The pulse did not fade. It lingered beneath the city like a second heartbeat—slower, deeper, and far more deliberate. Ayaan felt it before he heard it again, a pressure building behind his eyes, as if sothing unseen was trying to push its way into his thoughts. The creatures below remained still, their hollow gazes locked onto the rooftop, unblinking and patient. Zara’s grip on his arm tightened, her fear no longer hidden.

“We can’t stay here,” she whispered, her voice trembling despite her effort to stay calm.

This ti, Ayaan didn’t argue.

But neither of them moved.

Because sothing had changed.

The air felt heavier, thicker—as if the space between them and the creatures had begun to shrink without anything physically moving. Ayaan slowly lowered the dead cara, his mind replaying Zara’s warning. If you see it, it sees you. The thought settled uneasily in his chest, but another question followed it—what if it could still see them even now?

Then the pulse struck again.

Closer.

The rooftop vibrated sharply, a crack forming along the concrete near the stairwell entrance. Zara gasped and stepped back, her eyes fixed on the fracture as it spread unnaturally fast. It didn’t behave like normal damage; it moved with intention, splitting the surface in jagged lines that curved and twisted like veins beneath skin.

“Ayaan...” she said, her voice barely audible. “That’s not breaking.”

He nodded slowly. “It’s opening.”

Before she could respond, the door to the stairwell slamd shut on its own. The tallic echo rang across the rooftop, final and absolute. Zara rushed toward it, grabbing the handle and pulling hard—but it didn’t budge.

“It’s locked!”

Ayaan stepped closer, trying the handle himself. It was useless. The door wouldn’t move, as though sothing on the other side was holding it in place.

Then ca the sound again.

A breath.

This ti, it was clearer.

Longer.

Right behind them.

Zara turned sharply, her fear breaking into panic. “Sothing’s here!”

Ayaan followed her gaze—but again, there was nothing. No movent. No figure. Just empty space. Yet the presence was undeniable now, pressing in on them from all sides. The rotten sll returned, stronger than before, filling their lungs with sothing that felt almost alive.

And then Ayaan made a mistake.

Without thinking, he lifted the cara.

Even though it was dead.

Even though there was no power.

He raised it to his eye.

For a mont, there was only darkness.

Then—

Sothing appeared.

Not on a screen.

Not as a reflection.

But inside the lens itself.

An eye.

Massive.

Watching.

Not like the creatures below.

Not hollow.

Not empty.

This one was aware.

Ancient.

And it was looking directly at him.

Ayaan staggered back, dropping the cara as if it had burned him. Zara rushed toward him, asking what he saw, but he couldn’t answer—not imdiately. His mind struggled to process the scale of what had just looked at him.

“It’s not them,” he finally said, his voice shaking. “They’re not the ones watching.”

Zara’s expression shifted from fear to sothing worse—understanding. “Then what are they?”

Ayaan looked toward the edge of the rooftop, where the creatures still stood below, perfectly still, their heads tilted upward.

“They’re not hunters,” he said quietly.

“They’re signals.”

As if responding to his words, the creatures moved.

Not forward.

Not upward.

But apart.

They began to spread across the street, forming a pattern—slow, precise, deliberate. From above, it looked almost like a symbol being drawn onto the surface of the city itself.

And then the pulse hit again.

Violent.

Imdiate.

The crack on the rooftop split wider.

Zara stumbled back as the ground beneath them shifted—not collapsing, but breathing, just like the street below had. The surface rippled, rising and falling like sothing alive trying to break free.

“Ayaan, we need to move!”

But there was nowhere to go.

The door was sealed.

The edges were too far.

And beneath their feet—

Sothing was waking up.

The crack widened further, darkness spilling from within it—not empty darkness, but sothing deeper, sothing that seed to absorb the light around it. A low sound rose from inside, not quite a voice, not quite a growl—sothing in between.

And then—

A hand erged.

Not reaching.

Not grasping.

Just... appearing.

Still.

Waiting.

Ayaan’s breath caught in his throat as he stared at it.

Because he understood now.

The city wasn’t being attacked.

It was being opened.

And whatever was beneath it—

Was finally ready to co out.
