The desert stretched endlessly before Damien Rook and Lena as they trudged through the scorching heat. Days had passed since they escaped the Hollow Path, but the cursed lands never seed to release their grip entirely. Now, they found themselves in the Sunblood Desert, a place rumored to be haunted by ancient spirits.
Whispers among survivors claid the sands were stained with blood, but Damien had learned not to trust rumors. He trusted only what he could see and fight.
Yet sothing was off. The wind was too still, the silence too complete. Lena sensed it too, her hand instinctively reaching for her weapon.
"There's sothing out here," she muttered, her eyes scanning the dunes.
Damien's gaze remained locked on the horizon, where the jagged silhouette of a forgotten temple lood in the distance. "We keep moving," he said, though a gnawing unease crept up his spine.
As they approached the temple, the sand beneath their feet began to shift, like the ground itself was alive. Without warning, the sand exploded upwards, revealing a swarm of skeletal hands clawing at them from beneath. The Bone Revenants—creatures bound to the sands—had been awakened.
Damien pulled his revolver, firing into the mass of skeletal forms rising from the ground. The bullets shattered bone, but there were too many, and they were relentless, driven by an unnatural force. Lena slashed with her knife, taking down several, but for every revenant destroyed, two more rose in its place.
"They won't stop," Lena shouted over the chaos. "We need to get to the temple!"
Damien nodded, taking down another revenant as they dashed toward the ancient structure. The temple's cracked stone walls offered little refuge, but it was enough to keep the revenants at bay, for now. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of decay, and strange carvings covered the walls—stories of forgotten gods and cursed souls.
At the center of the room stood a blood altar, its surface dark and slick, as if freshly used. Damien's stomach tightened. This place had been a site of sacrifice, and sothing told him that the curse here was tied to the temple.
"We need to destroy the altar," Damien said, his voice tense. "It's keeping them alive."
Lena nodded, already gathering what little explosives they had left. As she worked, Damien kept his eyes on the entrance, waiting for the inevitable assault. The revenants wouldn't stop coming until the curse was broken.
The ground trembled, and a low, guttural roar echoed through the temple. Damien's eyes widened as a massive, skeletal figure rose from the sand outside—a Bone Warlord, its hollow eyes burning with hate.
"Lena, hurry!" Damien shouted, drawing his knife.
The revenants surged again, and Damien fought them off, slicing through bone and sand as Lena set the charges. With a final roar, the Bone Warlord lunged at the entrance, just as Lena finished.

"Now!" she scread.
The explosion rocked the temple, sending stone and bone flying. When the dust cleared, the altar lay in ruins, and the Bone Warlord was nothing but a pile of rubble.
Damien caught his breath, wiping the blood from his face. "One curse down," he muttered.
But as they stood in the shattered remains of the temple, Damien knew their fight was far from over.
