The world went quiet.
Not peaceful—attentive.
Kael woke to that silence, his body aching in places pain had never reached before. His hand was wrapped in torn cloth, stiff with dried blood. It hurt to breathe. It hurt to exist.
Good.
Pain ant he was still himself.
Lyra sat nearby, sharpening her blade with slow, deliberate strokes. She didn’t look up. “You slept for six hours.”
“That’s a record,” Kael muttered.
Eron stood at the edge of the amphitheater, staring out at the ruins below. “Sothing’s wrong.”
Kael pushed himself upright. “Define wrong.”
Eron swallowed. “The dead aren’t moving.”
They looked.
The streets below were filled with zombies—hundreds of them—standing perfectly still. No wandering. No twitching. Just waiting.
Lyra’s jaw tightened. “They’re not hunting.”
Kael felt it then. Not pressure. Not hunger.
Focus.
The Devourer wasn’t pushing anymore.
It was watching.
“They’ve changed tactics,” Kael said. “It’s not trying to break .”
Eron turned, fear sharp in his eyes. “It doesn’t have to.”
The first scream ca from behind them.
Not cultists.
Survivors.
A small group stumbled into view, chased not by zombies—but guided by them. The dead herded the living with silent efficiency, funneling them toward the amphitheater.
Lyra raised her gun. “They’re using people as leverage.”
The Devourer’s voice slid into Kael’s mind—smooth now, patient.
You refuse to surrender.
So I will remove what you refuse for.
Kael staggered as images flooded him—Lyra torn apart. Eron consud. Every choice punished, not directly—but indirectly.
“This is my fault,” Kael whispered.
Lyra grabbed his collar, eyes blazing. “No. This is war.”
The survivors reached the steps, panicked, bleeding. A woman collapsed at Kael’s feet. “Please,” she begged. “They won’t let us leave.”
The dead closed in behind them, forming a wall.
Eron scread, clutching his chest as his mark flared violently. “It’s pulling at —trying to make open it!”
Kael saw it then.
The Devourer didn’t need Keys to turn the lock anymore.
It needed consent.
And it was going to get it—from pain, fear, and sacrifice.
Lyra stepped forward.
Too calm.
Too certain.
Kael felt it imdiately. “Lyra—don’t.”
She looked back at him, soft for just a second. “You taught him refusal,” she said, nodding at Eron. “But soone has to teach it cost.”
She dropped her weapon.
The world held its breath.
The Devourer leaned in.
One life... to spare many.
Kael lunged, grabbing her arm. “I won’t let you—”
“You don’t get to decide alone,” she said gently. “Rember?”
Eron scread. “Stop! It’s not asking—it’s counting!”
Kael’s mind raced.
Rules broken. Rules bent.
Then a new one—unfinished, untested—clicked into place.
Kael turned to the survivors. “Run. Now.”
They hesitated.
Kael drove his blade into the stone, blood dripping down his arm as he t the Devourer’s presence head-on.
“You want consent?” he growled. “Take mine.”
The Devourer recoiled—confused.
Kael smiled through the pain. “But you don’t get obedience.”
The dead froze.
The survivors ran.
Lyra stared at Kael, breathless. “What did you just do?”
Kael swayed, barely standing. “I changed the question.”
Far beneath the world, the Devourer shifted again.
Not frustrated.
Not angry.
Interested.
