They did not stop running.

But they stopped fleeing.

Two blocks beyond the industrial maze, the terrain shifted.

The ash thinned.

Concrete foundations jutted from the earth like broken teeth. Half-collapsed overpasses leaned against each other, forming a crooked canopy of shadow and light.

Vertical choke points.

Layered elevation.

Dead angles.

Kael slowed.

Not from fatigue—

From decision.

Lyra matched his pace instantly. "You've found it."

He nodded once.

Behind them, the recalibrated wedges advanced through the maze exit.

Still precise.

Still relentless.

But no longer flawless.

The hum carried strain.

Small desynchronizations flickered across their formation like skipped heartbeats.

Eron scanned the overpass ruins. "Multiple corridors. Limited visibility. Hard turns."

Mara exhaled slowly. "Processing nightmare."

Exactly.

Kael signaled formation shift.

No more fragntation.

No more wide dispersal.

Now—

Controlled bait.

The survivors ford a single visible column and moved deliberately into the largest open span beneath the broken overpass.

Clear sightline.

Apparent vulnerability.

The zombies accelerated.

The leading wedge sharpened again, narrowing for penetration.

They preferred clarity.

Predictability.

Kael waited until they were committed.

Then—

He split the column at the last second.

Not wide.

Not chaotic.

Three sharp angles into three pre-selected corridors between concrete pillars.

The open span vanished.

Replaced by narrow lanes and blind intersections.

The wedge entered—

And shattered against geotry.

Front ranks collided with sudden right angles.

Rear ranks compressed too quickly.

A chain reaction of micro-adjustnts rippled backward.

The second wedge attempted flank—

But elevation change forced staggered ascent.

Their synchronization fractured across levels.

Lyra led her unit up a tilted slab to the second tier.

Eron's group dropped into a drainage trench below.

Kael remained central, drawing the densest pursuit.

The hum grew louder—

Then unstable.

Zombies misjudged footing on broken rebar.

One slipped.

Another overcorrected.

Shoulder impact.

Delay spike.

The system was no longer chasing in open ash.

It was navigating unpredictability.

And unpredictability demands improvisation.

Improvisation consus structure.

Kael darted left into a tight stairwell void.

The pursuing zombies slowed drastically to maintain spacing.

Single-file entry again.

But this ti—

There were turns.

Hard.

Frequent.

Each bend required recalculation of line-of-sight vectors.

Each vector required command redistribution.

Bandwidth thinned.

On the second level, Lyra's unit crossed a narrow concrete beam and vanished behind a collapsed billboard fra.

Below, Eron's group weaved through trench shadows.

Three planes.

Three elevations.

Three pursuit branches.

The original wedge fractured into five smaller pursuit threads.

Overextension multiplied.

The hum no longer unified—

It stuttered.

Then—

A mistake.

At a tight junction between two pillars, two zombies entered from perpendicular corridors simultaneously.

Neither yielded.

Collision.

Full-body.

One fell.

Not dead—

But displaced.

The pursuit behind them stalled.

A domino hesitation.

Kael stopped just long enough to see it.

Not triumph—

Confirmation.

They weren't overpowering the system.

They were saturating it.

He signaled regroup point Delta—an exposed rooftop three structures north.

Lyra acknowledged with a flash of her blade in sunlight.

Eron's whistle echoed faintly from below.

The survivors converged upward, climbing fractured stairwells and debris ramps.

Behind them, the recalibrated pursuit lagged through layered geotry.

Still coming.

But fractured.

Segnted.

Burning cohesion with every intersection.

When Kael reached the rooftop, he turned to watch.

The system adapted.

Always.

But here—

On chosen ground—

Adaptation cost too much.

Lyra stepped beside him, breathing steady but eyes sharp. "We didn't just escape."

Kael shook his head.

No.

They redirected.

Because the difference between prey and strategist—

Is not strength.

It's terrain.

And when you choose the ground—
