The False Walker remained at the trench edge for hours.

Unmoving.

Violet fractures flickering in unstable rhythm.

Then, at sunset, it dissolved.

Not shattered.

Not destroyed.

It simply disassembled into drifting shards of harmonic light that retreated toward the fragnt monolith.

A failed prototype.

The colony did not celebrate.

Mara didn’t sleep.

“They learned sothing,” she said quietly, eyes fixed on waveform projections. “They always do.”

Lyra stood watch along the reduced periter, twin swords crossed over her back, ash settling over her leather armor like pale snow.

Kael remained near the Walker.

Listening.

At dawn, the first scream ca from the southern quadrant.

Short.

Sharp.

Cut off.

Lyra moved before the echo faded.

Inside a half-reconstructed storage structure, two periter guards stood frozen.

Between them—

Kael.

Or sothing wearing his face.

Perfect posture.

Perfect scars.

Even the faint burn along his jawline.

Lyra’s breath hitched — but only for a second.

The duplicate turned slowly toward her.

Its eyes were wrong.

Not empty.

asured.

“You shouldn’t be here,” it said in Kael’s exact voice.

Behind her, real footsteps approached.

The true Kael entered the structure and stopped cold.

For a mont, silence fractured the air.

Two identical figures stood facing one another.

Mara’s voice crackled through comms, trembling. “It’s not just visual mimicry. I’m reading harmonic overlays matching neural cadence.”

“They copied us,” Lyra whispered.

The duplicate Kael tilted his head slightly.

“No,” it replied calmly. “We optimized you.”

Across the colony, more reports flooded in.

A Lyra near the water vault.

A Mara in the control tower.

Periter units hesitating — unable to distinguish command authority.

The fragnt monolith pulsed once beyond the trench.

Low.

Satisfied.

“They couldn’t replicate the Walker,” Kael muttered. “So they’re destabilizing command.”

The duplicate stepped forward.

Lyra drew one blade in a single smooth motion, the tal gleaming in sepia light.

The imitation mirrored her draw perfectly.

Synchronization.

Reflex accuracy.

But its stance — half a fraction too symtrical.

Too balanced.

No micro-adjustnts from lived combat.

Kael saw it.

“Lyra. Now.”

She pivoted unpredictably, breaking form mid-strike.

The duplicate responded—

But its correction lagged by a breath.

Steel flashed.

Her blade cut through its shoulder.

Instead of blood, violet harmonic light spilled outward.

The imitation destabilized, form flickering violently.

It lunged once toward Kael—

Then fractured into dispersing shards.

Across the colony, other duplicates began failing under similar pressure.

Improvisation broke them.

Emotional unpredictability scrambled their response timing.

Mara’s voice sharpened over comms. “They can simulate mory. But not instinct under stress.”

Outside, the fragnt monolith pulsed harder, trying to reinforce the projections.

More duplicates erged from ash haze beyond the trench.

Not advancing.

Observing.

Learning from each collapse.

The Walker stepped forward, fractures blazing white.

Its resonance field expanded across the colony periter.

Not defensive.

Revealing.

The harmonic overlay exposed every false signature instantly — violet distortions shimring around each imitation.

Lyra wiped ash from her blade. “Masks off.”

Kael stared toward the horizon where silhouettes shifted in smoky shadow.

“They’re escalating toward integration,” Mara warned quietly. “If they perfect this...”

He nodded.

“Then next ti,” he said, voice steady, “they won’t stand outside the trench.”

The last duplicate within the colony dissolved under pressure.

Silence returned again.

But trust had shifted.

Every shadow now carried doubt.

Across the sepia wasteland, the fragnt monolith glowed faintly.

Not defeated.

Adjusting.

And as the Walker’s light held the periter steady, one truth settled heavier than ash—

When the enemy learns your face...
