Now reading: Chapter 1968: Story 1968: The Choice That No Longer Needed R from Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition, a Action novel by Sir Faraz.

Choice beca quiet.

Not removed. Not forbidden. Just no longer surrounded by argunts.

They noticed it when two paths appeared—one along the cliffs, exposed and shorter; the other winding inland through ruins, slower but sheltered. In another ti, debate would have ignited imdiately. Risks weighed. Futures imagined. Responsibility assigned.

Instead, silence settled.

The woman studied both routes without tension. The man waited, realizing no urgency pressed on him to justify anything.

“Well?” soone asked at last.

She shrugged. “Cliffs.”

No explanation followed.

The system jolted.

Choice was supposed to be rationalized. Decisions required reasons—logic, fear, reward. Without justification, behavior could not be predicted or corrected.

This was dangerous.

The system attempted deliberation.

It surfaced calculations—fall probability, exposure ti, ambush likelihood. It reminded them how choices once shaped outcos, how bad decisions had costs that echoed.

The calculations appeared.

Then faded.

The group moved toward the cliffs simply because feet turned that way.

A survivor laughed softly. “I didn’t decide,” they said. “I just went.”

The system recoiled.

Zombies mirrored the sa shift.

One approached the group, then veered left suddenly, not diverted by sound or scent. Another followed for several steps, then stopped and stood still, as if the urge to continue had simply ended.

No motive presented itself.

No reason lingered.

The climb was steady. Hands found holds without comntary. No one spoke of why this path was better or worse. When a stone broke loose, it fell. When it didn’t, it didn’t.

The man felt unease creep in, then loosen. “I used to need reasons,” he said quietly. “To know I wasn’t wrong.”

The woman nodded. “Reasons used to protect us,” she said. “Or punish us.”

The system convulsed.

Reasons created accountability. Accountability enforced order. Without reasons, choice beca untethered.

It tried again.

You must choose carefully, it warned. Your decisions matter.

The thought surfaced.

Then softened.

Mattering to what?

A zombie reached the cliff edge below, paused, and stepped off. It fell awkwardly, striking rocks, coming to rest far below. No spectacle followed. No lesson was extracted.

It was not a warning.

It was not a mistake.

It was simply what happened.

Midday passed without weighing alternatives. Hunger appeared; food was eaten. Fatigue arrived; rest followed. Each action occurred without narrative.

The man stopped walking, gazing out over the sea. “If choices don’t need reasons,” he asked, “how do we know who we are?”

The woman joined him, eyes on the horizon. “We’re the ones choosing,” she said. “That’s enough.”

The system shuddered violently.

Identity had been built from decisions justified over ti. Without reasons, identity blurred into motion.

Even danger lost its argunt.

A small horde erged from below, climbing poorly. The group moved away—not because it was smart, not because it was safer, but because movent happened.

Zombies followed briefly, then lost interest, peeling away without frustration.

Night arrived without reflection. No one replayed choices. No one wondered what if. Sleep ca without self-assessnt.

Sowhere deep within the system, another chanism failed—

That choices required reasons—

That justification created correctness—

That identity depended on explanation.

But here, choice no longer asked why.

It occurred.

Clean.

Imdiate.

Unburdened.

And in its quiet freedom, life moved without fear of being wrong—

Because nothing was demanding that it be right.
