Now reading: Chapter 1948: Story 1948: The Authority That Could Not Inter from Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition, a Action novel by Sir Faraz.

Authority arrived in person.

That was the mistake.

They heard it before they saw it—engines grinding carefully over ruined ground, asured and confident, refusing to rush. A convoy erged from behind a collapsed seawall: armored vehicles, reinforced glass, insignias still polished enough to reflect light.

Soone still believed in presence.

The man stopped walking. “That looks organized,” he said.

“Yes,” the woman replied. “Which ans it’s fragile.”

The system surged, almost relieved.

Authority did not rely on signals or warnings alone. It embodied consequence. It showed up. It took space. It intervened.

Surely this would restore order.

The convoy halted ahead of them. A figure stepped out—clean gear, visible rank markers, posture trained into straight lines. Weapons were held low but ready, confidence wrapped tightly around restraint.

“You are entering a controlled zone,” the authority announced. No amplification. No theatrics. Just certainty. “This area is being stabilized. You will alter your course.”

The zombies nearby did not react. One leaned against a tire, saring it with salt and blood, then slid down slowly and sat.

The woman t the authority’s gaze. “Stabilized for whom?” she asked.

“For survivors,” the figure replied instantly. “For continuity. For the future.”

The system nodded internally. Correct language. Correct framing.

The man gestured toward the coast. “We were just warned it won’t hold.”

“That warning was premature,” the authority said. “We’ve assessed the risk.”

“Then why are you inland?” the woman asked softly.

A pause—barely a second. Long enough.

The system winced.

Authority did not like being observed from the outside.

“We are here to redirect movent,” the figure said, firr now. “Your presence interferes with recovery operations.”

No one moved.

Not forward.

Not back.

The zombies drifted lazily between the convoy and the group, erasing the visual line of power. One brushed against the authority’s leg. The figure stiffened—but did not strike. The zombie wandered on, uninterested.

Intervention required an enemy.

None presented itself cleanly.

The system searched for escalation. Detainnt. Force. Demonstration.

But the authority hesitated.

Force created witnesses.

Witnesses created consequences.

And consequences no longer obeyed.

“You need to clear the area,” the authority said again, less certain. “This is not optional.”

The woman shook her head—not defiant, not dismissive. Just accurate. “You can’t intervene in motion that isn’t aid anywhere.”

The authority frowned. “That doesn’t make sense.”

“It doesn’t need to,” the man said. “It just keeps happening.”

A subordinate leaned toward the authority, whispering urgently. The woman noticed the tension in their hands—the readiness to act colliding with the lack of justification.

The system strained.

Authority without intervention was just posture.

Minutes passed.

The convoy engines idled. Fuel burned. Ti accumulated.

Finally, the authority spoke again—quieter. “We can’t guarantee your safety if you proceed.”

The woman nodded. “No one has for a long ti.”

That broke it.

Not dramatically.

Not publicly.

The authority stepped back. A gesture was made. The convoy reversed slowly, carefully, preserving dignity through distance.

No orders were given.

No force applied.

Intervention had failed without ever beginning.

As the vehicles disappeared, the system dimd again—another pillar hollowed out.

Authority required action.

Action required clarity.

Clarity had dissolved.

The man watched the empty road. “They wanted us to move,” he said.

“Yes,” the woman replied. “But they didn’t know where.”

They continued along the coast, unredirected, uninterrupted.

Behind them, authority remained—equipped, ranked, intact—

Unable to intervene in a world that no longer paused long enough to be controlled.

Ahead, the path curved gently onward.

Not secured.

Not forbidden.

Just open.

And sowhere within the system, a final illusion cracked—

That showing up—

Was the sa as being able to stop anything at all.
