The door finished unlocking with a deep tallic groan.
The final rusted bar slid away and crashed onto the basent floor.
For a mont, nothing moved.
The darkness inside the room remained completely still.
Elena Voss stood frozen a few feet away from the doorway, her chest rising and falling as she listened.
One breath.
Then another.
Slow.
Heavy.
Alive.
Behind her, the guardian zombie roared again as it slamd the creature against the stairwell wall. The impact shook the entire basent.
Concrete cracked.
Dust rained down.
But the sound that ca from the open doorway swallowed all of it.
A third breath.
Louder.
Closer.
The air pouring out of the room was cold and foul, carrying a sll older than rot—sothing ancient and buried.
Elena took a step back.
“Creature...” she whispered.
The monster beside the stairs twisted free from the guardian’s grip and landed heavily on the floor. One of its shoulders hung at an unnatural angle, but its glowing yellow eyes were locked on the open doorway.
Its voice ca out rough.
“Too late.”
The darkness inside the room shifted.
At first Elena thought her eyes were playing tricks on her.
Then the shadows moved again.
Sothing inside the room was unfolding.
A massive shape slowly rose from the blackness, like a mountain lifting itself from sleep.
Two enormous eyes opened.
They glowed faintly red.
Not bright like the creature’s yellow gaze.
These were dull.
Ancient.
Hungry.
The guardian zombie stopped attacking.
It turned slowly toward the doorway.
Then it stepped aside.
As if it were bowing.
Elena’s stomach twisted.
“It’s not guarding the door...” she whispered.
The creature growled grimly.
“It guards... the sleeper.”
The giant shape inside the room stretched.
Bones cracked like thunder.
Its body unfolded until its head nearly brushed the basent ceiling.
It was far bigger than the guardian.
Its limbs were long and skeletal, its skin stretched tight across a body that looked half-human and half-sothing far older.
When it stepped forward, the entire basent floor trembled.
The red eyes turned toward Elena.
For a mont, the creature under the bed stepped protectively in front of her.
But even it looked small compared to the thing erging from the doorway.
The massive being leaned forward slightly.
Studying her.
The crooked eye symbol carved into the door suddenly pulsed again.
Black liquid dripped down the steel like fresh blood.
The creature’s deep voice rolled through the basent like distant thunder.
“...marked...”
Elena’s breath caught.
“You can talk too?” she whispered weakly.
The red eyes narrowed.
“...called...”
Its long arm lifted slowly.
A single finger pointed toward her chest.
“...mine.”
The creature beside Elena roared in fury and leapt toward the towering monster.
But the giant moved faster.
Its hand snapped forward and grabbed the creature midair.
The impact shook the basent walls.
Elena scread.
The giant lifted the struggling monster easily, studying it like a curious insect.
“...guardian...” the deep voice murmured.
Then it squeezed.
The creature howled in pain.
“Elena... run...” it gasped.
But Elena couldn’t move.
Her legs refused to obey.
Because behind the towering monster, inside the darkness of the opened room...
More red eyes were opening.
One.
Then another.
Then another.
Dozens of them.
Watching.
Waiting.
The first creature stepped fully out of the doorway, its enormous shadow swallowing the basent.
And far above the building...
The distant hunter in the city howled again.
But this ti the sound was different.
Not a call.
A warning.
Because sothing far worse than the hunter had just awakened.
