ledgers that no longer matched reality. It tested familiar hooks—fatigue, scarcity, obligation.
None caught.
They crossed a stretch of land scarred by old camps: fire pits ringed with bones, supply caches buried too deep to retrieve, warning signs hamred into rock with words like last and only and ours.
Debt had ruled here.
Zombies reacted strangely to the place. So slowed. So veered wide, as if instinct rembered punishnt even when aning was gone. One stopped near a rusted sign and tapped it twice with a finger, listening to the hollow sound.

The woman knelt beside it. “You don’t owe this ground anything,” she said quietly.
The zombie tilted its head. Then, slowly, it turned away.
The system flared faintly—uneasy.
Debt was one of its oldest tools. A way to bind ti to behavior. To ensure future obedience.
Without it, continuity beca slippery.
A survivor stumbled and dropped their pack. Supplies spilled across the dirt. Reflexes twitched—old habits urging imdiate accounting.
No one spoke.
Items were gathered. So returned to the pack. Others did not. A can of food rolled toward a zombie’s foot. It stared at it for a long mont, then nudged it back with surprising care.
The man exhaled. “It’s not keeping score.”
“No,” the woman said. “And neither are we.”
That was when the system pushed harder.
A sharp ache blood in joints. A dull weight settled in chests. Not exhaustion—reminder. A whisper of consequence attempting to assert itself late.
The woman felt it brush the oath.
She did not resist.
She also did not pay.
She slowed her breathing. The ache lingered… then thinned. With nothing to anchor to, it drifted away.
Around them, the sa happened. Discomfort arrived, searched for aning, found none, and dissolved.
The system recoiled.
It could enforce debt only when soone agreed it was real.
Toward evening, they encountered another group—ard, cautious, eyes sharp with expectation.
“What do you want?” one demanded.
The woman answered honestly. “Nothing from you.”
Suspicion rippled. “Then why are you here?”
“We’re passing,” she said. “So are you.”
The words carried no hook.
No trade.
No obligation.
The ard group watched them go, unsettled—not by threat, but by the lack of transaction.
As night settled, the woman felt sothing ease—not relief, not hope.
Release.
Debt required mory sharpened into fear.
They were learning another way to rember.
The man looked up at the darkening sky. “If the world can’t collect… what keeps it together?”
She considered the question as stars appeared, indifferent and unsummoned.
“Nothing,” she said softly. “That’s the point.”
Behind them, old camps remained—heavy with unpaid suffering.
Ahead, the path waited—owing nothing, asking nothing.
And sowhere deep within the system, a ledger finally failed to balance—
Because the world had begun to move
Without agreeing to be paid for it later.
