The crack in the street widened slowly.
Concrete groaned as the broken asphalt split farther apart, revealing a deep black trench cutting through the middle of the ruined road.
Dust poured into the darkness.
Elena Voss stared into the opening, her heart pounding harder with every second.
“How deep is that?” she whispered.
The guardian creature didn’t answer.
His glowing yellow eyes were fixed on the moving darkness below.
Another tremor rolled through the ground.
This ti stronger.
The trench widened another few inches.
From sowhere far beneath the city, a low grinding sound echoed upward.
Stone scraping against stone.
Sothing enormous was moving underground.
Elena stepped back.
“Tell that thing can’t reach the surface.”
The guardian’s expression darkened.
“Oh… it can.”
A deep rumble rolled upward through the trench.
Then sothing appeared in the darkness.
At first it looked like a rock.
A massive curved surface slowly rising from the black depths.
But then it moved.
The shape shifted slightly as it pushed higher through the cracked street.
Elena’s breath caught.
“That’s not a rock…”
The guardian shook his head slowly.
“No.”
The surface erging from the trench was covered in thick plates of black stone.
Each one layered over the next like the armor of so ancient creature.
The plates were enormous.
Each one larger than a car.
And they were still rising.
Another section of the street collapsed as the massive body pushed closer to the surface.
Concrete crumbled and fell into the trench.
A mont later—
The ground exploded upward.
Chunks of asphalt flew through the air as sothing enormous forced its way out of the earth.
Elena stumbled backward.
The guardian grabbed her arm and pulled her away from the collapsing street.
A gigantic shape rose from the shattered road.
Not quickly.
Not violently.
But with terrifying patience.
More black stone plates erged from the trench.
Then sothing else.
A massive curved structure pushed upward between the plates.
Elena’s eyes widened in horror.
“That’s… a shell.”
The guardian nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
The enormous creature continued climbing from the depths.
Its body resembled sothing between a reptile and a colossal tortoise.
Its armored shell stretched across half the street.
But it kept rising.
Higher.
Bigger.
The shell was only part of it.
Two enormous limbs finally pushed through the broken asphalt.
Each claw thicker than a tree trunk.
Each movent shaking the ground beneath the city.
Elena whispered in disbelief.
“How big is that thing?”
The guardian didn’t answer right away.
He watched as the creature’s massive head finally began erging from the trench.
Stone plates covered its skull like ancient armor.
Its eyes were still closed.
Sleeping.
But its breathing shook the ground.
Finally the guardian spoke.
“Bigger than the hunter.”
Elena’s stomach dropped.
“That’s impossible.”
The creature’s head lifted slowly above the broken street.
Its body continued rising, revealing a massive serpent-like neck connecting to the enormous armored shell.
Dust and rubble slid off its body as it climbed fully out of the earth.
The ground cracked beneath its weight.
For a mont, the gigantic creature remained perfectly still.
Then—
Its eyes opened.
Two deep amber lights burned to life in the darkness of its armored face.
The creature inhaled deeply.
The sound echoed across the ruined city like thunder rolling through a canyon.
Elena took another step back.
“It’s awake.”
The guardian nodded grimly.
“Yes.”
The massive creature slowly turned its head.
Its glowing amber eyes scanned the ruined skyline.
Then they stopped.
Locked onto Elena.
The ancient beast studied her silently.
As if recognizing sothing.
The guardian creature whispered under his breath.
“That’s not good…”
Elena’s voice trembled.
“Why is it looking at like that?”
The guardian didn’t look away from the towering monster.
“Because it can feel the door.”
The creature’s massive head lowered slightly toward them.
And for the second ti that day…
Sothing ancient had awakened.
And it was staring directly at the keeper of the door.
